    About Life Below Zero:
    Life Below Zero follows six people as they battle for the most basic necessities in the state with the lowest population density in the United States. Living at the ends of the world's loneliest roads and subsisting off the rugged Alaskan bush, they battle whiteout snow storms, man-eating carnivores, questionable frozen terrain, and limited resources through a long and bitter winter. Some of them are lone wolves; others have their families beside them. All must overcome despairing odds to brave the wild and survive through to the spring. And when spring arrives in Alaska, rising temperatures bring mounting challenges as they work to prepare for yet another winter.

    Specifically, Huskies are notorious for being runaways and wanderers. It’s literally bred into them to travel long distances. It’s written in their DNA. An unhappy Husky is one who doesn’t have a job or enough exercise. These dogs are living the dream and the HUMAN doubters are only projecting their own point of view onto a species not like themselves. So very human of us to do...

      FUreplygirl This is nothing like slavery. Before a run, the dogs are raring to go. Once they're pulling that sled, they're quiet and enjoying themselves. Working dogs love what they do, and pet dogs love staying active. I feel sorry for show-bred dogs who can't do anything but look the way some people think they're supposed to.

      Starligt Anderson they probably don’t feel the same about service dogs because they get a break at the end of the day or get multiple breaks if they are guid dogs. Service dogs are taken well care of and their owners care about their well being. Dog sledding is way different though.

      @@starligtanderson5486 Sorry I didn't see this earlier. But actually, having worked in law enforcement, I DO feel the same way about service dogs. In fact, I know the same kind of lying, justifying, and twisting the truth until it's mangled beyond recognition also takes place in service dog "training' and use. Here is my testimonial on that:
      Before I worked at a police department, I thought K9 units were great. Then I thought it might be only my own department that was brutalizing the dogs. I found out, to my dismay, that the brutalization is standard. Did you know that police K9's are routinely hanged to unconsciousness? But that's not all. When I was doing my research, I came across a testimonial from a blind woman who was very distressed about the cruel mistreatment of her guide dog, by "trainers" at the guide dog "training" center. And I discovered yet more....
      Although I knew that our lead K9 "trainer"(at the PD where I worked) also "trained" (and hanged) search and rescue dogs, I was still saying to myself, "THIS has to be an anomaly. Not THAT many people can be abusive and keep it a secret." But when I left the police department and worked at a hotel, wouldn't you know it, search and rescue teams with dogs were coming from all over the country for events (three times during the years that I worked there) and I was at first struck by the fact that NONE of these people acknowledged their dogs' presence except to give orders. There were no kind words, there was no petting. It was, again, like the dogs were pieces of equipment. They were kept in crates when they were not being taken out to be trained, or to do their business. Very unlike how it is presented to us via the media.
      But what blew me off the cliff was when a group of about 15 of these handlers were sitting around in the lobby late one night, talking. One of them was regaling the others with the exploits of one of their peers, who conducted an experiment with his dog - beating the dog only when he wore a blue shirt. (I know that dogs are alleged to be color blind, or limited in color perception, but I'm just reporting what I heard). The end of this story was that the dog attacked and bit one of the supervisors, who happened to be wearing a blue shirt. There was hearty laughter all around the group.

    For the idiotic people here. The dogs are born and WANT to run......thats why they act crazy when they get hooked up to the sled. Also the dogs have thick and warm coats and are bred that way so they don't need to come inside. The dogs are treated well and are fed and treated with great care so they can keep running.

      The dogs are kept on short chains most of the time, when not in use or in training, so OF COURSE they are eager to run.
      I know it is a foreign concept to animal exploiters to stop the self-serving actions with the dogs, and all the defensive chatter, and just give the dogs options, and see what THEY would like. That doesn't mean sabotaging the 'experiment' by cranking your heater up to 80 degrees. It means really thinking about THEM for a change.

    As Young Ones ourselves growing up in the North , we we taught to Run & Train our young Siberian Huskies by the time they were 5 months old .. never before that age .. EVEN THOUGH , THEY WANTED TOO !! But it is in their D.N.A. TO RUN !!! There was times , that , some of the other older Huskies would chew them off their traces & take THE PUPS Running !! As the Powers that be , Oh !! this is the Truth !! We would have to jump into a 4/4 & track them down , they were running !!! with the Pups !! Once they heard Us , they would head off into the Bush & Run along side of us !!! Once the Pups became Fatigued , the others stopped & just sat down , licked the Pups .. Brought them down , to us , sat beside the River .. Pawed the Young , not to drink to fast .. The Run WAS OVER Ah , the Nature of these Wonderful CREATURES !! Pure LOVE !! So many Valuable Lessons can be learned from them ~~~

    Great video. that proves how man's inadequacies are dependent on the endurance of these dogs ( and their willingness to cooperate).
    It's been proven the dogs can reprogram" their bodies' responses to stress, something humans can't do.

    i wish i could sled but i live in Texas and Tennessee. When i'm in one state it snows like a blizzard, when i go to the said state, there is no snow at all... i hope i can sled one day, get my own big plot of land where there are horses and just breed dogs and train them.

    Its so nice to see people who treat their dogs right, there are so many bad examples. Please dont EVER go on a dog sled tourist tour. those animals do not necessarily have a good life.

    Its God's Will - He created so many types of animals and dogs especially I believe have a purpose to help humans in various ways. In fact dogs are not really pets but have a working function either like these sled dogs or to guard farm animals etc. Most important is that they are given enough food and rest and love - and a useful function. Nothing wrong if we dont use them as "pets" . In fact its a waste not to use their useful traits as long as we treat them well.

    What breed of sled dogs is this? They seem to be bigger than Siberian huskies and some of them look more wolfish than Alaskan Malamute.

    • @somethingabstract3735
      @somethingabstract3735 3 роки тому +1

      Could be an Alaskan husky although their is no breed standard they are often bred based on what is needed from them

    I have such a strong urge to do dog sledding, but how can one get started without moving to Canada and buying and training eight dogs? I live in Illinois and have owned a Siberian who recently passed after 15 amazing years together, and man did that dog love running. They are the most amazing animals I've ever dealt with and want to work with them where they are truly in their element, any advice short of just uprooting and finding a community up north?

    • @ShadowTheDemonWolf77

      I've always wanted to dog sled. I spent almost 4 years trying to convince my parents to get me a Siberian husky. I ended up getting a yorkie because my dad hates big dogs. To this day I still want to mush more than anything. One day I will enter the Iditarod and I'll have the most unique team that anyone has ever seen. ;)
      I would go into more detail but I don't want someone taking my dream away.

      Feuerbach1 Once I saw a guy with a pit bull and german shepard pulling him on a skateboard down the street. Urban mushing could definitely work

    • @Sukijopa
      @Sukijopa 8 років тому

      Well, you can always try dog fighting. That is very urban. It's cruelty isn't as easily disguised and swept under the rug as the sledding industry, but I'm sure your dog will "enjoy" it just as much!

    • @Feuerbach1
      @Feuerbach1 8 років тому +9

      Is riding a horse the same as dog-fighting? What evidence do you have that dog-sledding is cruel to the dogs, or even that they don't enjoy it? I've owned several huskies and they are never happier than when they get to just gallop their asses off. I might concede a level of wear and tear after doing something like an iditarod, but I still wouldn't necessarily even call that anywhere near the level of cruelty that dog-fighting entails. Take your self-righteous bullshit elsewhere.
