I just saw Togo. And wow what a dog !. He deserves his own statue just like balto. He was also much older at the time
I just saw that Togo has a statue now too ❤ it's in Maine.
As an Alaskan resident, I feel like this video does a fair representation of the facts. Some people are going to comment about "making" these dogs run, or other claims of animal cruelty. While that happens, it is extremely rare, and mushers found guilty of an offense are pretty much ostracized from the sport.
These dogs LOVE to run. They are selected from litters at about 6 weeks old when mushers see the dog has what it takes. If a musher doesn't pace their dogs, they will run themselves to death.
Thank you for the quality video!
I can attest to this at least a bit; my brother's dog is a Husky/Golden Lab mix. She isn't stocky enough to be an actual sled dog, but she's very hard to walk on a leash because she just loves to pull as hard as she can; she is a sweet dog that will stay next to you for the most part, but to her anything resembling a harness means pull! She also loves the cold and the snow, and will gleefully dive into snow banks for hours on end. I actually got to visit her in Nome and she seems to love it there, though it very rarely reaches the -40 Balto had to deal with, Nome is usually in the 0-15 f range in the winter; it's the interior that gets really cold.
I've never met a sled dog, but I've met many working dogs. It's ALWAYS their choice - more than that, it's their passion. They live for it. When my dad took his two on week-long hikes, they had their own backpacks and carried their own supplies just like everyone else. ♡
.... why did this make me cry? I'm just so proud of those dogs and people i guess.
softie
“Thank you, Balto. I would’ve been lost without you.” The most moving phrase I had ever heard in a kids movie growing up.
give TOGO a credit that dog was traveled much longer distance than Balto
Such good boys!!!
Snoop Doggy Dog!
many wouldn't notice but TOGO and his pack deserve some acknowledgement for the longest travelled on this mercy run.
Like more than 200 miles
264 miles to be exact
Now that's a cool bit of Alaska history.
twelge15 presymably that pun was accidental.
There's a movie/animated movie based on this story called Balto. I fell in love with it when I was young.
The sequels aren't so good though.
Vanessa Šalamon also several books
Vanessa Šalamon everyone knows
yeah the sequels were trash
The sequels are good if you don't think about them too much.
Love that movie was an awesome movie
This makes me want to rewatch Balto
ikr?!!?
Balto best doggo
I watched Balto during a time of my life where I couldn't parse what was happening (somewhere in between not having a theory of mind and and not being able to understands people's motives or, well, words longer than seven letters). I'm definitely missing something, aren't I?
Fun fact: Muk and Luk (the doofy polar bears) are voiced by Phil Collins.
same
Balto & even Togo who had a tougher terrain to cross alongside all the other dogs & their riders are well remembered today. We are forever indebt of their service!
they were the epitome of a working dog! incredible dogs!
Just watched this during the COVID19 Quarantine - early May. It really hit home. I wish more people were staying home, more people trusted the science, and maybe we'd all be handling it better if we had more animal companions around. 🐕❤
Balto was my favorite movie. My parents hated it. When I was young, back when this thing called "blockbuster" existed, when you go to a brick-and-morter store and rented these things called VHS (okay no more of that joke it's annoying) Yeah when I was young I literally rented it every single time I was allowed to rent a movie.
Quinn Grey I owned the VHS, so when I got home I would watch it 2-4 times before I watched cats don't dance 2-4 times. It's great that I can relate to other people a little bit.
Parzival blockbuster went bankrupt in 2010.... Youre in luck because Alaska has the biggest cluster of Blockbuster locations that remain open.
Are VHS renting businesses that old and outdated that people have to explain how they worked? Wow. I'm 24 and recall renting movies about 10 years ago.
Then again, I'm Brazilian, we're always behind on these things.
Quinn Grey I never did go to the store we just bought every Disney take made
Why didnt they just buy you the movie? They might have saved so much money lol
Togo was a hero dog and he did it at age 12 an amazing dog that didn't get the credit he deserves.
I‘m gonna hug my siberian husky lady Siku for being so great!
I took up occupation of being a sled dog for some good cardio workouts one year...
Muscle Hank Oh Muscle Hank 😂
Hello
Ahaha WTF
Even though I was already familiar with the story, this retelling gave me chills. Humans (and dogs!) can do some really amazing things.
I don't know why everybody complains about Alaska being cold. I lived in Alaska for a few years and it was realy warm, sometimes hot. Actually, when I think about it, for some reason it's always hot everywhere I go.
Hank is on fiiiire.
Climate change?
thank you so much for telling this story!! Most videos talk abot what dog got the most credit, but here you put lots of juicey facts... lov ya!
I've seen Balto, so... I kinda knew this. Man, I love that movie. But this was still good to watch to learn about diphtheria and historical accuracy of the movie!
I know this from the highly underrated movie Balto! It's such a beautiful and very nostalgic movie for me, and I still cry when I watch it today.
I've gotta say, Balto is a serious contender for the All-Time Good Boy award.
As a resident of the Alaskan capitol, this video gives me new pride living here. Thank you for this episode!
Balto is literally my favourite childhood movie!
I read a ballo book saving kids from diphtheria in Grade 3, the location was in Nome, Alaska and we did some writing, working on it.
I waited the whole episode to hear the name Balto, when I did I punched the air, thank you for making me cry.
Balto was one of my favorite movies growing up.
A dog cannot make this jurney alone... But maybe.. A wolf can!
Teedjay Gendron
Goosebumps!
TheFreePantheist more like peoplebumps
Alex Paille 😂😂
Wow, you have a good memory
Wiraga Adi who says he didn't watch that movie a couple days ago?? 🤣
Thank you Balto, They would have been lost without you.
Grandma Rosy: Thank you, Balto. I would have been lost without you.
-Balto 1995
😭❤❤❤
TOGO at 12 years of age did the longest traveller through the treacherous Frozen Norton Sound almost 4x longer than what Balto had travelled.
Balto was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid
I hope those pups who passed away during their heroic acts are getting endless belly rubs and treats up on that Rainbow Bridge. 😢🐶
I came here after seeing the Togo trailer
I loved watching the animated movie Balto growing up. It's super neat to hear the story as an adult
Running in winter ... that is a feast of STRONG MIND
I love that he is talking about balto cause this is the history of it and i live the three films and upcoming 4th balto is my favorite heroine/historical figure cause he was so determine brave smart and loyal
I grew up with the movie of Bolto; one of my favorites.
I just watch Balto!!! (on Netflix now btw)
Thank you , Balto!
Michael, Hank, could you guys do a show about fusions? Disc fusions. I had back surgery to fuse the last 3 discs in my back. Curious about it all. I have Titanium plates and screws holding everything together.
Just thankful that the town doctor was a smart guy, setting up quarantine as soon as he figured it out
I loved balto movie as a child. My dad used to tell me about mushers and that story. i miss him.
Balto was one of my favourite movies as a kid, I knew as soon as I saw this video title it would be related. :D
I watched a very in depth documentary/recreation of this once and it still touches me, how these guys and their dogs went above and beyond, to save that town.
Thx, I"m Alaskan but never heard the entire story. Once a year while I was growing up the public broadcast channel in Alaska would cover the race but since it was the late 80's most of the time it was just a camera mounted on a tree pointed at a portion of the trail so about every day or two a sled would appear on the camera, get bigger than pass it. Took around 2 minutes for the 24 to 48 hour wait.
I could listen to Michael Aranda for hours. lol.
Just beautiful..
This SciShow vid is a riveting watch from start to finish, I could feel the danger of the outbreak and the mounting pressure for the dog sled team to deliver the antitoxin in time. And yes Balto! :D
Balto was stuffed.
You can still see him if you go to Cleveland.
Fredrik Wahlgren Togo was too, he lives at Iditarod headquarters in Wasilla. He also spent a summer at the local girl scout camp, that's where I got to see him as a kid.
It's true. I saw him two weeks ago at the natural history museum there.
Fredrik Wahlgren which is stupid he should be back here in an Alaskan museum.
Fredrik Wahlgren the real story is sad too
PokéCenter, yeah. Spending eternity in Cleveland is not a fate I'd wish upon my worst enemy.
Those dogs are heros!!!
I love scishow with history!
Who's here after watching Togo
Me lol
I'm going to... 😊
BALTO: Im the best sled dog
TOGO: Hold my serum
It literally move me... Thx for teaching me this
Beautiful story...
I watched balto when i was a kid and to this day i will burst into smiling tears at the mere mention of this (his)story
I remember learning about this in elementary school as a kid, but it's nice to hear some of the science behind the Diphtheria outbreak. It's also quite fitting that this was uploaded around the time of the Fur Rendezvous.
Alaskan Psyche this weekend is also the Iditarod start too. Probably more related to the release timing.
My pet dog doesn't have the right physique to be a sled dog. He's a little husky.
Master Therion nice one dad
Then wait for him to become a big husky.
Give him audio instructions and put the antidote on the sled
Haha oh man that so good
I thought he was a little Shih tzu.
At least that's what I thought of his personality.
I'm guessing by the end of the day, the comments section will be overrun with Balto comments; that is, unless the extra Hanks take over first.
I actually knew all this, I watched the movie Balto. Great movie.
Wow. Just wow.
I kiiiiinda wanna cry.
This is one of the most bad ass bits of history. So inspirational!
I swear I saw a movie about this when I was young (20+ish years ago). It was all about a dog sled team needing to get a package of medicine to a town. I haven't remembered that movie for a long time, lol.
I love Scishow. I litteraly can't wait for new videos.
One of my favorite Diptheria stories comes from Anne of Green Gables. Apparently, diptheria and another illness in infants were called "croup" and "false croup" One of the treatments for Diptheria croup was ipecac. Normally, you'd never give an emetic for croup, so this bit of the story doesn't make sense at first. When we eradicated Diptheria with vaccines, we forgot this knowledge.
Also the story of the velvet rabbit
Just went to the Ceremonial start yesterday! Last Great Race! Had a great time
nine beings were lost durring the outbreak. four of them were four legged heros who gave it their all trying to save the other five and countless more.
this is the best ive ever seen!!!!!
Read the title, instantly thought of Balto. Looked at comments and watched the video, and I was right! Great movie from my childhood.
Sir, you forgot to mention Balto's sidekick, the goose Boris, and Steele and everything! Come on now! You need to watch the 1995 animated documentary!
@@takonadareishvili1743 I figured referring to a 90s cartoon as an animated documentary would have laid on the sarcasm thick enough. Well aware of Togo.
NICE DOG HISTORY .... COOL VIDEO ......!!!
I love you Michael☺️💙
That's amazing and moving too
ha! I used to watch the animated movie about Balto.
it's a weird cartoon, but I used to love it when I was a kid
A moment of silence for these goodest of boys
Time to watch the film "balto" again I think.
Awesome!! I read about this years ago and it's such an amazing story :D
"Thank you, Balto. I would be lost with out you."
thats a incredible story
Great to include history if scientific outcomes. Thanks for this!
this was very interesting, great channel
AKA just watch the Balto movie and fall in love with the beautiful husky/wolf hybrid
I used to love the film Balto 😍 i had to record it on a blank video because i couldnt find the video in stores or blockbuster.
And now I have to go watch Balto again.
Psycho in my mind, lunatic, hysteria. Wake up in the morning and I got diptheria
...Hannibal?
I was at the museum, museum itself was a bit underwhelming but the dog ride was fun
So weird just yesterday we were cleaning and I found a balto vhs tape, now this. I have to watch Balto now.
Balto! What a good doggie! :D
this man doesn't blink
I remember watching that movie and then getting very sad when I learned Balto was dead and I couldnt see him! But I loved the movie, it was amazing even though they didnt include the other sled dog teams
Well, you can SEE him. Pretty sure he was stuffed and put into a museum in Cleveland (the city where Balto and his surviving team members spent their final years).
I know I know but I wanted to see Balto alive and was very sad to learn he was already dead...I might want to see him on display one day still
And now I have to rewatch Balto.
Thanks, scishow. :|
Balto is a f*cking legend
Such good doggos ❤
As soon as he started the story I was like “is this Balto’s story?” Lol yup :) ^^ brave puppies
i just finished a book that had a few chapter that talked about this. I think it was called "Legend of the Ghost Dog". it was a good book.
I live in Anchorage and proud to call myself an Alaskan.
I SAW THE TITLE AND MY VERY FIRST THOUGHT WAS BALTO
LIKE I LOVE THOSE MOVIES SO MUCH IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY ANYMORE
Owwwnnn they have a hero dog statue!!!! That made me a bit emmotional
It's kind of emotional to think how those dogs mushed. They must have somehow felt the urgency from their humans.
