0:20 Nocturne No.8 in D-Flat Major Op.27 No.2
6:24 Etude in E Minor Op.25 No.5
9:37 Etude in G-Flat Major Op.10 No.5 'Black Keys'
Lipatti played the Chopin E Minor Concerto at this symphonic concert, with Otto Ackerman conducting the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, and after the intermission these three solo works were programmed; the works were in fact on the printed programme, not played as an encore as some have believed, though it is certainly unusual to have solo works officially included in an orchestral concert. One can hear Lipatti preluding prior to his performance of the Chopin Nocturne.
The material for these performances comes from three sources:
- Dr Marc Gertsch's amateur recording of another collector's broadcast tape, which he recorded with a handheld microphone in 1951
- a privately-pressed white-label LP of the entire concert (with a section missing from the first movement and some radio interference throughout) that circulated in a very closed network and was never released. I obtained this from Lipatti pupil Charles Reiner in 1990, who had received it years earlier from a friend in California.
- a small reel tape of the two etudes (minus the first notes of the E Minor Etude) that was found in Gertsch's collection, ostensibly from the collector who claimed to have the entire concert in wonderful hi-fi sound but refused to copy the entire thing for Madeleine Lipatti and Walter Legge.
The final notes of the Nocturne were missing from Gertsch's tape - on the Turnabout Vox LP that featured these solos alongside the 1947 Amsterdam performance of the Bach-Busoni D Minor Concerto, these were filled in from the same passage from commercial disc - and in this current transfer, those notes were replaced with the actual Zurich performance from the other unpublished tape source on the white-label privately-pressed LP. This source was additionally used for the first notes of the E Minor Etude before switching to the hi-fi tape, which captures Lipatti's tone with exquisite fidelity.
Edwin Fischer was at this concert and noted how magnificent the entire performance was, and indeed Lipatti's playing in these solos is extraordinarily beautiful. The Nocturne is taken at a more spacious tempo than his official recording of the work, perhaps a combination of no time constraints on a commercial 78rpm disc plus the suffering he had gone through in the 3 years between his studio account and this concert, with gloriously arched phrasing and marvellous rubato. The two Etudes are played with sparkling tone, remarkably refined articulation, stunning rhythmic vitality, and exquisite clarity of voicing. The middle section of the E Minor Etude features a melodic line that is exquisitely shaped, as if sung by the most skilled singer in one breath, while the 'Black Keys' Etude demonstrates Lipatti's stunning virtuosity fused with refined musicality, eschewing empty showmanship while being technically of the highest standard.

I'm not a musician nor have I listened to all the classical music that have been written, but(!) I alwyas have the feeling that Lipatti's performances are just the way the composer intended them to be.
The Nocturne is simply out of this world. The magic of Lipatti shines through every note despite the indifferent recording. His flawless technique along with immaculate pedalling brings pristine clarity to the Etudes.
These are invaluable documents. Which of us has ever heard this Nocturne played like that. There are no words to describe it. I am just overwhelmed. Thank you.
Yes.. He's still the best. Even with the aged recording, and played through the speakers on my phone, it is truly utterly brilliant
It is weird that he is not more popular.
He has all to be an exceptional pianist. His playing was so emotional, his sounds so clean. Everything seems effortless.
Perhaps he didn't live long enough but for me he should be one the legendary pianist.
I know a lot of amateur of classical piano know Lipatti, but most people know Rubinstein, Richter, Cziffra, Horowitz,... and all those pianists are amazing, but I feel that sometimes Lipatti is left on the side which he doesn't deserve at all!
Other pianists are not interested in popularizing of Lipatti. If everyone knows him, who will go to their own concerts?
Most people are not interesting. But among real pianists he is a legend.

I have never found such expressiveness. It is the best interpretation.
Enregistrements connus depuis des décennies, mais dont on ne se lasse jamais. Au point que, lorsque j'entends un autre pianiste jouer cela, j'éprouve le besoin de me "nettoyer les oreilles" en réécoutant encore et toujours Lipatti.
Oui il y a une science incroyable de savoir grouper certaines notes entre elles et c'en est un peu magique que cette très discrète "relecture"

My hero! I played this Nocturne at my Master's Recital. It's unbelievably beautiful. Have you noticed the resemblance in Lipatti and Chopin's profiles? I also wonder, given Chopin's illness and weakness, what his fortes would sound like to us, today.
I salute you for the dedication to finding Lipatti's recordings and make them justice ❤ Playing the piano myself (as an amateur, but also trying to do my best) I have quite a bunch of Lipatti's recordings, but didn't know these superb ones.

By the way, I was in Geneva a little over a year ago and wanted to pay respects to him. I spent a while trying to locate his grave and was unsuccessful, but may have been directed to the wrong place. Have you visited his grave before? I would love to find it next time I make it to Geneva.

I have these on an LP containing the Bach D minor concerto with van Beinum in Amsterdam.I always mistakenly thought that they were encores given after the concerto.In any case,I always felt that these 3 represented Lipatti at his best,and for me this means-humanity's best,one of those occurrences that makes you think of the claim that we were created in the image.
It was natural to think they were encores since one rarely sees solo works programmed with a concerto - but that was the case here, as the printed programme for this concert reveals. Remarkable playing indeed!

I think who ever put Dinu Lipatti D.O.B has got it wrong because I was told by a lot of people that he was Born on Monday March 19th 1917 and he Died on Saturday December 2nd 1950 at just 33 and I've got Some of his Records Reissued in 1955 on(EMI) Columbia as I won't touch his Originals because they were issued by Columbia(EMI) and they were not issued in Albums and I found that the 1950's Columbia Reissues are far better than the later one's from the 1970's and it was such a shame that he died so young[33]on Saturday December 2nd 1950 and thank God for the Gramophone as his Records are still selling Some 72 years after he Died;and I know that Great gains have been made into the treatment of Cancer and that Poor Man must have been Suffering towards the end of his life and I hope and Pray that no one will go through what he has been through
Romania was using a different calendar at the time - they only adopted the one we all use now in 1919 - so March 19 at that time would actually be April 1st. So March 19 was his printed birthday but on today's calendar it would actually be April 1
I Didn't know that but he was a Brilliant Concert Pianist and it was such a shame that he died at such a Young age of 33 and thank God for the Gramophone as I wasn't Born till the 22nd of December 1956 and My Great Niece Emily was Born on My 56th Birthday in 2012

Hello Fritz....In my humble opinion, as well as intonation it is a matter of balance.Here he is able to (as is often the case with Chopin)to balance the melody in the upper register with the lower with neither one dominating.Among others who can achieve this is Rubinstein and especially Sviatislov Richter.If you care to listen to his playing of the...Nocturne in E minor opus 72 no 1 perhaps you would agree.v

Indeed he does and did, as can famously be heard in his last recital. A new release and remastering of the Last Recital on the Solstice label in France has just been release, and it includes the preludes before the Schubert and Chopin that were somehow never released on EMI's original issue (and all subsequent reissues). Glorious!
