    We drove our 2022 Tesla Long-Distance Model 3 from Albuquerque, NM to Arlington, TX this month. It was our first long distance trip in the car. We had numerous phantom braking incidents and they were pretty scary. It didn't matter if we were driving with advanced cruise control or auto pilot. I reported it to our Tesla Service Center and got a reply from the Tesla Remote Diagnostics Team saying there were no "hardware faults" detected in our car. I reported it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration because I think my car is dangerous and I think Tesla needs to address this issue.

    • @GoLongAmerica
      @GoLongAmerica Рік тому

      It's not dangerous, you just need to always be paying attention to the road, even when you have the car on auto-pilot. If you get into an accident while using auto-pilot, the accident is YOUR fault, it's not the fault of the car.
      I have a 2018 Model 3 and have had a few situations of phantom breaking...when this happens, I immediately put my foot on the acceleration pedal to bring the car back up to normal speed.

    • @sunchiadventures
      @sunchiadventures  Рік тому +9

      We do the same but having your car randomly slam on the brakes can potentially be dangerous if someone is tailgating you and not paying attention. Overall, I would much rather have a car that does not randomly phantom brake while in cruise control when there are no visable objects in front of the vehicle.

      @@GoLongAmericaphantom braking is very dangerous. What happens if you’re being responsible and eyes are on the road, but your brakes slam going from 80 to 60 when someone is tailgating? Happens to me several times a day on the highway in the exact same spots here in Florida. It’s a major issue, even if you’re driving responsibly. My Toyotas do NOT do this on cruise control and you would think the safest car on the road could fix this.

      @@GoLongAmerica BS it isn't dangerous. I've been passing a truck on the Sydney to Melbourne freeway with someone right up my arse wanting to pass me. AP slammed on the regen/brakes when it saw a CROSS ROAD. My right foot was hovering over the accelerator pedal just in case... and it was quickly used. If not I would have been hit, BAD. Re the cross road, it was just like the case years ago when someone ran under a white semi trailer, except in this case, the camera could only see 'half' of the cross road. Scary shit mate.

    I've been driving a Tesla since 2015. My 2015 Model S had the Mobileye camera system and I never had an issue with phantom braking. I only started experiencing phantom braking when driving later models (2018 M3, 2022 MY) using their in-house solution after Mobileye ended their partnership. There's no rhyme or reason when it happens. Just like in your video, it happens on clear sunny days with no vehicles or other obstructions around.

      Exactly right. Rented a 2023 M3 from Hertz last week. On a trip down I-70 Kansas to Colorado, first time driving a Tesla, 20+ brake slams in one day! Rough roads, smooth roads, nothing in sight. No tumbleweeds, shadows from overpasses, nothing. I had read about phantom braking before, just didn't know it was so common or what to do when it happens. Hertz, in my view is negligent to not even mention it to its customers. I will continue to just rent and not own until this issue is resolved. And for those that claim it never happens to them, they better carry fresh panties in the glove box just in case!

The button is overhead near the mirror (for those that have never used it). In fact, here's an idea for Tesla... When a PB (or sudden deceleration occurs), SWITCH THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON AUTOMATICALLY. We have had our MYLR for just short of 3 months. Have driven it on a couple long trips back and forth from Santa Fe NM to Las Cruces NM. Most of that time is on I-25. The Phantom Braking has been UNACCEPTABLE! Driving it home to Las Cruces from our delivery at the Nambe Falls service center we got hard checked 5 times with no visible reason. From my research I was familiar with the issue but still was shocked at how hard and frequent it was. Just did another round trip from Las Cruces to Colorado Springs and had several hard checks both ways including some scenic routing via Alamosa. So far the only commonality is that the most of these hard checks happened with the sun higher in the sky. This is when mirages are most prevalent. One other scenario that might be related is when in rolling hills where you crest one and then there is another crest that isn't too far in the distance and a mirage in the valley. At least this is something we noticed a couple of times where we crested and got hard checked.
    One other observation after a lot of configuration changes. IMO, the phantom braking is a function of the Traffic Aware Cruse Control (TACC) and not (at least primarily) the auto pilot. We have had hard checks with everything else turned off and only on TACC. That means I turned off emergency braking, Auto Steer Beta, and FSD vision.
    Sometimes it makes me wish I still had my Chevy Bolt EUV Premier. While the Super Cruise availability wasn't as expansive, it didn't cause unsafe, unpredictable braking. It also auto initiated super cruise after a lane change unlike the the Tesla that requires you to engage it. And...the nanny feature of the Tesla is more than annoying. The Bolt used a camera on the steering column and as long as you didn't look away for too long or cover your face with your cell phone it never nagged you. Who else is developing the "Tesla Twitch" (my phrase) after driving a long distance. LOL

      @@sunchiadventures I have had what I call 'micro phantom braking' as well as the normal PB. MPB has happened on a 2 lane road with shade from a tree, then sun, another tree, sun etc etc. 5 'micro' PB's in a row that I counted. The sun was high in the sky, but behind me slightly. AP was ON, but not auto steer. The MPB's were so slight someone might not have even noticed them, but I was concentrating really hard, waiting for the next full PB that I could 'feel' these minor braking events happening through my seatbelt. Most people would not even know it was happening, but I bet other people have felt it as well as me... I can't be the only one... I'm installing a roof mounted dash cam so I can record the speed differentials on the screen. Comments on MPB's anyone ?

    Tesla could have fixed this a long time ago; all that's needed is to add a lidar sensor. But because Elon Musk is principled jerk, he refuses to do this. Tesla relies solely on cameras, and this problem always occurs on absolutely all Teslas in hot weather. The issue is that their cameras cannot distinguish a mirage from a real object.

    Currently It's still Driver assistance tech, not drive for you tech.. it will get better with time.
    Phantom brake may be an annoyance but is not a real issue because the correct way to use any system is to be ready to take over at any time.
    User in this video should be driving with foot touching accelerator just as they would as if not using system and cruising with no obstructions on road, if unnecessary braking occurs accelerator should be pressed not allowing significant slow down. Problem is ppl using these assistance systems inappropriately by not taking over when it doesn't perform flawlessly and complaining - which only builds negativity around such systems that ultimately are great at helping us on long trips. Companies will not continue to invest time and money into perfecting the tech if low IQ users build mass hysteria over being annoyed by having to still drive while these systems are assisting
