Actually I'm almost positive Anna K was 15 during this match. She was very close to 16 though. Her backhand was sensational for a 15/16year old. Too bad the rest of game didn't catch up and her body just didn't hold up.

Yeah, 11 of the 16 double titles Anna won in her career (she did't win any in single), she won them with Martina, with who she even played 15 finals (4 lost then, which makes a very good ratio of victories).
But all this started 2 years after this match.

They were friends and doubles partners. There was a little friction in their early days on tour (and one ridiculous bust up after an exhibition match as adults which they put behind them) but they grew to like and respect each other. And to be fair to Anna, her back was a mess before she was 21 and eventually caused her retirement in 2003. These two are evidence of why the rules on how many tournaments young players can play per year were changed. Both were full time on the main tour at 14 and both had retired (initially for 3 years in Martina's case) before they turned 23.

When I was very little, my first memories of female tennis was that Navratilova was this tennis machine, this unstoppable force of nature, and Steffi Graf was this plucky underdog who so nearly was the equal of Navratilova but not quite. Then one day Navratilova was no more, and Steffi was the female tennis T-1000 and there was no one for a while who got near her. But then, one day, this hot young thing named Martina Hingis started to get real close, but not quite. But one day, she beat Steffi, and soon enough Steffi was no more, and then Hingis was the Tennis Borg queen who couldn't be stopped. That would have been right around the time this match happened, I remember how Hingis used to dress around the time she truly emerged as a leading force.
For some reason at this period, around when you had the likes of Hingis, Sabatini, Kournikova and others, women's tennis was of great interest to me. Can't think why....

Add that to her Mother making it so bad the coach left and her Mom took over her training, it wasn't ideal. Between the two things, it's hard to say how good Anna might have become, because she showed she could, beating Stephie Graff and other top players of the time.

Yes, the convention back then was that players would pay a curtesy (bow for men, curtsy for women) to the Royal Box if it was occupied by a member of the Royal family. They did away with that convention in 2003. The exception is if The Queen or The Prince of Wales is in attendance.

They didn't ruin tennis, they CHANGED the game, as the new era of players had arrived. Don't get me wrong, these players were great back in the days, we're very fortunate to witness how tennis evolved after a few decades not only for women's game but for men as well. Now that the big 3 and the Williams are close to retirement, it's still clueless what will be the fate of the ATP and the WTA.
