Probably my favorite piece of recorded music ever. There’s just so much here. I keep coming back year after year. One of my great regrets in life will be having been too young to have seen pharaoh live
I was able to see Pharaoh in Prospect Park Brooklyn a few years back with Nichols Payton on trumpet, and it was a great experience. A local hip-hop artist also graced the stage and Pharaoh danced real hip-hop moves to the crowd's delight. Pharaoh was the MAN!!
Pharaoh Saunders a Man Way ahead of his Time. He Lived and Served his purpose. A Gift to Humanity Indeed. A True Believer. One of The, or only Greatest Improvisational Composers to Ever Grace This One Dimension. Real Talk. RIP!! Much Love and Respect.❤❤❤❤❤
This is a fantastic duet performance by two undisputed masters, their rapport is breathtaking, thanks for posting. Anyone liking what he hears here should get his hands on Africa, a Pharoah Sanders LP/CD recorded just a year later in 1987 with his working band at the time consisting of the great John Hicks on piano (which explains their rapport here) with the addition of two more jazz masters i.e. Curtis Lundy on bass and Idris Muhammad on drums. A desert island jazz recording.
I first heard a record of Pharaoh Sanders at a friend's house in London. It was 1974 and I was totally blown away after hearing Healing song, he has been my favourite Jazz musician ever since.❤❤❤
Yeah, just got to that and came back to your comment. Wow! He is playing so intensely, fluidly, creatively, in sync with the melody and rhythm, amidst his blistering 'attack' (outro/intro-spection and improvisation). Jazz fans gotta love some John Hicks, as well as Pharoah! Glad I have John's wonderful first LP, "After the Morning", with Walter Booker, Jr. on bass, recorded at Cubbage Musical Productions, on Jan. 5-6, 1979, on West 54 (a NYC) record label (copyright Peters International, Inc 1979). Find and listen to that, too!
Divine sax player, composer, musician, artist, and disciple - Creator Master Plan always lovely, wish he coulda played Got to have Freedom at his concert...was lucky to have seen him at Jazz Standard back in 2016 - RIP brother 🙏
Right there with John Coltrane & many other fantastic Artists & Inovators...RIP... jam on with: Trane, Miles, Charlie & all the other great Jazz Cats over in HEAVEN! ❤❤❤😂🎉

53:50 John Kay of Steppenwolf gets upset with the camera man
Was it he?
@@invisiblecurious856 Heeheee, no, I'm just kidding. But it sure looks like him ;-)
coltrane got more modal and simpler? Sanders has become more traditional?
I think he just grew wider, expanded. He could do pretty much anything in his later years, inside, outside, whatever...
What is the name of this song? So beautiful
setlist in the description ;-)
