I think it's worth also pointing out his ribs were broken from his brothers beatings which is one of the reasons why he couldn't just shout to the kids the truck was gonna hit. In the anime there’s a slight bit of discomfort but he only says he hadn’t spoken much in years so you wouldn’t know that his ribs were broken without reading the novels, its not that important but little details like that help with character building. For me he’s not the greatest person but I don’t think he deserved to be beat up so badly by his family so i do pity the person he use to be even more knowing his ribs got broken.

@@glitchyfox8706 I don't think it did, Most of the other world took place in the first chapter which pretty much built his entire character in his old world right up to his death, it was really detailed too which was a big hit with me as one of the things I dislike about Isekai's these days is they barely give you any info on the character before they're thrown into the new world so basically who they were in the real world becomes irrelevant unless the plot demands it. Another thing I dislike is how they get to the other world. I love Slime and it's one of my favorite Isekai's but it really bugs me that he was stabbed by a random person just running around the streets with a knife with Zero context. All that aside though the only time his other self is brought up is when he goes over past experiences and how they relate to his current life, as well as ((((SPOILER!!!))) a certain character forcing him to assume his old form in his dreams
What the classmates did to Rudy in his past life was not bullying, it was multiple serious felonies. Assault, abduction, torture, sexual assault, and the creation and possession of child pron from the pictures. I do not know how the Japanese would handle a situation like that, but in the US every single one of the classmates who even with minimal involvement by duplicating the picture by resending and failed to turn it in to the police would be facing max jail time for a minor. And if any of the bullies who actively participated were over 18, they would be looking at jail time that could add up to a near life sentence. Not to mention the civil suit from Rudy's past parents against the school and the parents of the bullies would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Having Rudy being someone who wasted his previous life as an actually flawed individual was what saved the show to me from being any other isekai. I mean, the entire premise seems to be to live your second life as someone you can be proud of, sending a message to the audience that if someone like him could strive to do better then they should as well. Most modern isekai are afraid to make a flawed character the main protagonist because it takes a lot to willingly acknowledge seeing even a part of yourself in that sort of person without any kind of sugarcoating to self-insert. To accept that society isn’t the problem, but you are instead. And it takes even more effort to be willing to change so that you can be proud of yourself, no matter how hard it is. Re-Zero's Subaru is probably the closest protagonist I've seen to be similar and the series carry a similar message.

Rudeus is a very horrible person at first but when he got a second chance, He tried to do his best to change and never let his love ones dissapointed again.

I do enjoy that he was self aware and actually tried to do things rather than sitting around doing nothing at all. Not often we get shut-in MCs like this early into a story, normally they realize this sort of thing midway or near the end of the story.
Well he restarted his life as a baby legit doing nothing and you could see his hesitation about going outside early on and thanks to people that cared for him as well as him not wanting a repeat of his past life he was slowly able to bring himself out of his shell. He’s genuinely a gross person but not someone you can’t identify with especially in our community. It’s cool to see Rudy slowly evolve into a better person even though his reasons for improving are less than saintly XD
A lot of the later adaptations of the webnovel have large portions of the "Rudeus was a shit person" taken out. The author was HEAVILY criticized over the beginning of the WN and took steps to correct it even in the LN. Especially in the Manga and as we see here in the Anime adaptation they wait until episode 2 to introduce us to the less savory parts of his personality; and even then it's censored quite a bit but still manages to get the message across. Overall it was changed for the better as it's not really who he was that matters - it's how he died and how he decided to be a better person in his new life.

Lots of people have told me "it's just a cartoon" when I point this out. The character was made to be despised at first. And while he starts with a tragic background, which kind of excuses his milder transgressions, you are reminded that. 1- he is very conscious when he's doing wrong, but he really doesn't care 2- he is clearly capable of much worse, as his impulses get the worst out of him as oportunities arise. As more and more things happen to him in life, he starts caring about the people and he stops looking at them as "fantasy characters". He gets better over the years but it costs him sweat and blood and sometimes someone else's sweat and blood.

i remember reading it as one of the after stories. Things got sour, something about forbidden relationship, son run away, and rudeus understanding why he never made a move on his step sister.
I think it was changed even in the novel. I remember at one point it said he was looking at pictures of his brother's daughter, but when I reread the novel it said lolis. Sometimes authors change stuff because they feel they went too far and I think this was one of those situations.

The fact that this show got a second season and is doing well is uncomforting, his previous life's atrocities committed is so well hidden that yes you have to give props to the author for giving him the lowest of the low backstory for fiction but man is it still so disgusting
While he has done some pretty awful things, there are reasons as for why/how he turned out this way. Rudius as a character is flawed and doesnt feel copy pasted. He feels REAL and the author doesn't sugarcoat that just to pander to people who try to police his creativity. Fact of the matter is, people haven't forgotten and neither is the author hiding the fact that Rudy is a bad person trying to turn over a new leaf. People don't change so easily and that's exactly what we're shown. Just look at Chainsaw Man's popularity for example. A lot of people including myself want to see these types of unapologetic and blatantly perverse/depraved/disgusting/raw anime. I don't find it uncomforting that this show is doing as well as it is. There are much more vile and degenerate pieces of media/literature out there that people should try to police. Also, it's not like the entire show is about Rudius being degenerate and perverse. He hasn't done anything completely unforgivable and he's genuinely trying to be a better person as the story goes on.
As for me, its a breath of fresh air rather than hsving a wish fufillment protagonist doing a checklists of good deeds with ease. I want something more grounded and complex. Mushoku Tensei gives me that story. The characters themselves are full of rich backstories.

Spoiler alert for later in the series but theres a scene later on where rudis sister is on the verge of becoming a shut in because of him and when he tries to console her hes reminded of his older brother. When rudi was being bullied in his previous life and became as hut in his brother was trying to be there constantly spending hours outside his door just sitting there to get him to come out and rudi always pushed him away. His family was always trying to be there for him and he completely pushed them away.

As far as I can remember, he can't use touki. Touki, which is necessary to advance into the different sword style that's why he stays on being a magician.

He ONLY touched Eris, and Eris was just as perverted towards him, which was left out in the anime. Even that he toned down a LOT at the end when Eris left. Everything with Sara was consensual. He touched the beast girls, because he was allowed to. Not only this, he never tried to force anything with anyone if they objected. When he tried to push too far with Eris, he was promply brought down to Earth and he apologised. He never repeated the mistake again. Now for his other qualities, he is brave, respectful (except the perviness), kind, humble, unjudgemental, impartial, helpful, sacrificing, empathetic, understanding, studious, intelligent, curious, and always helping the weak as taught by his father and always willing to acknowledge his mistakes and grow and take advice from anyone no matter who they are. Yeah, he's the complete opposite of Arthur from The Beginning After the End. Arthur actually does his best for everyone around him before himself so he can protect everyone. Plus, he isn't a pervert. He's charismatic. He even rejected one of the character's confessions because he felt that he's old mentally even though he reincarnated in a new life.

I've read the Light Novel/Web Novel up to volume 18 and I LOVE Rudius. I don't understand everyone who hates the show/Rudius because he's a bad person. How many times have we gotten a protagonist who is just a virtuous person who may have flaws, but nothing so bad they'd be hated over it. Rudius has so many MAJOR flaws as a person and it's refreshing. It's even better when he finally overcomes these flaws. Don't think of Mushoku Tensei in terms of it's plot, it's a character driven show about how Rudius grows as a person throughout his new shot at life.

In his current life Paul and Zenith are MUCH better parents than Rudy's old parents were. To not take any action after your son was physically and sexually assaulted other than a cheap "keep your chin up! Don't let them get to you!" shows callousness and weakness in my eyes. I was strong enough to fight off my bullies but my dad was still there for me and told the school officials to keep them off me or he would give me permission to fight freely. Paul stayed involved in his son's life and didn't let him flounder when he was hurting, he learned from his mistakes as a parent and did his best to make Rudy a better man than he ever was. I think that a major thing that should've been mentioned in the video is that he did have redemption in his previous life as well - by literally sacrificing himself and his miserable life for others. The weight of this deed just goes over most people's heads and I can't really understand why people focus in on character flaws, while there's tons of positives and good that the character has going for them as well. While it's hard to quantify the good a person might do compared to the bad, the MC's first life was neutral in terms of morality, while I guess there was no question that he was toxic from an outside view (hurting the people around him). But the context we get for his life, and the non-existent support he got from his family, it's not hard to understand. If you've been stuck in your room for 10+ years, are afraid to even go outside, and you are expected to go to a gathering of many tens of people, outside, I am sorry but that's horrible. Now jacking off during that time did make him look bad, but he shut out the bad information, while he is an adult he drew the shortest of straws you can, and there was absolutely no one who understood him. In terms of character flaws in the other life - he has a lot, sure, many carried over from his other life, but there was no moment where he was trying to literally harm a person, might he have had motives that we deem immoral? Yeah.. But every time he got his just desserts, and the other character (Eris) proved that she's independent, strong and is able to make her own choices in punching Rudeus's face in when he tries to cross that immoral line. Rudeus never forced himself on characters who were weak or abused his power (the few moments when he made use of certain situations immorally, he always had reflections afterwards, like literally every-single-time.). He always tried to protect those close to him, he tried to do good and he did do a lot of good for the people around him. His libido, while a big issue, doesn't remove all the crazy good that he did through his travels in the new world.. He would be a solid friend and he doesn't prey on random women, that already makes him far better than most of the people in that world.
Finally a proper comment people act as if kids at that age don't have improper thoughts ever they don't take into consideration kids can actually have lewd thoughts without even knowing they are lewd or even hitting puberty. i won't describe what they were as am taking myself as the example but it started as early as a first grader . now imagine having overly imaginative brain as well 34 years of degenerate lifestyle like am sorry but he is bound to fuck up when even puberty hits. people often tend to forget that it isn't 34+11=35 but more like ((16/a+18/b)+(11/a))=??. What I like about Rudy is that in his new life he tries to change his life he tries to change himself and be a better person he can be slowly but surely and because of the people around him his new family, his teacher, and his first friend. and the other people that he would meet in the near future and as he grow would accept his mistakes and change the bad ways he did back in his past life.

Lots of small details in the web novel is a motive to improving himself. He def feels bad about not showing up, he even mentions it in his thoughts, and we all know he feels like a scum for not bothering to show up to his parents funeral even after the mother supported him when he became a shut in. Sure he doesn't completely begs for forgiveness but it is an important factor on why he cares so much about his family without him mentioning it. He def loves his parents, cares about them and doesn't want to loose them, even goes through a depression that almost killed him when he lost paul. Also keep in mind, he isn't in that world anymore, he has new parents that care, love, and support him more than his past parents ever did.
Yoo so I caught up on the manga. All the way to chapter 69 so is there another website where it continues. I started reading manga two years ago so I’m not used to this but it seems to me that there’s more I found out that there are more to this.
I admit, the art style is godlike but with that much effort that will be put into an anime, I doubt that it will even get an anime adaption. The story kinda sucks tho.
Everyone kept bringing up what a terrible person Rudeus was in his past life, going so far as to call his current self a 'pedophile' for making the moves on girls his age, nevermind that he was reborn rather than being a middle-aged man roleplaying a young boy, thus making his past life largely irrelevant.
There's also a single part about rudeus that appears in the aisha redundency that was removed in the LN and the english version WN introduction which really puts Rudeus in a really dark light.

In the anime there’s a slight bit of discomfort but he only says he hadn’t spoken much in years so you wouldn’t know that his ribs were broken without reading the novels, its not that important but little details like that help with character building. For me he’s not the greatest person but I don’t think he deserved to be beat up so badly by his family so i do pity the person he use to be even more knowing his ribs got broken.

@@glitchyfox8706 I don't think it did, Most of the other world took place in the first chapter which pretty much built his entire character in his old world right up to his death, it was really detailed too which was a big hit with me as one of the things I dislike about Isekai's these days is they barely give you any info on the character before they're thrown into the new world so basically who they were in the real world becomes irrelevant unless the plot demands it. Another thing I dislike is how they get to the other world. I love Slime and it's one of my favorite Isekai's but it really bugs me that he was stabbed by a random person just running around the streets with a knife with Zero context. All that aside though the only time his other self is brought up is when he goes over past experiences and how they relate to his current life, as well as ((((SPOILER!!!)))

What the classmates did to Rudy in his past life was not bullying, it was multiple serious felonies. Assault, abduction, torture, sexual assault, and the creation and possession of child pron from the pictures. I do not know how the Japanese would handle a situation like that, but in the US every single one of the classmates who even with minimal involvement by duplicating the picture by resending and failed to turn it in to the police would be facing max jail time for a minor. And if any of the bullies who actively participated were over 18, they would be looking at jail time that could add up to a near life sentence. Not to mention the civil suit from Rudy's past parents against the school and the parents of the bullies would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Having Rudy being someone who wasted his previous life as an actually flawed individual was what saved the show to me from being any other isekai. I mean, the entire premise seems to be to live your second life as someone you can be proud of, sending a message to the audience that if someone like him could strive to do better then they should as well. Most modern isekai are afraid to make a flawed character the main protagonist because it takes a lot to willingly acknowledge seeing even a part of yourself in that sort of person without any kind of sugarcoating to self-insert. To accept that society isn’t the problem, but you are instead. And it takes even more effort to be willing to change so that you can be proud of yourself, no matter how hard it is.
Re-Zero's Subaru is probably the closest protagonist I've seen to be similar and the series carry a similar message.
Its like the opposite of each other tho he subaru life a carefree life but then got transported and died multiple times and rudy got bullied and sexually assaulted in his past life.

It’s cool to see Rudy slowly evolve into a better person even though his reasons for improving are less than saintly XD

A lot of the later adaptations of the webnovel have large portions of the "Rudeus was a shit person" taken out. The author was HEAVILY criticized over the beginning of the WN and took steps to correct it even in the LN. Especially in the Manga and as we see here in the Anime adaptation they wait until episode 2 to introduce us to the less savory parts of his personality; and even then it's censored quite a bit but still manages to get the message across.
Overall it was changed for the better as it's not really who he was that matters - it's how he died and how he decided to be a better person in his new life.
Yeah the anime is doing a pretty damn good job adapting this story

Lots of people have told me "it's just a cartoon" when I point this out. The character was made to be despised at first. And while he starts with a tragic background, which kind of excuses his milder transgressions, you are reminded that.

2- he is clearly capable of much worse, as his impulses get the worst out of him as oportunities arise.
As more and more things happen to him in life, he starts caring about the people and he stops looking at them as "fantasy characters". He gets better over the years but it costs him sweat and blood and sometimes someone else's sweat and blood.

The fact that this show got a second season and is doing well is uncomforting, his previous life's atrocities committed is so well hidden that yes you have to give props to the author for giving him the lowest of the low backstory for fiction but man is it still so disgusting
While he has done some pretty awful things, there are reasons as for why/how he turned out this way. Rudius as a character is flawed and doesnt feel copy pasted. He feels REAL and the author doesn't sugarcoat that just to pander to people who try to police his creativity. Fact of the matter is, people haven't forgotten and neither is the author hiding the fact that Rudy is a bad person trying to turn over a new leaf. People don't change so easily and that's exactly what we're shown. Just look at Chainsaw Man's popularity for example. A lot of people including myself want to see these types of unapologetic and blatantly perverse/depraved/disgusting/raw anime. I don't find it uncomforting that this show is doing as well as it is. There are much more vile and degenerate pieces of media/literature out there that people should try to police. Also, it's not like the entire show is about Rudius being degenerate and perverse. He hasn't done anything completely unforgivable and he's genuinely trying to be a better person as the story goes on.
As for me, its a breath of fresh air rather than hsving a wish fufillment protagonist doing a checklists of good deeds with ease. I want something more grounded and complex. Mushoku Tensei gives me that story. The characters themselves are full of rich backstories.

Spoiler alert for later in the series but theres a scene later on where rudis sister is on the verge of becoming a shut in because of him and when he tries to console her hes reminded of his older brother. When rudi was being bullied in his previous life and became as hut in his brother was trying to be there constantly spending hours outside his door just sitting there to get him to come out and rudi always pushed him away. His family was always trying to be there for him and he completely pushed them away.
Actually they did it's just rudy refused their help or at least that's what happened in the novel don't know about the manga

Rudeus is a LOT more than just his perverted side, which isn't even a core of his personality. As for character development, did he molest or rape Lilia, Zenith, Aisha, Norn, Sylphie, Ghislaine, Roxy, Elinalise, any of the beast women/girls, any of the girls/women in his village or anywhere else etc? He ONLY touched Eris, and Eris was just as perverted towards him, which was left out in the anime. Even that he toned down a LOT at the end when Eris left. Everything with Sara was consensual. He touched the beast girls, because he was allowed to. Not only this, he never tried to force anything with anyone if they objected. When he tried to push too far with Eris, he was promply brought down to Earth and he apologised. He never repeated the mistake again.
Now for his other qualities, he is brave, respectful (except the perviness), kind, humble, unjudgemental, impartial, helpful, sacrificing, empathetic, understanding, studious, intelligent, curious, and always helping the weak as taught by his father and always willing to acknowledge his mistakes and grow and take advice from anyone no matter who they are.

Yeah, he's the complete opposite of Arthur from The Beginning After the End. Arthur actually does his best for everyone around him before himself so he can protect everyone. Plus, he isn't a pervert. I've read the Light Novel/Web Novel up to volume 18 and I LOVE Rudius. I don't understand everyone who hates the show/Rudius because he's a bad person. How many times have we gotten a protagonist who is just a virtuous person who may have flaws, but nothing so bad they'd be hated over it. Rudius has so many MAJOR flaws as a person and it's refreshing. It's even better when he finally overcomes these flaws. Don't think of Mushoku Tensei in terms of it's plot, it's a character driven show about how Rudius grows as a person throughout his new shot at life.
Not only that, but his character begins to change greatly once you get to the demon continent and his travels thereof.

In his current life Paul and Zenith are MUCH better parents than Rudy's old parents were. To not take any action after your son was physically and sexually assaulted other than a cheap "keep your chin up! Don't let them get to you!" shows callousness and weakness in my eyes. I was strong enough to fight off my bullies but my dad was still there for me and told the school officials to keep them off me or he would give me permission to fight freely. Paul stayed involved in his son's life and didn't let him flounder when he was hurting, he learned from his mistakes as a parent and did his best to make Rudy a better man than he ever was. In my opinion, Rudy was a broken, and terrified person not a horrible one.

I think that a major thing that should've been mentioned in the video is that he did have redemption in his previous life as well - by literally sacrificing himself and his miserable life for others. The weight of this deed just goes over most people's heads and I can't really understand why people focus in on character flaws, while there's tons of positives and good that the character has going for them as well.
While it's hard to quantify the good a person might do compared to the bad, the MC's first life was neutral in terms of morality, while I guess there was no question that he was toxic from an outside view (hurting the people around him). But the context we get for his life, and the non-existent support he got from his family, it's not hard to understand. If you've been stuck in your room for 10+ years, are afraid to even go outside, and you are expected to go to a gathering of many tens of people, outside, I am sorry but that's horrible. Now jacking off during that time did make him look bad, but he shut out the bad information, while he is an adult he drew the shortest of straws you can, and there was absolutely no one who understood him.
In terms of character flaws in the other life - he has a lot, sure, many carried over from his other life, but there was no moment where he was trying to literally harm a person, might he have had motives that we deem immoral? Yeah.. But every time he got his just desserts, and the other character (Eris) proved that she's independent, strong and is able to make her own choices in punching Rudeus's face in when he tries to cross that immoral line. Rudeus never forced himself on characters who were weak or abused his power (the few moments when he made use of certain situations immorally, he always had reflections afterwards, like literally every-single-time.). He always tried to protect those close to him, he tried to do good and he did do a lot of good for the people around him. His libido, while a big issue, doesn't remove all the crazy good that he did through his travels in the new world.. He would be a solid friend and he doesn't prey on random women, that already makes him far better than most of the people in that world.
Finally a proper comment people act as if kids at that age don't have improper thoughts ever they don't take into consideration kids can actually have lewd thoughts without even knowing they are lewd or even hitting puberty.
i won't describe what they were as am taking myself as the example but it started as early as a first grader .

He def feels guilty, it's the main reason why he even tells nanahoshi to give a letter to his siblings that beat him up and disowned him, with the not saying how sorry he was and how he should of done better and about how they were in the right. Lots of small details in the web novel is a motive to improving himself. He def feels bad about not showing up, he even mentions it in his thoughts, and we all know he feels like a scum for not bothering to show up to his parents funeral even after the mother supported him when he became a shut in. Sure he doesn't completely begs for forgiveness but it is an important factor on why he cares so much about his family without him mentioning it. He def loves his parents, cares about them and doesn't want to loose them, even goes through a depression that almost killed him when he lost paul. Also keep in mind, he isn't in that world anymore, he has new parents that care, love, and support him more than his past parents ever did.
