I been waiting for this movie for a long time and the wait and money is worth it, SO AMAZING and imo it made Godzilla 2014 even better, now to be clear Godzilla was never about characters or fantastic story, when you expect a godzilla film, you expect monster fights, seeing humans dealing with the situation and overall have fun with these movies.
In my opinion these characters aren't annoying at all. I felt Ken Watanabe was excellent as Serizewa and Millie Bobby Brown did a pretty good job too. The cinematography was breathtaking and the soundtrack was SOOO good. I am actually disappointed you didn't bring up the soundtrack in more effect because even if you aren't much of a fan, you know Godzilla's theme and it was awesome whenever it popped up. Also I will go into a little spoilers so... When it comes to the characters especially Vera Farmiga's I feel I saw more reason to her switch than most others. She does give a clear idea of these titans bringing life back to the planet wherever they pop up. Her also trying to switch back is fine because she realizes that Ghidorah is trying to use the titans and wipe out all life plus the fact that Ghidorah doesn't belong to this planet also gives clear answers in my opinion.
Lol that's funny and true, but Godzilla was a guy in a rubber suit with alot off model skyscrapers getting destroyed back then. It was tongue in cheek/ it was cheesy, but cheesy good. Toho had a significant style or spin to their Godzilla movies that hooked you in.
You made some good points, but the character elements were always meaningless plugs in the best Japanese versions as well. KOTM kicks ass, it’s a two hour Nuclear bomb.
I actually loved that line for the sake of him being a Godzilla nerd scientist and is all about being enamoured with the creature. I've been a lifelong kaiju fan and I 99% agree with everything you have said on these last 2 godzillas. The human stuff was so damned bad....

This movie is fan service and achieved what it set out to achieve. I don't think for a second that if they wanted to write compelling characters they would have failed. Their heart was set on pleasing Godzilla fans because the 2014 movie fucked up in that aspect. We were promised a movie that was big and fun and nearly meaningless at least that's how godzilla fans preceived it and that's what we got and no one who actually enjoys the old Godzilla movies from toho will hate this. Infact if you set this next to those movies this is 12x less ridiculous and I know most godzilla fans still enjoy the campiness in those so if that says anything these critical analysis of these movies aren't warranted. This was made for the fans.
My only gripe with this movie was not enough Mothra. They gave her an amazing redesign, made her the most beautiful she's been and did nothing with her.
Great review Cody, i agree that some of the characters are written a bit naff & not fleshed out but overall this was a far better Godzilla movie which features some epic fights. Sometimes ya just want to see huge monsters fighting a lot on-screen lol. I liked this movie. It delivered on what I wanted, EPIC ACTION! And the movie screamed B movie to me and I kind of liked that with how stupid it was. I just let the logic go and just laughed at the stupid stuff and had a blast with the action.

This is why I come to this channel. I went in feeling the same as you, and left feeling the same. The people sucked in this movie and they made no sense. The monsters fighting were cool especially in the first half, but then when Godzilla dies in the middle of the movie I felt it just took a huge stand still
I just watched the Movie today (Imax theater a must), action packed pretty much from start to finish, Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra look fantastic and the Monster action is plentiful, who cares about the people in it, I give this flick 3-Stars.
I’m seeing a second time tonight I really loved this movie I didn’t really feel disappointed in the performance from the cast I thought everything flowed real good maybe after the second viewing I’ll feel the same.
Though they do talk about why they’re releasing the titans. Like a forest fire replenishes the soil, lava creates land. There was co-existence in the past with these monsters and they give off radiation that replenishes the land. They showed it in San Fran and Vegas.
I went in with very little expectation and i was actually surprised at how much i enjoyed it! And i didn't like Kong: Skull Island. I thought this movie had cheese in all the right places! Human characters were very meh though. Visuals were Fantastic.
I have Nostalgia guilty of pleasure for Godzilla 1998 I liked Godzilla 2014 I love this movie enjoyed the humans in this played by good actors the Godzilla and monster moments blew me away it's a 5 of 5 for me good job for giving your honest thoughts man

This one is the first Godzilla I actually loved. It was good enough to me to go and see the other 2 in it's universe. And I don't get why everyone is upset with the characters? I thought they were fine. Not spectacular or amazing, no oscars coming out of it, but I enjoyed the fuck out of it. Anyway, to each their own. :)

Since when Hollywood has done anything decent in developing human characters in big blockbusters in the past decade. It baffles me that some of those flicks have 3 or more writers attached and the whole thing feels like it was written by a 5th grader.
Yeah, this movie was basically a love letter to people who are huge Godzilla fans, which is why I think reviews are so polarizing. I'm a big Godzilla fan so this was honestly my most anticipated movie of the year and for me it delivered everything I wanted from a Godzilla movie. I loved it, but I can see how people might not like it if Godzilla isn't really their thing...and I'm not trying to imply people who disliked the movie dislike Godzilla in general, I'm just saying they're probably not the type of people who were smashing Ghidora and Mothra action figures together while watching King Kong vs. Godzilla as a kid. I was one of those nerds, so this was up my alley.
Yeah I’ll be honest I enjoyed this human story arc more than the 2014 film. This family arc I thought was more investing. I agree about the 2014 dullness after Cranston’s death. But I am an OG fan of the Toho series and absolutely loved KOTM. It was an American version of the classic Toho films with the cheesiness. The classic Godzilla March, roar, Mothras theme music ( fairies singing replaced with instruments ) , fairy arc in a realistic version of twins throughout generations of family. If you’re a long term Godzilla fan you’ll pick up on all the references from Toho in KOTM. The mother and shady organization have the Thanos Idea Of killing half the population to save the earth not knowing the smarts Ghidorah has. I think Mr. Russels character was important. He worked for Monarch, left after the events of 2014, he tracks animals and knows their instincts, he’s in it to find his family.
Okay, Cody the most awesome, I am going to have to say, I LOVED THE MOVIE! I am a Godzilla fan, huge, fan! Growing up in the 1980’s there was always a Godzilla Film on Saturday during creature double feature on our local UHF station! I thought this movie did enough nods to not only Destroyah but the whole scene at the end w Dr. Serizawa totally recalling and paying tribute to changes in the Dr. Serizawa characterizations! I did buy the family situation and I guess having seen every Godzilla movie, I think that I have seen much worse character development. The cringe inducing joke yes, was vomit inducing but not to the point where it would kill the movie for me. And yes I thought that Millie Bobby Brown’s character sneaking into Fenway Park was a stretch but it didn’t matter at all to me! I have overlooked worse over the course of the Godzilla films! But the reason for these films, the fights, freaking awesome! At one point when Godzilla let out his roar it came from behind in the iMax theater and my spouse jumped ten feet high! Worth the price of admission. I got so excited seeing each one of Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra! Seriously it was like Monsters All Out Attack. I loved it and that Mothra revives Godzilla to finish off Ghidorah! I get that not everyone enjoys these movies but I must say, I loved every second and never checked the time once for a two hour and twelve minute movie. You are one of the most awesome UA-camrs and I trust and appreciate your point of view, even when we have difference of opinion. I don’t think the plots and character development will ever meet the standard you are looking for but Kaiju fans, this movie IMHO was awesome and all I was looking for! Thank you for a great place to exchange ideas!
As someone who saw some of the japanese Godzilla Movies as a kid like Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla vs. Destorotyah, Godzilla: Final Wars etc. I really enjoyed Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters (2019). It was in my opinion a big improvement from the previous Godzilla (2014) Movie on the Monster Fights department. Yes, pretty much all of the characters are boring, bland and annoying but that is nothing new for the Godzilla Franchise if you saw the previous 35 Godzilla Movies before that one. I give this movie 3.5 out 5.
I thought the My God Zilla line was cringy as helllll but I guess none of my friends got it cause I looked around and all 5 of my friends didn’t react to it at all. But I’ll always be a Godzilla fan boy so I still loved the freakin monster action, still enjoyed your review and can’t say any of your points where wrong. Nice review Cody
Glad you had some fun but for any real long time godzilla fan the monster fights are ALL that matters and the human fodder, is just b.s to move the semi needed plot along. This movie is going to destroy the box office for anything like this as this is what WE have wanted for decades... an the FIRST from an American funded studio..... I do agree Cody awesome human plot (please just 40% of any godzilla film) would help make the MOVIE overall good but like most horror fans gave up on that and just want amazing kills Godzilla fans just want monster screen time an want it for MOST of the film :).
Just saw it yesterday! I honestly enjoyed the fact that the acting was bad because it just made laugh, so I had a good time with it. I definitely understand why people wouldn’t like it though haha
A teacher at my school seen this film and he said he was so disappointed he every damn time there was flipping fight and I've seen scenes from this film and I do agree the camera is too friggin close to the monsters when godzilla and not 4 headed dragon was fighting him the camera was way too close to them you could not see fights that well and it was boring like in kong skull island the camera was zoomed out just enough to see the sights perfectly and that's exactly what they should have done in this movie but that's not the case with Godzilla King Of The Monsters
These movie are there own genre, human characters are just a vehicle to watch the monsters fight. If you were to watch all 35 of the Japanese godzilla movies there would maybe be 5 human characters you care about. These types of movies let the monsters tell the story and this movie did an ok job of doing that. The only criticism I would give is that they cut away from the fights WAY to much.
I'll let you know tomorrow night, going to see it, and looking forward to it. However, I have been a G fan since I was a toddler. So I would have to say we will be looking at things from different perspectives.
The one good character they had which was in the previous film dies in this one. That was disappointing, but I do agree with you about the human characters. The movie was still phenomenal, especially with all the monster fighting.

I agree with the human characters but that's about it, the rest was pure fun and i respect you might not enjoy this movie since you are not a fan, i mean I'm not a fan of Star Wars(i get annoyed by people and i do try watching it but get to sleep in minutes) but glad you're telling those who are fans that will enjoy it, I certainly did. On Kong, Skull Island does explain that he's in his teens and they were in the '70s so do expect Kong grow and be at the same size as Godzilla.
I agree with you on this, but to a lesser degree. There were a few human characters that I did like. Millie's character, for one, and Ken Wantanabe's, because he just speaks with such a presence that it's hard to dislike him. Despite having MORE monster scenes (and all of them were astounding), there are also MORE scenes where monsters are battling, you get excited and start cheering YES, YES in your head, and then humans somehow take over again and it absolutely bursts your bubble. The scene where Rodan and Ghidorah are going at one another and then the airplane slowly moves into focus and we have to hear that main military lady start blabbing about "what to do" is SO. IRRITATING. And Vera Farmiga's character (I've said this in every comment I've made about this movie) is so unlikable that I just wanted Godzilla to step on her and end her misery. I honestly wanted her to die.
Listen I get it! I felt the same way about “Kong Skull Island” the first time watching! The second viewing was better for me thinking the movie is more watchable and entertaining. It was good,but not great! However ,King Kong isn’t Godzilla and in my eyes I see his movies more entertaining than King Kong’s! Also, people don’t watch monster movies to build human characters! The character development is Godzilla and he needed more of it this time around,because the director shortchanged him last time! Why would you ever shortchange a very cool monster like Godzilla?!🙄
Thank you!! Thank you for legitimizing how I felt!! I went into the movie with a blank slate (haven't seen the other Godzilla movies) and was mostly frustrated by the writing. I was excited to see all these fantastic actors, but I just had to watch them try their hardest with a weak script. I adore Vera Farmiga. She deserved better! When her character decided to awaken Ghidora I was baffled, and her justification for doing so felt irrational at best. At least the CGI, soundtrack, and sound effects for the kaiju sequences was great, but the bad writing outweighed it. I joked at the end that Mothra was the best character. She couldn't be ruined by bad dialogue, and even had a heroic little arc. Last thing, a drinking game for this film: take a sip every time 1) the characters are jostled around, 2) the screens glitch out for a bit, and 3) the lights flicker.
I don't even agree with you that the monsters and fights were a positive, even that was a big disappointment. It didn't feel like there was that much more Godzilla and monsters in this than the last one. What action and monster fights they have is poorly done with shakey cam and murky look. Plus they did constantly tease and cut away in this movie as well, there was even a part where a plane comes down and blocks the view.
To be truthfully Honest, i didn't think the Movie was going to be disappointed for me, my Family liked it but i am the only one who felt Disappointed about it, i waited 5 Years for this Film and we have Honestly gotten the most Dumbest Main Character i ever seen. Yes, i am talking about the Mother in the Film, holy crap, was i disappointed and completely upset by it, the Jokes sucks in which you're right about the Jokes BUT the Ending overall was Fantastic but i am still Disappointed. P.S. The CGI was okay, it was easily noticeable in some scenes but not too bad.

DarkLight90 there were less cut here, and more in 2014. And at least here when they cut to the humans, they still showed the Kaijus because the humans were basically in the battlefield. Oh and there were cut aways even in the old movies... sometimes even more cut aways than KOTM
@@donatodicugno3630 Not really. At least in the Toho films you get full-focus on the monster battles in the 3rd act with very few cutaways unlike here where it was constantly cutting away which was really daunting.
You have to know what kind of a movie fan you are going into a movie like this. I grew up with the old school Japanese Godzilla movies. I even enjoy the Roland Emmerich movie even tho it's a terrible movie. But at the end of the day nobody goes to a movie like this for the characters. It's all about the monster battles

Almost everything you've said about the human characters is true with something worse, the polygon anime trilogy on Netflix, except in there, it is SOOOOOO much worse as the lifeless, unlikable characters have far more screentime than godzilla.
Not all the characters were terrible, Dr. Serisawa (Ken Watanabe) was great. The scene of him sacrificing himself to save Godzilla was beautiful.

I grew up watching Godzilla films on Creature Double Feature on Channel 56 in Boston. And one thing they all have in common - Shitty human characters.

God seeing godzilla a 355f and 108mt kaiju run is literally the most terrifying thing in cinema history
To me just the scene where Godzilla shows up in Antarctica in the snow to challenge Ghidorah was worth the admission price...
I didnt even think the visuals were satisfying because the editing was so choppy and it was hard to see anything with the smoke, rain, and darkness

But I am an OG fan of the Toho series and absolutely loved KOTM. It was an American version of the classic Toho films with the cheesiness. The classic Godzilla March, roar, Mothras theme music ( fairies singing replaced with instruments ) , fairy arc in a realistic version of twins throughout generations of family. If you’re a long term Godzilla fan you’ll pick up on all the references from Toho in KOTM.
The mother and shady organization have the Thanos Idea Of killing half the population to save the earth not knowing the smarts Ghidorah has.
I think Mr. Russels character was important. He worked for Monarch, left after the events of 2014, he tracks animals and knows their instincts, he’s in it to find his family.
Okay, Cody the most awesome, I am going to have to say, I LOVED THE MOVIE! I am a Godzilla fan, huge, fan! Growing up in the 1980’s there was always a Godzilla Film on Saturday during creature double feature on our local UHF station! I thought this movie did enough nods to not only Destroyah but the whole scene at the end w Dr. Serizawa totally recalling and paying tribute to changes in the Dr. Serizawa characterizations! I did buy the family situation and I guess having seen every Godzilla movie, I think that I have seen much worse character development. The cringe inducing joke yes, was vomit inducing but not to the point where it would kill the movie for me. And yes I thought that Millie Bobby Brown’s character sneaking into Fenway Park was a stretch but it didn’t matter at all to me! I have overlooked worse over the course of the Godzilla films!
But the reason for these films, the fights, freaking awesome! At one point when Godzilla let out his roar it came from behind in the iMax theater and my spouse jumped ten feet high! Worth the price of admission. I got so excited seeing each one of Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra! Seriously it was like Monsters All Out Attack. I loved it and that Mothra revives Godzilla to finish off Ghidorah!
I get that not everyone enjoys these movies but I must say, I loved every second and never checked the time once for a two hour and twelve minute movie. You are one of the most awesome UA-camrs and I trust and appreciate your point of view, even when we have difference of opinion. I don’t think the plots and character development will ever meet the standard you are looking for but Kaiju fans, this movie IMHO was awesome and all I was looking for! Thank you for a great place to exchange ideas!
As someone who saw some of the japanese Godzilla Movies as a kid like Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla vs. Destorotyah, Godzilla: Final Wars etc. I really enjoyed Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters (2019). It was in my opinion a big improvement from the previous Godzilla (2014) Movie on the Monster Fights department. Yes, pretty much all of the characters are boring, bland and annoying but that is nothing new for the Godzilla Franchise if you saw the previous 35 Godzilla Movies before that one.
I give this movie 3.5 out 5.
I thought the My God Zilla line was cringy as helllll but I guess none of my friends got it cause I looked around and all 5 of my friends didn’t react to it at all. But I’ll always be a Godzilla fan boy so I still loved the freakin monster action, still enjoyed your review and can’t say any of your points where wrong. Nice review Cody
Glad you had some fun but for any real long time godzilla fan the monster fights are ALL that matters and the human fodder, is just b.s to move the semi needed plot along. This movie is going to destroy the box office for anything like this as this is what WE have wanted for decades... an the FIRST from an American funded studio..... I do agree Cody awesome human plot (please just 40% of any godzilla film) would help make the MOVIE overall good but like most horror fans gave up on that and just want amazing kills Godzilla fans just want monster screen time an want it for MOST of the film :).
Just saw it yesterday! I honestly enjoyed the fact that the acting was bad because it just made laugh, so I had a good time with it. I definitely understand why people wouldn’t like it though haha
A teacher at my school seen this film and he said he was so disappointed he every damn time there was flipping fight and I've seen scenes from this film and I do agree the camera is too friggin close to the monsters when godzilla and not 4 headed dragon was fighting him the camera was way too close to them you could not see fights that well and it was boring like in kong skull island the camera was zoomed out just enough to see the sights perfectly and that's exactly what they should have done in this movie but that's not the case with Godzilla King Of The Monsters

These movie are there own genre, human characters are just a vehicle to watch the monsters fight. If you were to watch all 35 of the Japanese godzilla movies there would maybe be 5 human characters you care about. These types of movies let the monsters tell the story and this movie did an ok job of doing that. The only criticism I would give is that they cut away from the fights WAY to much.

The one good character they had which was in the previous film dies in this one. That was disappointing, but I do agree with you about the human characters. The movie was still phenomenal, especially with all the monster fighting.

Dude... Agreed. I was more excited for Godzilla than any other movie this year. Sadly.. I was disappointed with the movie. The story was awful, but the monster battles were awesome!
I agree with the human characters but that's about it, the rest was pure fun and i respect you might not enjoy this movie since you are not a fan, i mean I'm not a fan of Star Wars(i get annoyed by people and i do try watching it but get to sleep in minutes) but glad you're telling those who are fans that will enjoy it, I certainly did.
On Kong, Skull Island does explain that he's in his teens and they were in the '70s so do expect Kong grow and be at the same size as Godzilla.

First time I gotta disagree with your review but as a Godzilla fan since I was a kid I can understand it’s not for everyone.
I agree with you on this, but to a lesser degree. There were a few human characters that I did like. Millie's character, for one, and Ken Wantanabe's, because he just speaks with such a presence that it's hard to dislike him. Despite having MORE monster scenes (and all of them were astounding), there are also MORE scenes where monsters are battling, you get excited and start cheering YES, YES in your head, and then humans somehow take over again and it absolutely bursts your bubble. The scene where Rodan and Ghidorah are going at one another and then the airplane slowly moves into focus and we have to hear that main military lady start blabbing about "what to do" is SO. IRRITATING. And Vera Farmiga's character (I've said this in every comment I've made about this movie) is so unlikable that I just wanted Godzilla to step on her and end her misery. I honestly wanted her to die.

The human characters may not have been perfect but they were definitely better this time. The 2014 humans were so so so sooo dull.

Listen I get it! I felt the same way about “Kong Skull Island” the first time watching! The second viewing was better for me thinking the movie is more watchable and entertaining. It was good,but not great! However ,King Kong isn’t Godzilla and in my eyes I see his movies more entertaining than King Kong’s! Also, people don’t watch monster movies to build human characters! The character development is Godzilla and he needed more of it this time around,because the director shortchanged him last time! Why would you ever shortchange a very cool monster like Godzilla?!🙄
Thank you!! Thank you for legitimizing how I felt!! I went into the movie with a blank slate (haven't seen the other Godzilla movies) and was mostly frustrated by the writing. I was excited to see all these fantastic actors, but I just had to watch them try their hardest with a weak script. I adore Vera Farmiga. She deserved better! When her character decided to awaken Ghidora I was baffled, and her justification for doing so felt irrational at best.
At least the CGI, soundtrack, and sound effects for the kaiju sequences was great, but the bad writing outweighed it. I joked at the end that Mothra was the best character. She couldn't be ruined by bad dialogue, and even had a heroic little arc.
Last thing, a drinking game for this film: take a sip every time 1) the characters are jostled around, 2) the screens glitch out for a bit, and 3) the lights flicker.
I don't even agree with you that the monsters and fights were a positive, even that was a big disappointment. It didn't feel like there was that much more Godzilla and monsters in this than the last one. What action and monster fights they have is poorly done with shakey cam and murky look. Plus they did constantly tease and cut away in this movie as well, there was even a part where a plane comes down and blocks the view.
To be truthfully Honest, i didn't think the Movie was going to be disappointed for me, my Family liked it but i am the only one who felt Disappointed about it, i waited 5 Years for this Film and we have Honestly gotten the most Dumbest Main Character i ever seen. Yes, i am talking about the Mother in the Film, holy crap, was i disappointed and completely upset by it, the Jokes sucks in which you're right about the Jokes BUT the Ending overall was Fantastic but i am still Disappointed.
P.S. The CGI was okay, it was easily noticeable in some scenes but not too bad.

DarkLight90 there were less cut here, and more in 2014. And at least here when they cut to the humans, they still showed the Kaijus because the humans were basically in the battlefield. Oh and there were cut aways even in the old movies... sometimes even more cut aways than KOTM
@@donatodicugno3630 Not really. At least in the Toho films you get full-focus on the monster battles in the 3rd act with very few cutaways unlike here where it was constantly cutting away which was really daunting.
You have to know what kind of a movie fan you are going into a movie like this. I grew up with the old school Japanese Godzilla movies. I even enjoy the Roland Emmerich movie even tho it's a terrible movie. But at the end of the day nobody goes to a movie like this for the characters. It's all about the monster battles
A better name for this movie should be Monster chasers. Liked it though

Almost everything you've said about the human characters is true with something worse, the polygon anime trilogy on Netflix, except in there, it is SOOOOOO much worse as the lifeless, unlikable characters have far more screentime than godzilla.
This movie was made by Godzilla fans for Godzilla fans. If you didn’t grow up watching Godzilla then this movies not for you.
