When you go after what you truly want as hard as you can, people will insult you, laugh behind your back and make it difficult for you. This ability to demonstrate traits that are in the western shadow (power, competence, masculinity) is actually very attractive so when people do this they're actually testing if you have a hold of the darkness (think Gandalf vs Saruman) or if it has control of you.
The interesting thing is that while the Dies Irae chant sounds dark and ominous, and the lyrics certainly start that way, if you look up the full chant it changes about halfway through into a prayer for forgiveness, grace, hope, and healing. This may indeed be a dark interpretation or occult reworking of the original as many occult sources rework christian inventions to their own purposes.
