I can't believe I never saw this video. I'm almost 60 and have been pulling my 500 ft well by myself for the past 24 years. I've pulled it maybe 8 times??
I butt up against the well casing a big rail road tie. Then I add half of one on top of it then a quarter and another. Then I took a chainsaw and cut a rounded slope into the casing so when I toe the pipe and wire it rides on the curve cut into the railroad tie. On each side of the stack I nailed a piece of outdoor plywood so the pipe doesn't wonder off an edge. I use a tripod I got long ago for pulling car engines. I winch up the pipe and lay it over the ties and hook it to a truck or garden tractor. The first couple times I attached it to a riding mower in gear spinning to go forward. I manually pulled on the pipe till the mower started to grip and took off with the pipe. Then I ran like hell to catch up to it running down the hill by itself. lol.
I just happen to search because I'm sick of this method and am getting older. I recently got a heavy frame for holding an outside wood burner tank. I'm planning on that supporting a 5 ft wheel. I'll turn the wheel and wrap up the pipe and wire.
I've gone through so many pumps, motor control boxes (actually only change the capacitors now. The switch never goes bad) and pressure switches its unbelievable. The cheap junk square D contacts burn up from being cheaply made and never aligned. I went to a heavy duty one but now think I'm installing a large relay. Actually a off delay time relay. So if the pump runs more than 10 seconds or whatever it shuts off itself and doesn't burn up. Thinking about an arduino and making it dance.

Nice job for such a deep well. My Dad's well died during December back in the late 90s. 200 feet down and no water, so we hung a come-along from a 2x4 tripod and pulled it up a few feet at a time, just like you did, in single digit temperatures outdoors. Replaced the pump, put on two sets of wires in parallel in case one broke later, then lowered it back down the well. Start to finish was less than a day and that pump is still running more than 25 years later. Your video brought back some memories. Glad to see your 'fun' happened during warm weather.

I have a water well service company in Alberta. You did great with adapting with the tools you had. I’ve seen people try and pull it themselves only to find out it’s 1200 feet deep and they drop it.
What happens after its dropped? How do you get it out?

There’s a few steps to prepare for that. Find the total depth and the pump setting depth off the well report. Then you know how far it dropped. Go down with lengths of steel till you get to the depth of the pitless. Try and thread into it. If that won’t work I made a length of rebar with splines welded to it and a coupler to thread to the steel. Lower that down past the pitless and turn it so it wraps the pipe and wire up and pull and pray it all comes with it. Will cost some hose and wire but at least you get it outa the well

Good thing you got good water! I have a 150ft deep well (pump set at 60ft) I'm considering tackling mine, but my water has a lot of minerals and iron in it,I'm sure it's got a lot of build-up on it. After seeing this video, I feel more confident about pulling it out, thanks for sharing!
Make sure you put the date of replacement of the pump on the cap for anyone wanting to know last time it was installed. Good job. You or anyone might use a wooden spool that electrical wire comes on for pulling out the pump and hose next time. Just anchor the supporting rod and spool with some heavy in opposite direction of the pull.

With a 2001 Goulds pump there is good chance that the impellers were breaking the center off the shaft. They switched to clear impellers back then and had an issue with that. If you want to check it out both ends are left handed thread to take it apart. Make SURE you can not drop that cable because if you do it stacks on top of the pump and there is no chance of pulling it out. You could spend days fishing or re-drill the well because of it. Next time tape it to the pipe like the rope so it couldn't fall down hole. Also take some silicone to the bottom of the cap to keep the critters out of it. Stay safe, Kenny

Chevy I’m the driveway is doing just fine... but no water right after a long hot day at work didn’t make me to happy today. Now I’m trying to figure out if I’m fixing it myself or am I paying someone to fix it.. meanwhile I live on 100 acres of open fields and woods and have plenty of bottled water for a outdoor shower 😆

Yes , I hear you brother ! I had same situation . I would gladly let some professional to work on my well pump ! But it was Friday night , and no one answered my frantic calls . So I end up to spend all Saturday to make my new well pump to work , but I have to say , depth of my well was only 250 feet compared to your 500 ! Great job !

@@ambergreen6714 It did! I was having trouble disconnecting the crow's foot thing where it does a 90 degree bend into the house. Once that was off it lifted out with the engine hoist and a couple of vices used to grab and lift and to brake and hold.

My well is 450 ft. If I did that work my back would be so blown out that I wouldn’t be able to take a shower. You da man!
I'm watching this way late...but KUDOS! A great mechanical mind can accomplish anything. I do not recommend anyone ever trying this, glad you didn't get hurt. And to the contractors bitching about pump types...All manufactures make crap pumps to sell to box stores, hopefully the well drillers/installers are buying the quality pumps that aren't sold over the counter. My 610' just shit to bed and I'm pulling it tomorrow. The owners of the home had it changed in 2014 but here I am setting the tripod up and watching pump pull videos. Hopefully it don't happen to you because 610 is not going to be fun in the am! Not going to pay thousands for someone to do it either though! Country boys can survive!!!!
I pulled 70 ft of iron pipe out of my well a couple months ago. The pitless adapter was messed up so wouldn't release so I just pulled it. I started out using my a frame with a chain fall but switched to the wrecker when I learned it was iron pipe! Brother in-law was standing in skid steer bucket unscrewing pipe as I pulled up with the wrecker. I replaced it with black plastic pipe like yours. I started mine on Saturday and than when I realized I needed a new pitless adapter I ran the pipe out the top and across the yard to my outside spicot on the house cause I wasn't going with a shower or shitter for 2 days! Lol. Pulled that thing 3 or 4 times before I was done!

Good video enjoyed it. I see people being Sissy about fresh paved driveways all the time ,you can drive on a paved driveway within hours you don’t need to wait days. I had a neighbor wait weeks on a fresh concrete paved driveway insane.

Good job got to be one good pump to bring water 500 ft up then carry another good distance to pressure tank what a work out I pulled one 800 ft I know how bad it is good job man lol I used tractor front end loader to do the 800 ft one had one guy standing at well while I backed front loader up the road lol

Did you remember to put a few gallons of bleach in there? With 500FT of hose, You've got a lot of surface area to bleach the insides of those pipes.
Only one bag of pool shock that contains calcium hypochlorite will treat a well up to 700ft and bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is very Corrosive and it is not recommended.
we just got a quote of $2200 to replace our well pump (Lord knows we don't have that just laying around) and ours isn't near as deep as your well. it is great to be able to look stuff up on youtube to see if it is something we could tackle or something to leave to the professionals.

YOU my friend are a man after my own mold. You had a problem, you created a number of solutions to yank that bugger up. Great thinking with the engine crane, pulley, winch,,,,,,,, It may not have been the fastest, easiest or most efficient, but it did work in the end. Now to watch 9:09 to the end.
You saved thousands be glad it was roll pipe .its a whole different ball game with sch 80 PVC or stainless

Getting ready to do a 350 foot well of mine here in AZ. had well company come take a look and they are so busy they basically said I should do it myself with a dc pump and run it on solar. So thanks for the confidence builder.
Looks to me like for a non plumber you did it the best you could and no doubt saved a ton of money! This was very helpful and the Gould pump is the only choice! I’ve been reading the ratings common folks like us give and I wouldn’t buy anything else after reading them.

Excellent Video, I need to replace my pump for auxiliary water supply, as I got connected to city supply in 1985.
I am only approximately 100 foot down, so it should be some what easier then what you had to contend with.
My pipe is 1 inch galvanized, I will likely reinstall new pump with pvc.

I'm also guessing you might have substantial voltage loss with that length of wire unless it's nice and oversized for that pump?

Great setup. I'd do likewise but mine is rigid iron pipe and won't bend away like that. Maybe I'll give it a try and just remove or cut away the sections as they come up.

Just did one at my place. It was also a bastard although it came right out. No fighting the T handle and I used antisieze when putting back in.
I know I’m extremely late to the party, but next time, If you get a larger pulley, maybe a 24” hook sheave, you can tie a rope to the top of the pipe and that black pipe will flex around the pulley and you can just drive your quad 500’ out in one go. Could have it pulled in minutes. Probably better to use a truck because it’s heavier, but could probably make it work with the quad.

my uncle ran over the well and now we have to somehow fix the casing cheaply because we dont have money to hire anyone.
my mom has stage 4 cancer and cant work and my stepdad just passed away. were swamped with bills and hiring someone is far to expensive.
im the only one in the house with a full time job...
so my plan is....
get a pvc coupler and a section of pvc pipe
pull out the pump
dig down around it
inflate a balloon inside below where I'll cut the pipe to catch debris
then cut the pipe using tape for a straight cut guide
clean debris and dirt from pipe
Remove balloon
glue on the the repair section
unbend the section of steel pipe
and replace the pump and cap.
i hope that sounds reasonable. shouldn't cost more than $20 for the PVC its just a ton of work.

I had a 1hp was struck by lightening the plumper replaced with a 1/2hp last summer and the thing is getting weak already.

Great for you. The well pump replacements are ery expensive here. Highway robbery. Quote for neighbor was 2800, ridicules. I have done a few wells myself. but no more then 200 feet.

should have put a check valve or two since the pipe line was so long that way their isn't a back hammering on the top of that pump set an inline check valve about 12ft above the pump and another one at the top of the well casing about three or five feet down H2O Mechanic on Utube, recommends this even thoe the pump has one built inside it.. the extra chk valve relives the back psi hammering and 500ft is allot of downwards psi

Brother I'm halfway thru the video. At this point I am hoping that you checked the relay and capacitor first. I have seen stuck relays send power always to the start windings and cause the overheat protection on the pump to go bad. Usually this will fry and short the capacitor and stop. Once and a while it will keep current to the pump.

guys after watching the video, and looking at the detail I notice the pump was already attached to a safety rope. would not have been easier to pull up with it? just an observation. I have been messing with pump myself and there lots to learn.

What model # of Goulds is it? Just curious since it lasted 17 years.
Two year old video I know but did you happen notice how far down in the water your pump was suspended? Last time I had to pull my well the water table had dropped so the pump was sucking air and had to drop the pump to compensate. Luckily I had plenty of depth yet. The water tables are dropping. JFYI!

I’m confused how u used poly pipe for 500’ when it’s only rated for 160 to 200 psi? My well is 400’ and with the pressure tank I need 223 psi….I can’t find a 400’ continuous length of pipe that can handle that amount of pressure.
