Thank you so much for posting this. I have a short book he wrote on this but I’ve never heard his lecture. I worked with Earl for several semesters and talked with him about this topic. Very thorough.
That was a very good biblical look at the drinking of alcohol. Thanks . Straight from the Bible.

Does it really take almost an hour to say loving God with your whole heart, soul, and mind, incorporates being sober and watchful.
This was really a very good lecture or speech and many good thoughts. I did not agree with everything said but there was a lot of good things said and amen for that.
every church of christ since its beginning in 1827 until prohibition used real wine on the lords table. Walter Scott said this in 1851 "you only can use real wine on the lords table and when you are sick" Paul said "do not get drunk on wine" That proves that wine means wine in all of the new testament. Anyone that does not believe this is a religious fanatic.
Alexander Campbell, Walter Scott, Thomas Campbell, Barton W Stone and millions throughout history drank real wine every first day of the week. Paul said drinking wine was good for your health he was not talking about drinking grape juice.

@@rogerdraper71 in my opinion the church of christ started in 1827. It started with the Walter Scott plan of salvation in 1827_______________Hear, Believe, Repent, Baptism, Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit. This was the Walter Scott plan of salvation and not Gods plan of salvation. No one was ever told to do this until 1827, ----------not one person in the history of the christian church.
No where in the bible does wine mean grape juice.
I am very disappointed to see this posting from a scholar for whom I have always had the profoundest of respect. This video completely shakes my faith in him. He was a missionary to Italy where alcoholic beverages flow freely. I labored in a similar capacity in a similar environment in the nation of Chile and faced the issue of Christians and alcohol usage on a regular basis. Forged out of the fires of controversy there were a number of studies I have introduced to the brotherhood (and the world) dealing with this topic. Many such studies are in Spanish. But please hear my response to the kinds of arguments set forth in Dr. Edwards lecture at ua-cam.com/video/I_Xm3qyUXWg/v-deo.htmlsi=NoZIZfqaV2PD6V_0 . I plan to post more on the topic soon and perhaps do a special point-by-point review of this presentation from FHU from a few years ago. I am also saddened that my alma mater would host this destructive lecture. Worst of all was Dr. Edwards insinuation that his moderationist stance does not pose temptations for young people that possibly could cause their stumbling and eventually leaving the church. Rather, he asserts, it is people as I who believe scripture condemns the recreational use of alcoholic beverages who discourage the youth and contributes to their loss from our ranks.
