Hi Tim, I am a recreational Crabber in Florida. We use Cored/Weighted line so it sinks in the water more or less below the buoy. It prevents excess line floating out on the surface away from the buoy where it can't be easily seen. I am so so sorry for your experience. I personally never set pots in the vicinity of a channel.
Wow Tim! What a change from the late night/early morning live streams. So happy to have our Tim back and overjoyed that, although pricey, you were able to come out of it all relatively unscathed. Let us know if you're thinking about coming back toward Cleveland and maybe we can get a meet-n-greet together. Fair Winds my friend!
This was a huge learning episode along with a fun time riding along with you Tim!! I am so glad everything worked out ref the crab pot(s) and getting back on your way. If you decide to come back south on the Mississippi, that will be awesome to follow. Thanks again
If you haven't already done it I would recommend the North Channel area of Ontario as an excellent summer cruising grounds. Killarney, Bay Fine, Little Current, Spanish, and Gore Bay are some of the best destinations I have had the pleasure of visiting. And if you are planning on heading South, the Illinois and Tombigbee Rivers are the way to go.
Tim I’m so glad things worked out Very nice video Thank you for sharing the good and the bad and keeping it real You’ve gone through too bad dilemmas with Lady K and come out on top Thanks for knowledge about sailing and looking forward to more All the best to Tim Fair winds
Awesome vid brother. Shout out to my brothers in blue in VA beach. Great guys out there. I have had the pleasure of working closely with them on several cases of mine. Cheers to your new crew as well.
Missed you at Ches City, I was at the tiki bar across from you last sunday. I was on last day of vaca, thought you were further south. I just tuned in after a couple weeks with no SM and saw what happened. Del R&B is no place to be moving at night. Better days ahead for you. See ya next time around.
Never backed in , it’s easy , work out your prop push and use the rudder to counter steer , you’ll work it out , those kids in blue coats must have got board and motored off , check your intake for sea grass , good vid thanks
Interesting story. I was always wondering at what point do you call SeaTow if you're in a tough situation, and what can they do. Good to see one example.
If you're hitting Lake Michigan near the chicago area I live about 20 minutes away in Northern Indiana. You're more than welcome to stay with us on the hard if you need to.
Don't know how far North you want to go but Prince Edward Island is a cool place! Plus, with the record high Lake Ontario Level, you would make great time out the St. Lawrence Seaway. Or, even turn South along the Maine coast.
@Lady K Sailing, @19:53, that's a Large ATB (Articulated Tug Barge) owned my OSG. She runs from the Philly area to Bigstone anchorage where she Lighters (takes cargo (crude oil) off of Supertankers so they can bring their draft up enough so they can make it up the Delaware River.
Glad to see you in good spirits Tim, especially after all the bad luck. I’m also glad to hear you will keep sailing once you get your 15 days in. Great episode!
The steel core is inside the crab pot line in order that the line sinks. They don't want it floating on the surface when the tide is low causing an even greater hazard to traffic.
Your videos are looking very pro now. That green stuff is called duckweed which I actually bought from a pet supply place so my baby fry had a place to hide in. Very cool so once you leave Canada again why not check out Cuba? I am with you in spirit so go where the wind blows you.
Hey, if/when you come back up the Erie Canal, look me up. I'm not a boater but am interested in becoming one. (Actually looking at a 26 foot Grampian at the moment.) I live about 300 yards from the Canal near Tonawanda. West Canal Park and Marina is right nearby so you can dock within walking distance to my house. (Shoreline sounding is 8 feet there, lots of depth) There is a grocery and a station that sells diesel fuel nearby as well, so it's a convenient place to stop. If you need to grab some food or fuel or whatnot I would happily chauffer you around, just let me know when you will be in the area, if you are coming by.
Why not dock and fly to Canada? Visit family and fly back to the boat. You'd be a lot closer to the warmth instead of putting hours on that diesel. Nothing wrong with going on the hard and working a few months in Mc D's or Home Depot to build up that kitty. Delos had to do it...
Going down the Mississippi or the Tenn Tom would be very interesting, but it is too late in the year. You will hit cold weather. But you are from Canada so what if the mornings are below freezing !
Tim, another great video! Just wondering what size boat you would recommend for those of us who want to follow in your wake? If you wanted to get to Australia or SE Asia would that change?
I’m fully aware of he issue of crab pots in the ICW for some reason they drop them very close to the main channel at times the buoy can be in the edge of the channel on a rather choppy day the buoy can be very hard to see at a distance and on my boat from the helm I can see directly in front of my boats clipper bow whe. I get close. So one day I drove right over a buoy and I could hear it on the hull all the way down and then it happened sucked it right in the prop by the time I could do anything it was all the way up damaged my prop bad and later after I cleared the line I had two big chunks missing for two blades and one blade broke off completely. As you can imagine the prop was way out of balance and vibration was horrible. Cost me a lot of head ache haulout to change the prop plus the cost of the new prop. I was still well inside the channel markers when it happened. And inside the charted course on my chart plotter. So ya you need to watch for crab pots even if you’re in the channel. The crab fishermen don’t intentionally drop them in the channel but they do drop them close enough that the line allows the buoy to be inside the channel.
What about spending some time up in the Trent Severn? I know not “sailing” but neither would is the Mississippi. I’ve grown more interested in exploring some of the 20 or so thousands of miles of rivers and lakes in the US inland. Pretty cool where you can go. I’ll buy the barge and you bring the camera 😬. If you do make it to the gulf then you have a lot of great options waiting. I’ll look forward to following you along the way and thank you for sharing your experiences.
So, C-Tow or Boat US annual Towing subscription.~$100.00 US. For the amount of time you will be in US waters, cheap at three times the price. Check area coverages though through the cruising nets. Cheers bud.
Would it not be easier to keep going up the coast and get to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia? Would prevent a demasting for the canal, and I would have to think cruising Marthas Vineyard would be nice.
Glad it turned out ok! I was wondering... Since you are going in the great lakes...I think it could be a fist to record navigating the Saint -Lawrence seaway? I've never heard of any sailing channels that did it other than Shawn and Julia basically because they bought their boat in Quebec city...they went up river to Champlain Lake and went down to New York that way...
Hi, I just bought a 34’ with 6’ draft. This dismal swamp , will it take 6” or too shallow. Sail south in late November n cut thru to Bermuda , then SXM. Go for it, great video, always
I do the Dismal twice a year. You can go through with 6 feet but you might ride over an occasional log which will get your attattention but not be troublesome. One of the joys of that route us Robert at the deep creek lock who will play a conch shell. If you spend the night at Elizabeths Dock you czn visit him in the morning for coffee.
Tim I know this would probably require you to put lady K on dry dock for the winte if you stayed on the great lakes all summer. Just one Idea Or, I'm not sure, but can you get to the Mississippi river from lake Michigan? Maybe like do Erie, huron, Michigan than out to the Mississippi. Can that be done? Love to hear your thoughts on that. Lastly when you stop in Canada you need a nice single lady crew member who likes to sail and take her along...
So with Sea Tow insurance, it still cost you out of pocket to get towed to dock? I have had Sea Tow for approx 8 years and fortunately never had to use them. And those D*** crab pots and nets in the ICW! I launch my bay boat a few miles from masonboro inlet at Wrightsville beach and run to that inlet when going offshore. Man, the early mornings are like driving a obstacle course avoiding pots and nets. I know those guys have to make a living but it sucks when they are in the channel.
The name is fine don't understand the big issue. My dad used to work on the really big tug boats for many years, it was nice to see one again, bouchard, morton maybe what color was it? Next time show how the locks open most have never seen them. :0 peace
Hey Tim,Glad to see you're doing ok.What happened to" RJ " ? Can we assume you guys said your farewells and all? Myself I wouldn't have ventured up that green slimy river. Thats your call....Trying to figure out what was the attraction? Is it necessary to take the vessel out of the USA or is you Passport visa expiring?
Why not sail north with the gulf stream offshore? Why always on the ICW, I can see that once and a while but why not sail and avoid the crab pots and duckweed etc? The boat can handle that no? Just wondering
DISMAL SWAMP HAS TOO MUCH SHIT TO GET IN YOUR SEA STRAINER FOR YOUR ENGINE. YOU TOOK A CHANCE OF OVER HEATING WITH ALL THAT CRAP IN THE WATER. BUT YOU MADE IT. CHECK YOUR STRAINER THOUGH FOR JUNK IN IT.
Hi Tim,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am heading down that way this winter. Will learn from your experiences.
Thanks for watching!
Love your content very informative and educational like how you keep it super clean
Glad you enjoy it!
Great video, glad things turned our ok,although very expensive, take care , Fair Winds and No Pots
Had to laugh at the circle left in the moss by the drone and your reaction to the dog at the lock.
Best office in the whole world.
Kudo's Tim you got it done 🍾. people do not realize what fatigue and exhaustion can do to amplify a bad situation
Wow Tim! What a change from the late night/early morning live streams. So happy to have our Tim back and overjoyed that, although pricey, you were able to come out of it all relatively unscathed. Tim glad to see all is well and you are back to your old self!
Damn three crab pots that has got to be a record!!! Glad you got free
I have not viewed anyone sailing to the mississippi, that be awsome
The great loop is most interesting when you go in season otherwise it's cold and most things are closed.
So glad you made it out of that situation. New crew sounds exciting can't wait to see the next video.

You handled all that very well! Way to keep your wits about you and remain safe!
Careful in the Chesapeake Bay, we used to see crab pots set in a line crossing the channel!
I think the Mississippi would be awesome
I'd love to see you go down the Mississippi. The Loop is on my bucket list.
Way to go Tim. Back in the saddle and care free!
Your OUTSTANDING!
Mississippi. I have never seen a sailing channel go that way
Sailing Soulianis went from Chicago to the gulf down the Mississippi
@@ndunnan68 Gulf area is a mess. Maybe it'll clear up by then but I would never chance it. Go the SLSW and to Nova Scotia.
Missed you at Ches City, I was at the tiki bar across from you last sunday. I was on last day of vaca, thought you were further south. Labor is the source of all value.
Glad to see you in good spirits Tim, especially after all the bad luck. I’m also glad to hear you will keep sailing once you get your 15 days in. Great episode!
Buy a kicker plate and an outboard. That will prevent such emergencies in the future maybe. You can always cut rope off an outboard.
This is an IOR boat. A kicker plate won’t work
The steel core is inside the crab pot line in order that the line sinks. They don't want it floating on the surface when the tide is low causing an even greater hazard to traffic.
Dang... you are in our area... sorry we missed you! (Oriental, NC)
Your videos are looking very pro now. That green stuff is called duckweed which I actually bought from a pet supply place so my baby fry had a place to hide in. Very cool so once you leave Canada again why not check out Cuba? I am with you in spirit so go where the wind blows you.

New essential tool for a sail boat in that area of the ICW. LARGE bolt cutters ! Better put a float on them or the will drag you down to the bottom!!
I really like your videos.
Such a positive attitude! Love your videos. Easy to listen to.
Quick. Do this today! Get a membership in Tow Boat US or Sea Tow.
For sure, great idea in the ICW! Good call!
Why not dock and fly to Canada? Visit family and fly back to the boat. You'd be a lot closer to the warmth instead of putting hours on that diesel. Nothing wrong with going on the hard and working a few months in Mc D's or Home Depot to build up that kitty. Delos had to do it...
Alan Loves Music! Good idea why not secure boat and head home
The coasties probably got a call and that took priority over your "safety" inspection
I’m fully aware of he issue of crab pots in the ICW for some reason they drop them very close to the main channel at times the buoy can be in the edge of the channel on a rather choppy day the buoy can be very hard to see at a distance and on my boat from the helm I can see directly in front of my boats clipper bow whe. wow! thanks for the info :)
You might as well keep going north while its warm and turn around when it starts getting cold 👍
always a thumbs up yew

So wheres the crab legs. $2000.00
There would be crab on my stove.
Boat US has some coverage in Canada as well to boot
You should do the great loop!
Every one runs to the tropics maybe go north, Greenland few people go to.
Mississippi to the Yucatán
Would it not be easier to keep going up the coast and get to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia? Would prevent a demasting for the canal, and I would have to think cruising Marthas Vineyard would be nice.

Woohoo!!!
Dude, where’d you get that bandana?
Hi, I just bought a 34’ with 6’ draft. This dismal swamp , will it take 6” or too shallow.

Thx guys
You look good, bandanna and shell necklace. you must have cleaned out a tourist shop
Try not to sound like a dick lol
Goodday lad great job just a quick ? What kind of anti foul paint do you have on the bottom of lady k
Tim I know this would probably require you to put lady K on dry dock for the winte if you stayed on the great lakes all summer. Do the Mississippi!
If you do the Mississippi, I live near Hoppies Marina just south of St. Louis, let me know if you stop there, I can drive you around to get supplies.
Head to Chicago and do the loop!
What happened with the Coasties?
Did the Coast Guard ever catch up ? ///
What is icw
So with Sea Tow insurance, it still cost you out of pocket to get towed to dock? I have had Sea Tow for approx 8 years and fortunately never had to use them. Because weather
Lady K Sailing uh huh
Camera NEVER does it justice. But we know what’s up;)
Are you still doing the live stream tonight?
DISMAL SWAMP HAS TOO MUCH SHIT TO GET IN YOUR SEA STRAINER FOR YOUR ENGINE. YOU TOOK A CHANCE OF OVER HEATING WITH ALL THAT CRAP IN THE WATER. BUT YOU MADE IT. CHECK YOUR STRAINER THOUGH FOR JUNK IN IT.
Why not sail a little on Lake Champlain after your 15 days in Canada...
what happened to the girl you had aboard???
Wouldn't your time in the Bahamas reset your visa time in the USA?
Whats up with your new crew member? Is he going to be there for a while? Will he ever speak on camera? Quit smoking!
Think about going through lake Michigan to the Mississippi down to Mobile Alabama, this way you gave completed most of the Great loop
Don't forget to check your intake screens after that swamp soup!
When are you going to be in New York? Any chance you will be in long island sound? Ill come find you and buy you a beer
2000 you should subscribe to Seatow or boat USA a one time fee for 200 is allot less
I wish I were u
No footage of Oriental? Did you stay at the City Dock, and have coffee and a snack at The Bean?
Plz go to Panama I suggested this in I think ep inbetween ep 105 and 110
I think you should show the places you go to instead of just filming on the boat.
I love that the filming in onboard. I choose to watch a sailing channel, not a land travel channel, there’s plenty of those.
Mississippi. I have never seen a sailing channel go that way
