Cannon Ball vs Ballistic Gel in Ultra Slow Mo - The Slow Mo Guys
Pro tip for ballistics gel in hot weather: set it on a piece of glass, cover it with white cloth, then rotate it so the smooth bottom is on the side for filming. Every time you rotate it, it will get smooth on the bottom again.

Thats a good idea!

Cool tip! to the top with you!
Have an upvote, my friend. I'll remember that.
"Don't put you're finger on it".. classic from these two. These guys are hilarious.
Dan's absolutely flawless timing on that countdown!
He was offcamera so it might be overlayed countdown
@@Max_Jacoby Technically yes, but Gav's reaction seems to indicate otherwise.
Honestly not surprising since he was an ammo/explosive expert who served in the british army, in the royal logistic corps.
@@hajkie I doubt he fired many black powder cannons while in the army, though...
@@Steamrick you'd be surprised
the best thing about dan and gav is that they haven't changed a bit even after their UA-cam success
Not even their labcoats!
Why change something that ain't broken
Agreed. I love that.
Yeah, it's probably the UA-cam channel I've watched for the longest, because it's just consistently good!
They really haven't and i love them for it.
Honestly, I think Dan has to be one of the best combination stuntmen/practical effects guys in the business at this point. The way he's able to nail the timing, placement and focus on these shots which take fractions of a second is honestly so impressive. He's always up for doing whatever is required to get the shot. What a guy
He is a British military (forgot which branch) explosives expert. His delivery though, so lovely. Honestly, when I first heard he say it, I thought it was a joke, because he is such a lovely fun puppy that my brain just didn't recognize him as "former military guy" at all... then it sank in it wasn't a bit. What a guy indeed.
He certainly does the tough stunts and experiments! His lab coat is living proof.... there's stains, cuts, rips, tears from almost every session they've recorded! 👍👍🤣🤣
And then there's Gavin having an aneurysm playing Bunnyman with Michael
We all should praise Gavs tremendous abilitys to bring the always convincing right sound into each SlowMo scenery .
Bro I forgot he did the slow mo sound effects
Always amazed at how much punishment the gel can take.
It's ballistic gel. It's made to take a hit.
It's designed to simulate the effects of bullet wounds on animal/human muscle tissue. In other words, it shows how your body would react to getting shot.
@@perniciouspete4986
Except your body won't go back to its original shape with a small hole and a ball stuffed inside. Your guts would probably be strewn all over the place.
@@perniciouspete4986 I find it hard to believe that my body would catch that first ball.
@@robertschwalb4469 well it would only catch it if you have 3ft of solid muscle for it to hit
I LOVE every time you try to reconstruct what happened from the physical debris before watching the video playback. Leads to such awesome moments of realisation.
I cannot wait to see Dan eating the gel, but in Slow Mo.
*Gav prepares the cannon with some ballistic gel inside and tell Dan to open his mouth.
Dan: "What? What do you mean?"
Nope, it went through.
At least e didn't say that he would eat the ball.
40 hours video on second channel, NOW!
“I chew better in slow-motion”
pirates of the caribbean where they fired a bunch of cutlery, but into ballistics gel
Sometimes I forgot he was an actual demolitions expert
I know right? You see them just mating around being a couple of doofuses and you forget that they are both fiendishly competent in their respective field until all of a sudden they do something to remind you
As always, that was awesome. Thanks guys! 🎉
If you could go back in time and show them this video back when they started.
They'd be SHOCKED at how much smarter they sound now. Hahaha.
Yeah, they just make it look so casual but both are incredibly competent in their expertise.
I didn't even know until somewhat recently. I'm sure the knowledge came and went from my brain at some point but with all the firearm stuff lately it's been coming up a lot.
the ball it's not getting sucked back, it's being pushed back by the displaced mass of the gel on the furthest part from the cannon. The gel is returning to its original position (elasticity) and pushing the ball back towards the cannon direction. There is no suction, because the cavitation (low pressure region)- bubbles are gone long before the ball is still actually moving. Great footage I love cannons! :-)
Dan is a total superman, precise shooter, his timing even when it comes to catching flying arrow, and what i like most he is good with explosives. Have a wonderful day guys.
With how fast Dan said he would eat the ballistics gel you know that it was an intrusive thought he had for a LONG time
I _love_ watching ballistic gel footage; it's _so_ fun to watch it bloop around like that.
What I'd _love_ to see is what happens if the gel is clamp down, made immobile somehow.
Glad to hear you are doing better Gav. And I respect you for coming out and saying "I had a problem and I sought help". Tremendous respect to you for confronting your troubles. Keep up the good work and I pray to meet you and Dan one day youre in my state in US
what happened?
Thanks, fun video! A future suggestion - could you do a slomo of a photographic flash strobe(s), like a monolight, at different power levels? At super high speed might be interesting to see how the arc develops.
I love how they have been leaning into Dan's weapons/explosives experience. Thank you for the years of content.
Just when you think the videos can't get any more impressive they keep delivering. What great content!
😂😂 remember the days when they used to just throw a football at Dan's face.
Gav, i also have ptsd. This ad resonates with me, quite a bit. i appreciate you using your platform to reach out to those who might be in need. Much love
I love how gav’s lab coat is SO much cleaner than Dan’s lab coat!! 😂😂😂 it really shows how dan is always the closest one to the experiment when it’s messy 😂😂😂😂
its a running joke now haha
Its a 15 year old joke now lol. go back in the videos and you will always see Gavs coat is FLAWLESS at the start of the video and dans coat is never washed. Its amazing
They both get new coats once in a while. Dan's never lasts long 😂
Some of the coolest videos on UA-cam are from you guys - love it!

I'm not sure if it's betterhealth or a different service but I remember hearing one of these mental health type services had some very questionable phone staff to say the least (one comment I remember seeing a while ago mentioning that the one they got connected to sounded like they were annoyed at the call and in a rush to hang up)
Gel vs everything! You always nail the sound effects so well Gav!
YESSS IVE BEEN BEGGING FOR THIS FROM EVERYONE TO SHOOT SOME BALLISTIC GEL WITH A CANNON
These are always so interesting! Ballistics gel is such a strange material and it's always amazing to see experiments done with it.
Now consider that it is a flesh analogue, and consider that is rather close to what the projectile would do to a person's flesh (sans interactions with bones and other tissues). Have a good weekend.
Would love to see some videos with Adam Savage. I bet there's quite a bit he'd be interested in seeing in slow mo, and his enthusiasm and energy is always top
Dang I literally just said that then saw your comment. Adam Savage is the absolute perfect person to be a guest on this channel.
Please make this happen
I vote these two become the new Mythbusters. Imagine the amazing nonesense they could do with a bigger budget and a team.
Omg i need a slomo guys × tested collab, stat
I'm super down for this idea.
I can't describe the feeling of happiness in my heart when I see that you upload 😂

I love the way you guys hypothesize before shooting, then again before reviewing the slomo, and then revisiting your hypothesis after reviewing all the data. really enjoyable process to see

Can't believe you guys are still doing good stuff after so many years without losing inspiration. Do you still take suggestions? Watching the gel's reaction to the entering ball, it made me think of meteor impacts on earth. Could you use that same canon and shoot it downwards into dirt from a certain height to simulate an impact crater?
That’s a GREAT suggestion.
Crater, please.
crater crater crater.
please.
In what? Dense mud? Soft clay... amazing. But even rocky sand (like where they are) would be intense.
The ball will fall out of the canon.
@@Sudikinoko Hahaha! That’s true, but they could use wadding like the old days, and in front of the cannonball. But it’s a good point...

what did i mess? i hope he'll be ok
@@crazialex Some other comments go into more detail about it, but simply put, he was the victim of an armed home invasion a few years back.
@@crazialex In 2018, Gavin Free and his partner Meg Turney experienced a traumatic incident at their home. On January 26, 2018, an armed individual, described as an obsessed fan of Meg Turney, broke into their residence in Austin, Texas. The intruder was armed with a handgun and fired a shot while Free and Turney hid in a closet, immediately contacting the authorities for help.
Law enforcement responded to the scene, and the situation escalated into a confrontation between the intruder and the police officers in the driveway of the couple's home. An exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in the intruder being fatally shot by one of the officers. The individual had traveled for approximately 11 hours from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Austin, apparently motivated by resentment towards Gavin Free's fame and his relationship with Meg Turney.
I loved this video. I want to add that the part where they guess what happened before watching the footage is my favorite thing ever. Please keep doing that.
Sometimes I forgot he was an actual demolitions expert. Gel vs everything! You always nail the sound effects so well Gav!.
First off, it's good to hear somebody talking about mental health. I'm sorry to hear of Gav's traumatic event. I'm glad he's doing better and continuing to get the support needed.
Secondly, great content, entertaining, and interesting as always.
Third, I want a full-length video of Dan eating that block of ballistic gel. Sort of like a Bruce Bogtrotter cake scene.
What was the traumatic event?
In 2018 there was a crazed/obsessed "fan" of Meg's that broke into Gav and Meg's house with a firearm. The police came, and after a shootout, killed the crazed fan in the driveway @@Shaurya_Pant
@@Shaurya_Pant home invasion
@@Shaurya_Pantit was in the news. If you type up "gavin free" and then probably "police" or some such there should be an article. Bad stuff :(
The audio compliments the slomo perfectly. I love the thumps and “jiggling” noises to go with the carnage.
5:04, never heard about that incident but after looking into it and knowing why he did it(allegedly), the fact that you still do what you do gives me nothing but the highest respect for you. Rock on Gav, and stay safe.
What happened?
@@RDeathmarkStalker, home invasion, victim hide, stalker out, is an awful way to explain it but I think you got the idea
In broad terms, home invasion: some obsessive fan broke into his home with a shotgun (he shot a glass door to get in). Gav managed to hide, called 911. Cops showed up and shot the guy.
ohh god, sorry to hear that
Wow. Did not know that. The down side of having success in the public eye. You never know.
It's very cool how we can see the ultra-fast pressure on the second shot wave that goes throughout the gel in a split moment when the ball hits it. If you look closer, you can see small bubbles formed inside... Just awesome footage!
Still one of the best UA-cam channels around after all these years. Amazing footage as always.
It's always reassuring watching a moving vehicle in the background as we're waiting for a cannon to go off. Top notch, guys.
Bet they knew the range of the road was safe, but yeah, I thought the same thing. I wondered if it was going to photobomb the footage, haha!
Slow mo guys is a forever resource. It could never dry up. Amazing videos every time. Infinite more things to see in slow no. Love it
Jesus Gav, I had never heard of the trauma you and Meg had gone through back in 2018. I usually don't listen to adverts, but it's certainly genuine for you to use this experience as a way to talk about it and I may actually look into betterhelp myself, it can never hurt talking to somebody. That all said, it's awful something so terrible happened to someone so funny and entertaining. We don't deserve you Gav, and thank you for continuing your content creation journey.
Great video, but I actually wanted to comment on your sponsor message.
When I went through a traumatic event back in the mid-90s, I wasn't quite so fortunate when it came to aftercare. I failed to avail myself of the resources that were available at the time to address my PTSD. I chose a far more self-destructive form of coping (the self-medicating kind) which led me down a very dark road. I've emerged from that highway through the Wastelands (using a similar sort of resource as your sponsor) and I'm so grateful to know that you're doing well. Just keep on keeping on, my friend, and best of luck to you.
Gavin I loved the "bloop" sound you added when it went it and the cavity collapses! So satisfying
Still not over the joy of having these two back together after the dark days of Covid. Thanks for another great video!
I swear, every single video from these two is just an absolute stunning marvel. I went in this expecting sobering cool...I left with my mind a little bit blown at just how awesome it actually was. I can see why cannon balls are so freaking destructive now. They don't penetrate, but they absolutely destroyed the entire chunk of gel. That cavitation would eviscerate a human, with all your insides completely crushed
Once again I am fascinated, hypnotized, and ecstatic over things I have literally never seen before. Great work guys!
Came for the slowmo, left with much more respect for Mr. Free. There's a terrible stigma around men's mental health, and talking to the audience about it can't be easy. 💜
Slow motion is one of the greatest information providers ever! Seeing so much happen in an amount of time so insignificant to our perception is amazing! I love this stuff! Really appreciate you guys! 🤙
First time I've ever heard Gav mention what happened to him and Meg - well done for getting the help you needed.
just incredible guys. These past 4 or 5 episodes have just been amazing/
One thing this channel has taught me over the years is comprehension, observation, and wisdom is (generally) inversely proportional to speed. Makes you wonder, about life in general, just what else am I missing?
The ballistic gel videos are some of my favorite to watch. This one and especially the last one were AWESOME! Please do more!
It has been resolved in my mind that the two of you have the greatest job in the world. Thanks for posting these videos.
Completely forgot about your home invasion Gavin. No one should feel unsafe in their own home. I hope you're doing better, PTSD is one hell of a beast. ❤
Seeing that burning powder fly past the gel block was mental !!
First you see all the black un burnt powder flying by then you see the glowing red hot powder fly by like tracers . Amazing video gents. Truly amazing
what a cool way to visualize collision theory and scattering angles using the path in the ballistic gel!
That was some seriously amazing footage. The in-gel collision was a bit of wonderful serendipity. Like skilled bakers at this point, "Just left it in, turned out great!"
3:05 For those of you who are unaware, the "T-1000" is a fictional robot from _Terminator 2,_ which was popular film back in the late 20th century. The robot was shape-shifting and made of liquid metal. When shot, the impact area rippled and reformed, with the liquid metal healing and reshaping itself almost instantly.
I appreciate Dan's mention of the Kentucky Effect. 🤓
6:37 shout out to Dan PERFECTLY calling the detonation
From the displayed velocity and the typical weight of billiard balls, I calculated that the ball had 1623 ft/lbs of energy (about the muzzle energy of a 7.62-39 rifle round) when it made contact with the gel. Great slo-mo footage as always, guys 👍.
So cool how the gel held the first ball in place after it shattered. That would absolutely make a kickass lamp. Hose the dirt off and maybe a light layer of uv resin? (I don't actually know what ballistic gel is made of. If it melts that easy, it might not be good to spray water on it)
Might be my favourite ballistics slo-mo. The moment dan said "we could measure the difference between the two" I had mythbuster flashbacks!
Also really glad to see Gav speaking for Mental Health, so difficult but so important. Therapy isn't like what a lot of people imagine and it can be such a vital help for so many people.
Two friends, one that became a demolitions expert, the other a cinematographer with a proficiency in slow-motion captures.
Perfection.
Creativity is in your veins, or ballistic gel. Such thorough imagination and intuitive joy to find out the physics!
The Slow Mo Guys always showing me something I didn't know I really wanted to see!!
When the first ball got pulled back into its eventual resting place, I was most amazed at how tiny the pressure canal got and that it didn't rip when it became that tiny, with such a comparatively massive mass at the other end, having to be dragged through said tiny channel.
Really cool to see, also when the first ball got literally slammed into the table and deformed so beautifully, great footage, love to get more like it!
This is the same pattern discovered by Dr. Martin Fackler of the Wound Ballistics Laboratory at the Letterman Army Institute of Research, published in his paper "Bullet Fragmentation: A Major Cause of Tissue Disruption" published in the Journal of Trauma. The temporary wound cavity caused by the passage of a projectile through tissue can be significant, but the permanent wound cavity is considerably smaller; it is when the projectile fragments or strikes a bone and spalls off fragments that you get large amounts of trauma.
I love how these guys have known each other for YEARS, yet it always seems like it's their 2nd time hanging out lmao it's so weird
Some math:
220mph/30g = 7.33 mph/g
360mph/55g = 6.54 mph/g
Adding 25g of powder decreased the mph/g by 0.79 suggesting that, while more powder increases velocity, it does so at the expense of efficiency.
Guys it's a jolly good day when the slow Mo guys post
FACTS!
Ohh... I always love when their video's notification comes but now I'm kinda sad... I have been waiting for 1 second to one hour part 3 for over 3 months and they still haven't uploaded yet😢

betterhelp has become the raycon of YT
You should add colour to the ballistic gel to see how it compresses. Maybe inject ink lines to make a three dimensional grid. It should show how the gel warps around the projectile and the point when enough energy is lost that the gel no longer tears and starts compressing
one of your best videos and almost totally by accident, you were rewarded for all the intelligent prep that went into this
Not only do you have great ideas for videos but your footage is just unbelievable
Suggestion/idea for the Slow-Mo guys: Exploding glow-sticks!
Materials - Mass quantities of glow-stick liquids. Usually dibutyl phthalate is on the outside and hydrogen peroxide is on the inside.
Process - Launch said mass quantities of semitoxic chemicals at each other using some sort of water/liquid cannon thing, in the dark. Optional use of combined colors. Be sure to use proper environmental protocol to make sure no innocent earthworms or bacteria in the area are poisoned. Most importantly - film, Slow-Mo style!
My whole family loves your channel, and this video in particular was SO COOL. Keep it up!
They blowtorched the ballistics gel to make it look nicer on camera. I hope this isn't taken the wrong way, but these guys have perfected taking a silly internet idea ("shoot a billiard ball with a cannon") and turn it into something of exceptional quality - and it's partly due to the attention paid to details that someone like myself would never notice.
I love the Britishness retained with Gav and Dan. “Squeaky bum time”, “wallop”.
It would be interesting to see a cross-polarization image of the first impact. Seen the stress in the gel when stop bounce back.
Sound designer did a great job with that ball collision sound
True - that sound designer is Gav himself.
In this fast paced world, you two made it slow for us
Fantastic comment.
This was much more interesting than it had any right to be imo. It's just 2 balls, 1 ballistic gel, and 2 guys with 1 phantom. But especially that second shot had just so much to say about what was going on, and the slow-motion explained in great detail exactly what had happened in the blink of an eye.
I also love how that second ball just barely made its way out of there, yet despite it looking like it was standing still in the video, a piece of it still shot off some distance away.
What happened to Gavin in 2018 that caused him trauma? I hope he's recovering alright. Kudos to him for being open about it -- that's not easy.
