    I have to say I was quite shocked to see on Goodreads that you DNFed The Memory of Babel, and while I can understand your reasons for it being problematic word choices, I, too, am pretty certain that it must have to do with the English translation. I personally read the whole series in German and thought it a very good translation (especially compared to some others I've read before). I found it to be a really smooth and pleasant reading experience and flew through all the books almost faster than I could purchase them. And particularly the third and fourth volumes (which, in my opinion, are very different from the first two) made me completely fall in love with the series.
    I really hope you get the chance to read another (better) translation one day.

    I'm so sorry to hear that you couldn't finish The Memory of Babel. It's definitely not the strongest in the series but I really liked it by the end. I just can't wait for the fourth book, I have so many questions (and Ophelie and Thorns are just the cutest cinnamon rolls). Based on your review, I'm glad that I didn't wait for the English version and that I decided to read it in my mother tongue earlier this year. I really hope that you'll decide to continue the series some day!

    The fact that you DNFed The Memory of Babel is pretty shocking. I only picked up the series because of you and actually I just finished the book last night. I loved it and am honestly trying to think about why you didn’t. I had a ARC, so I don’t know if something changed between that and the finished copy. Was it something regarding Ophelia’s character or was it the world-building? I’m just honestly curious.

    So sad you dnf The memory of Babel, I loved it, especially the second half when it really picks up.
    I think the slurs or inappropriate language used to describe people are not “approved” or endorsed by the narrator, they are described by the characters as being spiteful and also I think the author used those terms as a way of stating the hurtful, cold and skewed society of the arcs.
    But that’s just the way I saw it and felt, different ways of interpreting a book I guess. If you weren’t having a good and comfortable reading experience , it’s totally understandable that you dnf

    I just finished How Much of These Hills Is Gold (C Pam Zhang), and it absolutely D E S T R O Y E D me. It was SO good. For a parallel universe/alternate lives adventure, I highly recommend Trilogía Victoriana (Félix J. Palma). The books are huge and follow a lot of different characters around, but the main idea is that H.G. Wells has to deal with time travel and universe-jumping. He also meets other Victorian authors, like Bram Stoker and Arthur Conan Doyle. It's great. ❤️

    I’m struggling with the language in The Memory of Babel atm, my guess is that they used a similar word in French because it’s the remit of translators to be accurate in their translations.
    Makes me wonder if either author or translator understood the impact of the language in the book and the taboos they’re associated with in English.
    It’s especially hard because I’m part of one of the groups that the R-slur is used against.
    But I can’t say I was surprised to see it, given the description of fat people in the first two books was atrocious- horrible words used, only “bad” characters were fat aside from one, and their fatness was described in negative ways every single time they were on page. I’ve kept going so far since the premise is so interesting, but we shall see how I go with book 3.

      I also feel like political correctness and awareness aren't really a thing in France, at least nowhere near to the extent that they are in the UK or US. Like I've tried to find French (as in of the country, not just the language) literature about being a PoC in France and it's surprisingly difficult to find; if it exists, it's not being publicised to the same degree as books like The Hate U Give or Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race. Granted, I'm not French and I don't live in France, but these are my observations as someone studying French at uni. But yeah the lack of political correctness and awareness is one of the things I struggle w/ the most re: the culture.

    • @Amyduckie
      @Amyduckie 4 роки тому

      어리석은 바보 thank you so much for your insight. I have heard that French culture is quite different and it makes me wonder if francophone Belgians (like the author) are the same. I can try to overlook it if I understand better the cultural differences between my culture (I’m Australian) and francophone cultures. And I think it would be not necessarily wrong for me not to keep the differences in mind, but maybe potentially unfair.

    • @mariealhinho7283
      @mariealhinho7283 4 роки тому +2

      I was wondering what Reagan was refering to, because as a French person I've read the whole tetralogy in French and didn't notice the slurs... I myself have been called the r-slur, so maybe I'm wrong but I feel like I would have noticed it if it were present in the French original version. I also think, having met with the author, that Christelle Dabos herself may have been called that in her life and tries to convey the absolute opposite message (opposite to insulting neuroatypical people, I mean). I cannot emphasize enough that the translators have NO obligation to accuracy in their work, which is sad I know. Maybe they chose a word that was "accurate" giving the context of the book, which takes place in an fantasy version of the edwardian era, a time when atypicals would be badly called and treated. Also, if you're yourselves sensible to the subject, I advise you to be careful with the 4th book, which takes place in an asylum...

    • @emilie_b5346
      @emilie_b5346 4 роки тому +1

      @@Amyduckie Hello, i have read the series in French and I am a francophone Belgian. I am genuinely intrigued to know what word choice you did find problematic. I do pay a lot of attention to that when I am reading and i didn't find anything wrong in the original version. Yet I might have no seen it. Lots of my friends who I consider (I don't know how to say:) aware about different kinds of issues and who are very clever in words (language studies, etc) have read this book and never one of them
      have though it was problematic as well.
      Also, the author was born in France. I don't know when she moved to Belgium but i think it's fair to presume that both French and Belgian culture have had an impact on her.
      I do think culture is very different from the US(/UK). But it's kind of hard to talk about it since i can only talk based on my experience and not on objective facts. And I don't know much about the publishing here since it's so small tbh. The book market is mostly made of american/english books.

    I was similarly disappointed with the memory of Babel. The wording was definitely a strange/insensitive choice, but I also had issue with the story itself. The first two books had so many different settings, plot redirecting events, mysteries, and opportunities for character development, but this was sooooooo monotonous. I did made it all the way through, and the last 10% was definitely by far the best, so here's hoping the 4th book turns it back around.

    What problematic word choice? I just want to know bc I’ve thought about picking up this series but don’t want to waste my time if book 3 is problematic

      For me, there were two main choices that bothered me. First, a young girl that can’t walk or speak is referred to as retarded. This is seen as a negative by the main characters, but I do wish Dabos had picked a different word. Secondly, an Asian woman is described as having an oriental doll face and is compared to a porcelain doll. This one really bothered me especially since this was done by the main character. Now, most of this was in the first half and I really enjoyed the second half, but I understand if those are deal breakers for you.

      @@samthebest48 I dont remember Dabos using the word retarded in the original french text, she used the word "reversed" for all the characters with the peculiar affliction (trying to keep this spoiler free), i think i indeed remember the porcelain doll thing being in there tho :/

    I didn’t love Ship of Magic. I preferred the Farseer Trilogy but I’m definitely continuing the series. I think I just don’t like books about boats/ pirates

    I watched into my mom's room while she was reading Becoming and she was openly spbbing hard enough that I thought someone had died. So it's effective, apparently.

    The "weird language choices" in Dabos' books is very much a Dabos thing. I'm French so the serie is quite big here, and I read everything to try and understand the hype. I hated every book, and her so very weird and very annoying language choices drove me nuts.

      @@ainasubirats9606 not in English, as I read them in French. Old words in otherwise very modern prose, words used to have some sort of stylistic effect but the meaning of the words don't work well within the sentence. I'd read the same sentences several times wondering why on earth she chose to write like this, because it was really offputting, it pulls you out of the story, and you're wondering what the f she's trying to say.

      @@tree_hugger6921 je ne peux pas comparer à la traduction anglaise, mais les choix stylistiques étranges de l'autrice sont bien présents dans la version française.
      Je me souviens d'une phrase qui m'avait vraiment laissée perplexe, quelque chose comme "Ophélie coula un pull"... ce qui ne veut rien dire du tout. C'est un choix censé donner du style, une atmosphère... qui ne marche, pour moi, vraiment pas. Couler un pull, franchement.

Elle utilise le mot "inversé" beaucoup alors peut être que c'est un couac de traduction :/
