In training etiquette against a superior fighter you usually go light because it comes across as rude and egotistical to try your best against someone who clearly is better than you. It only means they will have to match your energy which gains nothing for both parties as the superior guy would easily demolish the other but if he does not then he risks being embarrassed in front of everyone.
