    Thank you for the advice in this video!
    Here are some tips for critical-thinking:
    1. Be tolerant
    2. Be open-minded
    3. Respect others
    4. Consider your emotions and the emotions of others "not hindering, but to help you and enhance".
    5. Ask questions
    6. Be skeptical
    7. Think things through

    Great video, especially given today's climate where people just "follow" ideas blindly and don't stop to ask "why?"
    Sadly common sense is not so common and there's nothing wrong with following someone or ideal, etc., but people should always be asking "does this make sense?"
    IMO, critical thinking should be a required class in high school. I took a class (and a few philosophy courses) in university and they helped change my outlook on life, but also how to "think". Not saying I'm perfect, it's a life long journey on self improvement!

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  3 роки тому +3

      Totally agree that critical thinking needs to be in high schools. Sadly, they seem to be closing or shrinking philosophy departments in universities, which means even less critical thinking will wind up in schools overall.
      I was very blessed to not only take logic as an undergrad, but later teach it as part of a critical thinking course for four years as a professor. Students at the university level were not much equipped for it, sadly, but we did our best and had fun.
      Critical thinking is not without its issues, however. There's sadly a lot of dogma in it and many don't dig deep enough into aspects like paraconsistency... that, or they learn a few fallacies and start preaching them incompletely. For example, I hear often the "slippery slope fallacy" accusation from people who seem unaware that there are at least six types of this particular fallacy.
      In any case, I'm not sure yet it will become a dedicated focus of the channel, but there is a lot about it on the blog so far that can be turned into videos if there's enough interest.
      Thanks as ever for your posts and I look forward to the next one! :-)

    • @SilverSamurai12
      @SilverSamurai12 3 роки тому +1

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM I never had considered the associated dogma with "slippery slopes", but despite that, I think critical thinking is still important so that one can be aware such a thing exists.
      Thanks though, it's given me something new and a different perspective to ponder. :)
      Although I work in a finance related field and have a bit of a finance background (went to college for marketing, but did arts/humanities in university), I'm often shocked that while ethics is generally part of most business programs (as it should be) critical thinking and/or philosophy isn't.
      Who knows, maybe some of today's greed could be reigned in with some simple education, however, I do admit it's likely wishful thinking.
      When I was working in hospitality, you get to interact with many different types of people. We'd often joke that common sense is not so common.
      Oh the wacky guest stories that would make you shake your head and wonder how that individual managed to get dressed and leave the house that day... but I digress...

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  3 роки тому +1

      It's a complicated issue on the one hand, not so complex on the other.
      For example, speaking of finances, James Doty talks about how people on Wall Street use meditation techniques to make them more objective and less emotionally involved in mental signals such as greed. I don't know if this is true, but it makes sense that people would do this and that it would work because meditation can lead to coldness and an ability to more easily forsake one's moral compass.
      I don't know if you are engaged in wishful thinking or not, but I think the ancient traditions like Advaita Vedanta pretty much nailed the combination of meditation and critical thinking with a moral compass many thousands of years ago.
      As long as new people are being born and old people are either changing or dying, the world is going to be just what it is and the logical conclusion is to practice being the best you can be with as little concern for the outcome as possible - because there's zero evidence that things ever turn out the way one wishes or plans.
      In the great pinball machine of life, we can certainly admire some educational reformers who are at work at some of these issues. But it's always experimental and if there is one thing that seems to remain constant, it's human nature. Can it be reigned in? Perhaps locally, and perhaps only for a time at that.
      For those of us for whom common sense is common (at least some of the time), gratitude at the good fortune to be in such a state is warranted... but not demanded. So it goes.

    I would argue willpower can work, but it just needs to be exercised first. One way to do this is to practice control or inhibition and relaxing or disinhibition. Do this enough and your willpower will get better

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  2 місяці тому +1

      This is a good intuition, but the problem of will has at least two components:
      1) Someone has to be lucky enough to come across your message
      2) Someone has to be lucky enough to have the disposition to put what you're saying into action
      Given that luck takes so much of the pie, I remain on the mathematical side of demonstrating that willpower doesn't really work in the way we say it does. I've only listed to possible issues, but there are more.

    • @stephena1196

      Relying on willpower doesn't work that well, everything just becomes a test of wills. There will be times when one is not the one in control, not the powerful one, but still must still progress through some situation.

    Hey Anthony,
    I found you videos very helpful, especially with studying for exams! One thing i wanted to tell you however, is that it doesn't matter how much knowledge a person achieves or how far he can go with his brain, if you're 80 years old you might not even remember your best friends name and might even be dead already. I hope you realize this and look out for things that actually last. There is a GOD and he loves all of us, we can see HIM in the beauty and enormous complexity of our brain. It is far greater than a man made computer, however it created itself? That just doesn't make sense critically thought. So GOD bless you, i hope you keep encouraging others to use their brains more often and show them what this gift is able to do, but i also hope you search for more than something that will eventually have to be washed off by tide. ;)

      Thanks for this.
      If you have evidence that there is something “more” than the present moment, and that evidence meets a testable standard, by all means bring it on.
      Otherwise, I humbly submit that all people reading this put their modesty hats on and start paying attention to what is using their critical thinking skills.
      The fact that some people suffer - in their 80s or otherwise - lends no special support to the idea that we should search for something “more.”
      On the contrary, it firmly suggests that critical thinkers should focus more firmly on the fullness of the now. What “more” could possibly be added to the now?
      I would appreciate your deeply considered thoughts on the answer to that question. 🙏

      I'll put some thought into that, but as a first thought, I think the key idea would be this:
      Rational thinking involves the application of reason, which is typically associated with logic. To think logically requires understanding logic.
      Critical thinking would help you think about whether or not logical thinking is actually called for in a particular situation. You might need to follow your gut, for example.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  10 місяців тому +1

      Some areas of philosophy need to allow for fantastical thinking in order to explore possible worlds.
      Ontology in particular needs to explore "what what" the "is is."
      There's a video coming out on this channel soon that gets deeper into this, but for now, philosophy is sometimes exploratory in ways that are not "critical." It contains the word "love" in it for too reasons: the love of wisdom, but also the wisdom of love. Sometimes it is wise not to be critical.

    Ok can you please list out the books you stated? I want to find them. Please share more .

      Thanks for your post, Philip.
      Wouldn't it benefit your memory and learning experience to list them out yourself? The Magnetic Memory Method Community is all about evading learned helplessness so please take every opportunity to enrich yourself by helping yourself.
      It's when people do that, that I feel encouraged to release more content like this.
      Does this way of looking at self empowerment make sense to you?
      P.S.
      For those who look in the video description, there's a link to the podcast version where all the books are listed. Please do help yourself. :-)

    But then I'll allow getting manipulated because it's for a good cause 🤣

      @@petermartin1954 Since we're talking about critical thinking, who is the "they"? I don't disagree that critical thinking has been taught in schools - I taught a fourth year course at university and took logic myself during my undergrad.
      But I don't think it was ever universally taught and would love to pool some specific examples of what was taught, where and when. Any specifics you can share would be useful in constructing new initiatives for the future.

    . If its true that only 1 percent think critically all the professionals we use daily lawyers accountants doctors how can they come up with the best solutions if the arent critical thinkers.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM

      Examples of their "best solutions"? A huge percentage of these groups make mistakes each and every day precisely because they fail to think critically. The law itself is characterized by prosecution vs. defense, with the appeals process allowing for another round with the same combinatorial split in which many other factors than critical thinking determine outcomes.
