  • From ABC's Lost: Jacob explains the island to newcomer Richard. The island is the cork keeping the evil from reaching the rest of the world. Very nice imagery and a very important scene.

      Yeah, that was kinda stupid.
Maybe the thing is that Jacob thought that MiB would try to corrupt every candidate so Jacob has to surrender at one time.
But Richard told him this, and Jacob realized that maybe at some point MiB instead of corrupting and killing candidates would end up using them to kill Jacob, find an exploit in the rules, that he end up doing.

Jacob's philosophy is perfectly in line with the themes the show has explored since S1.
I love how this major character and his whole philosophy explains so much of the major themes explored through all our characters, how it turns out that ultimately in the end the show's mythology is intrinsically tied to the simple questions of human nature - that just as the writers wanted the show to be about exploring them, they actually created the character of Jacob to represent the key arbitrator at the heart of all these events.
He, as much as the writers, wanted to bring together as many different flawed people, a true representation of human nature, good and bad and all in between, and explore just what they could be capable of when left to their own devices - could they learn to live together and help lift one another up and perhaps even aspire to give themselves to an even higher cause, to think beyond what you see and learn to believe in what you cannot, or would they let their nature and basest instincts of survival let them turn on one another, to instead of learning to give themselves to a higher cause either ignore it, disbelieve it or even worse try to take advantage of that higher power and try claim it for themselves?
Jacob's human experiment of sorts was the perfect way to explain the meandering journey the show took, and it made perfect sense of why he let it take as long as it did, and yes it's true - it really would have meant nothing if he stepped in and told them what to do. He had to let them discover it for themselves, as we all have to in life.
To me it's just so satisfying, and it totally pays off all the episodes spent exploring these characters not just from a character development point of view, but also from a thematic sense as they each through their varying types of storylines were still all unified in the sense that they all were ways in which these central questions could be explored.
    Perfect, perfect writing!

Just like to point out something many missed from this episode - it effectively explains the strange religious like way The Others regarded Jacob - almost like a god. Richard became the first Other following this conversation and he was very religious. Jacob pretty much was a god of sorts to him after this and one whose plan he devoted himself utterly to from that point on. Therefore when the first group of people that came to the island after arrived he guided and intervened, which included passing onto them the religious regard for Jacob, as he began forming them into the society we know from the show. Ab Aeterno is as much an origin of how The Others came into being as it is an explanation of how Richard came to the island. Richard is the core of their society - the constant, always guiding them from his advisory position

Jacob, representing the light and good, is capable of evil deeds himself when he throws his brother in the pit knowing that something really bad will happen to him as a result.

Which means this has to be when Lucifer first held the mark of Cain (aka the keys to Amara's cage), a mark which inevitably corrupted him and was passed to Cain before Lucifer was locked in Hell.
Which means, this island is a gateway to Amara's cage.

You know I also liked the exchange where Richard is asking Jacob to bring back his wife. The way Jacob pauses, implies to me that, he *could* potentially bring back Richard's wife, but knows it would be wrong and maybe not the way Richard wants. Then when Richard asks the second request, to abolish his sins, Jacob says pretty frankly he can't, meaning that, despite all he can do, it's impossible to undo a person's sins. Least that's how I always interpret it

Yeah I believe that too - perhaps he could bring people back in the same way that MIB brings Sayïd back, where he loses all of his emotions. And besides, we find out later in the episode that Isabella is at peace with dying and says that it was her time. This is also implied in "Across The Sea" when Mother tells Jacob and MIB that the light represents Life, Death and Rebirth. So I like your theory very much and believe it to be true, not that it changes the course of the show in any way but it's a nice thing to think about!

Here is how I interpret the core elements of the central story told in LOST:
Mother is the Protector of the Island to whom the Black Smoke obeys originally (basically to eliminate those who are perceived as a dangerous threat to the Island). Things change when she is killed and when Jacob's brother is thrown into the cave. At this moment, the Black Smoke liberates itself from its initial function by absorbing Jacob's brother vital essence and by adopting his identity. From this precise moment, the Balance which existed on the Island is disrupted. The Protector of the Island (Jacob) cannot control the Black Smoke anymore; it's even worse than that: the Black Smoke becomes his enemy with opposite goals (it/he wants to kill Jacob and to leave the Island). This is why Jacob starts to bring new people to the Island: he wants them to find a way to stop the new Black Smoke, as it/he reinforces chaos on the Island.
When Desmond removes the cork and the Light in the Heart of the Island goes out, the extraordinary properties of the Island disappear. The Black Smoke becomes human (unknowingly to itself/himself, its particular form was always connected to the Light). Jack kills him and then restores the Light again. That's how the problem created by Jacob thousands of years ago is resolved. A new cycle begins with Hurley as the Protector of the Island. The Black Smoke reappears as an impersonal force where it originally belongs: in the Heart of the Island. Balance is reestablished. The Protector of the Island can summon the Black Smoke and use it, but knowing Hurley and his personality (his kindness and intrinsic non-violence) one can presume that he won't do that, as he will try to find more pacific ways to resolve conflict with the potential "threats" to the Island.

After john Locke(smoke monster) was killed by jack, jack went in to heart of the island to plug the hole. If what you say is true that smoke monster is back in heart of the island now after Locke(smoke monster form) died and jack plugged the hole, does that mean that when jack came out, he was smoke monster again?

I would also add, that the Black Smoke is probably just that: Nothing but 'Sound and Smoke', and so it has no power of its own. It is an illusion that represents fear, and so only starts to gain power over people, when they become afraid of it and are starting to try to defend themselves against it. It obscures the light, just like fear obscures the truth.

The Island is this place where all these unique properties exist (electromagnetism, exotic matter) that appear to have inexplicable impact on biological life forms. Some people came to believe in the Island as a divine place that needs to be protected and defended (The Others, Jacob's thru Richard & Dogen people) against those who would seek to manipulate and exploit these properties for their own gain (Charles Widmore, the Dharma Initiative, the people MiB stayed with for 30+ years).
Jacob became one of the Island's early or at perhaps its longest serving protector. The woman, Mother, was a protector of the Island too, and when the people MiB hung with began to get too close to finding, exploiting & tampering with the Source of the Island's unique properties, she knocked MiB severely unconscious and killed all the people and destroyed all their work/progress towards figuring out the Island's source of "power". Jacob threw is brother into the Source which at the time was unprotected by the Cork system that helped prevent direct human contact with the Source. MiB's physical body came into direct contact with that Source there by merging his consciousness with the Island's energy and producing an entity that carried MiB's desire to leave the Island, and his disdain for humanity and resent of Jacob for what he did to both prevent him leaving the Island AND cause the disembodiment of MiB's consciousness and trapping it as a smoke monster.
The removal of the Cork causes the segregation of the Island's electromagnetism and exotic matter thereby extinguishing its unique properties. This in effect turned off the unique properties of the Smoke Monster, allowing Jack & Kate to kill it, and releasing MiB's consciousness from the Island's energy source. As the Island's protector, Jack had a smart part of the Island's source within him, this permitted him to "rekindle" the Island's unique fusion of electromagnetism, water and exotic matter, after he place the Cork back in place.
I should note that Jughead's nuclear energy also released, at first in small doses with the button pushing, and then in an immense amount of radioactive energy when Desmond activates the failsafe. This energy merged with the Island's Source. It gave Desmond immunity to electromagnetism.

I think there was a smoke monster down in the cave all along. It was a battle between light and dark, and the scales were equal (meaning the monster could not escape) since nothing good or bad had entered the cave. But when Jacob threw MiB down there, the scales tipped to the wrong side and the Monster fused with MiB, killing his original body, and leaves the cave (now that there is more darkness than light). after that the Monster/MiB wanted to leave the island, but to do so they had to put out the light. In order to put out the light, they had to kill the protector. But they can't kill Jacob, because mother had made it that way. So they kept trying to get people to kill him and then they would be able to put out the light. And you know the rest.

This reminds me of when people ask why God allows bad things to happen and doesn't just fix things and make people be good... Jacob kind of has the perfect response for that.
"Because I wanted them to help themselves. To know the difference between right and wrong without me having to tell them. It's all meaningless if I have to force them to do anything."
That's also why there are prophets who speak for the Lord and give us guidance and direction (Richard). It's amazing how much truth is in this show! Probably why I love it so much! It also shows that no one is perfect, we all make mistakes and do bad things, but that doesn't mean that we're bad people and can't be forgiven. GREAT SHOW!

Also think about what the light is, electromagnetic energy, and it's said that inside of humans is the same kind of "light". If there is a dark energy underneath the island similar to the light, perhaps the darkness inside his soul magnetically fused with the darkness.

    _I want my wife back._
He could have asked for anything to this God. But at a heartbeat, without any hesitance, he asks for her. Even Jacob is impressed by this love. How many women inspire this kind of love today.

Far fewer men are even open to feeling and expressing love. And I mean real love, not boyish infatuation or selfish juvenile objectification.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, and you make a good point. I think that Jacob just chose to stay out of the whole war between the Dharma folk and the Hostels, because he wanted them to make peace on their own. Once Richard had created a community of people, he realized that it wouldn't make sense for him to be the leader, since he can't die. I guess that's why he came up with a system to recruit a leader. The Dharma purge though, was Widmore's decision.

Richard and Jacob are 2 of the greatest characters. No other show has so many brilliant fucking characters other than Lost. So many, and they're all so amazing. Except Sawyer, fuck Sawyer. I'll never like that guy. Waaaaa, my parents died, I want everyone to hate me, I take my baggage out on everyone else, waaaaa.

I always dreamed of a LOST movie or spin off series (Netflix?) set entirely in the "ancient times" as shown here and in Across the Sea. Fuck that would be interesting.

I love that Jacob is ultimately finite and when he dies and a new protector is chosen, they can do things differently. Better. I would have loved to see more of Hurley's tenure.
