Wow, if its true that the sensor is a mouse sensor that would be awesome. Maybe thats what the top and bottom flat “circles” are for sliding, just like how mouses have the flat bottom half circle shape for sliding.
The stick girth has me feeling optimistic about the resistance functionality, oh boy! The IR is probably versatile but can no way be used as a mouse without an accessory, to avoid carpal tunnel. IR pointing with wrist strap mirror for Wii-type game operation is most likely the primary reason it's there imo.
I wanted to add to my earlier comment about the extra button not being the disengage button but a new input, but I am not about to scroll till I find it. I am not a hardware designer, but I have played with a lot of magnets and I do have basic engineering knowledge. These magnets would need to be reasonably powerful, right? I would expect them to be in order to hold the joycons on. Think of it. This is a device that you will be playing while gripping it solely by the joycons. If they come loose, the Switch 2 is falling. This is also a device you might toss in your bag, and it would be crappy design if the joycons come off inside. So we are talking about powerful magnets. So what exactly would that single button do? Yes, single button. We know there is at least a top and bottom magnet from all the links. How exactly would that button press move both magnets? And how would it be able to move those magnets enough that they aren’t still attracting the Switch 2’s magnets? If the magnets are weak enough that they can be disengaged by moving them slightly, then they are weak enough that you can just pull them off. And this system would be solely on the joycons-where the button is-which don’t have a lot of internal real estate for a whole moving lever that has magnets attached. They need to strike a balance between attraction strength and being able to be pulled off. I’m not saying I’m right about this, I’m just trying to puzzle through how it could work.
Pretty sure the trigger type button on the back on the joycons have to be to release the magnets. It makes the most sense and it’s exactly where the old tiny button was to release and slide the joycons off. If there is no type of release button at all then that would blow my mind because like you said they wouldn’t be very good with just magnets alone, children would struggle to get them out if they wet too strong and that would defeat the purpose entirely, and if too weak then a lot of switches will get broke and that’s not something Nintendo would put out there. They are a family directed company, meaning what they make is very family friendly of all ages. The c button on the other hand couldn’t be for that, that’s something different.
@carriejohnson4922 what do you mean "release the magnets" though? The button is on the joycon, so it will only affect those magnets. There isn't a lot of room in a joycon, so how do you "release" both the top and bottom joycon magnet when there is only a top button? You can't just turn magnets off. Unless they are electro magnets and those require a pretty to strong current. I guess there could be a lever inside that slides a non magnetic bar across the internal magnets, breaking their attraction... But what happens if you accidently press that button while gaming. It's much bigger now, and your middle finger will naturally rest against it. The whole reason the current release button is small and awkward to press is so that you don't accidentally press it.
@@carriejohnson4922 Looks like you’re right and that it does somehow release the magnets. This is some pretty tight engineering, too. I wonder if they might serve as extra input buttons as well once they are disconnected? Third party controller leaks showed that there were extra input buttons on the back. Maybe that’s a pro controller feature, though.
Hopefully. They are fully aware that Japanese hands are smaller than American's typically. I am sure, however, knowing Nintendo, will want to make a pretty buck off the accessories that may be needed for that. lol
I believe this supposed "laser thing" on the side is the new lag-free data transmission method used when the Joy-Cons are connected to the Switch. To me, it clearly resembles optical sensors, similar to those in a Toslink cable. This would imply a transmission speed close to the speed of light.
I personally dont think it is a mouse feature. This would mean nintendo expects everyone to be playing at a desk or table with a flat surface, most people will be palying in spots that dont have those flat surfaces to use the mouse on. It would be an extremely niche feature that barely gets used if it does end up being a mouse sort of thing.
The "mouse" style could also be used as a possible 1 monitor solution for DS/WiiU games, since you can keep both the normal button access and the "touch" (through mouse positioning) portion of it. 🤔 It certainly isn't optimal, but it could be viable for playing those games when the switch is recharging, for example.
Now the C button makes perfect sense. Maybe to put the right Joy-Con in "Cursor Mode", where it is possible to use the right Joy-Con (and only the right one apparently, since there is no C button on the left Joy-Con) as a mouse. In addition, by attaching the strap to the side, it could reflect this laser to the top of the controller, turning it into a kind of "Wiimote". It would be perfect for pointing in shooting games, such as Call of Duty and MP4 Beyond.
Many people are clamoring for it. Market saturation has hit the Switch 1 years ago. I think the hype will be fine, considering they always have a few aces up their sleeves.
@ I don’t care how “curved” they are. They are almost 1/4 of an inch thick. If this is the intended way to use them it will be a wrist and hand pain nightmare.
If they have a warning on the screen start up screen, like the flashing lights warning for seizures and joycon strap warnings, by default, there would be no basis for a lawsuit
I hope it's a camera and laser for both mouse like controls and camera captures for games like Mario Kart GP & GP2 or a Pokémon where take pic of Pokémon in the wild on your TV screen or maybe even Augmented Reality games
The camera gimmick phase has passed though. Everyone's phone can take pictures. No way are they going to take up resources and space for that. I believe that it's to help with NSO/Chat/Mouse functions for a PC style gaming (BG3 or the likes). I think that the Switch 2's successor might delve into VR and AR though.
I think it's just at a slightly different angle. Plus, the Switch 2 joycon is larger, so the button might actually be farther away seeming because it technically could be.
In my honest opinion it doesn't make a lot sense to put an optical sensor on the joycon. They should just add native support mouse and keyboard with bluetooth. They could even sale their own branded keyboards and mice. They aren't adding an accessible web browser because that has been security vulnerability on literally every console that has one.
This would be a versatile function. It would open up ease of use for so many games and game types. Now all we are missing is a good way to play light gun games and a better vr experience on their systems. I hope they someday make a system/ controller that can basically do it all..... and then I hope somebody makes it comfortable because nintendo hasn't priorized that.
The pop-up colors on black joycons are the only way to move forward with the Switch 2. It is the only way to visually distinguish between Switch 1 and Switch 2 controllers since their design is nearly identical and hardly distinguishable to the average consumer. Interesting ideas; looking forward to the reveal soon.
I don’t think this is a mouse sensor. Most players play in docked and handheld mode. The only way a mouse-like feature would work is on a flat surface like a desk. At that point, players could just use an actual mouse that would be more comfortable to hold. It’d be an underutilized gimmick since most people dont wanna sit at a desk to game, i mean thats the whole point in buying a console over a pc. Instead, the Switch 2 should focus on better motion and pointer tracking. With Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move gone, Nintendo dominates motion gaming. Doubling down on that, rather than adding a niche feature, would be the smarter move.
That's not the direction it is headed though. The Switch and Switch 2 are practically about playing your game where ever you might be as the main focus, not purely playing the game swinging the joycon around. The movement gimmick is now basically a "bonus" feature of the system. That being said, I honestly think Nintendo might be working top secretly on AR/VR. It would have to be done differently than a mainline thing.
I genuinely want this to be true. Ever since the Switch came out I’ve been thinking about how awesome it would be to play with a single joycon and mouse.
So theire copying the Legion Go controller basically that you can use in joystick mouse mode using the stand? Isnt it a bit narrow and thin for that purpose in this case, if you use that side you might just tilt over to one side rather easily? I also cant beleive they gonna pair baby blue (left controller) with bright orange (right controller). Any color other than orange would harmonize more with baby blue from a color theory standpoint.
If true, that'd be really cool. But to be honest, the Switch gyro control already "caught up" with PC mouse... gyro is a very capable mouse-like aiming alternative if done right. I've been playing games like, Rogue Company, Paladins and now Overwatch 2 between PC and Switch and I don't feel restrained by using gyro; it feels pretty much like using a mouse.
that would be nuts. would make it so you could port over older pc games like diablo 2 or star craft. plus itll give indy developers an extra option for more types of games.
How many people would be playing, either in docked or hand held, in a way where they would have a surface on which the mouse could work? That seems fairly specific use-case that would heavily limit when a mouse-like usage could be put into practice. It IS 100% a Nintendo-style move that could really open things up, but I'm struggling to understand how this would be a big deal unless I'm the dinosaur still playing games on my couch. The other recent leak (Famiboards, translated from a Chinese forum), did mention that indie devs didn't get joycons with their dev kits and have been using Switch 1 joycons. Having an optical device for a totally revolutionary usage of a gamepad would be a big enough deal to warrant not sending out new joycons to indie devs that are more likely (or at least perceived to be more likely) to be sources of leaks. Then again... it could just be as simple as sending out the minimum required hardware. It also seems kinda weird Nintendo would not want devs to be able to take into account this feature, unless they maybe figure it's a simple back control reworking for indie games that will already be mouse capable (if useful)?
It's always the in-house teams that builds their new games from the ground up using these features first. I think with how paranoid Nintendo is, it wouldn't be surprising they took this route first to ensure their patent/idea didn't get stolen just in case. It would make sense to have several games readied using this feature when they reveal the console.
Remember everyone who thought they so smart crying "just another Switch. No originality. No creativity. No new features. No gimmicks. Lazy Nintendo"? Every time. Never think you know everything, and never count Nintendo out to do something unexpected.
In my opinion, this image is fake because: 1) theres no screws (actually only one is visible in all the images shown). 2) 11:55 - where are the Dpad buttons? You can only see one button (probably the →), but we should be able to see at least 3 buttons on the side (↑, ↓ , →). Pretty much like the actual joy con on the right image, where you can see the 3 buttons.
Completely disappointing joycons... Looks about as thin as the first one for the grip area.. And entirely unergonomic. And I suspect the new switch will be even heavier so.. Makes for an overall worse experience.
Thanks for the demonstration of the joycon it was interesting to see it used like a mouse and to use your thumb on the stick and your pointer finger and middle finger to click the top buttons like a mouse you could also use the other joycon as w,a,s,d so basically walk forward with action buttons and mouse around for aiming with other joycon dude that’s awesome what a time to be alive!!!!
Honestly if your theory is correct I think it will be the best and most innovative feature, I think though that could really be a really cool way to play games differently. But to be fair in terms of design it doesn’t look like it made to be sturdy enough to be used as a mouse.so I hope your correct 👍 also great theory truly a great catch
Remember when they talked about creating this new universal type of control with their next generation? I’ll remain skeptical until we actually see a reveal but this might be it. The problem I see is the amount of friction the joycon would have to endure. Anyway, I hope these are not the final colors for joycon because they look awful lol
I think that those nodes on the joycons' top and bottom are the friction pads. It'd be easy to put powerful magnets behind those. Friction pads last forever in my experience.
This is why the "lol-that's-what-you-get-for-waiting-too-long" comments under some of these vodeos are hilariously misguided. Every time we get another leak, we have MORE QUESTIONS than answers. Our anticipation and curiosity GOES UP, NOT DOWN! From Nintendo's point of view, that's probably the best outcome ever!
I love PC gaming but don’t do it cause I prefer consoles. This in handheld form but able to doc would be the absolute pinnacle of perfection when imagining an ideal format for gaming options. Wow Nintendo is just amazing. The only thing left for me is VR. I really love my Quest 3 and if I could trade it for a Nintendo VR I would in a second. Link, Mario, MarioKart, Samus, Splatoon, Smash, 2D Zelda, it would be better than anything out there and Nintendo’s quality is so far beyond any other producer it would just be a dream.

Hoping they show off the switch 2 ether for this week or the week after dk comes out. Hoping for this week
You will be able to use the joycon as a mouse, this will most likely be used to navigate the new E-shop and incorporate in game mechanics. I heard that the new okami game will use this feature for the paintbrush strokes.
Damn how much does Nintendo pay you?
@LikeWhyTF Not enough. There's also a joycon attachment to stabilize it when using it as a mouse, I don't think any pictures have made it online yet.
@@JinglePeeny legend
@@LikeWhyTF Looks like I was right. Hmm.
@@JinglePeeny you’re so right bro you can read rumors and regurgitate and type you should be sooo proud of yourself jingle petty with those skills you’ll easily make 100’s of dollars a year
A cursor option would be so good for city builders, Mario maker, soo many games..
Since the joycons are magnetic they could include magnetic attachments to aid in the slide-ability of the joycon when using it as a mouse
@ yea I’m not sure. That would be pretty cool. Even if it’s just a pro controller feature.
I wonder whether they will include a plastic peripheral for the joycon to clip into in order to thicken the base, and make it more stable?
C IS CURSOR!!! WE MIGHT BE GETTING A BROWSER ON SWITCH 2!
Holy crap....you might be on to something. How would you stop it from always reading mouse input? You’d need a button.
I think it's for all of the NSO functions as well as when you are playing multiplayer online to quick join a lobby or instachat a friend
Omg. It was already intriguing as an idea, then you connected the dots to Metroid Prime 4. Yes please
I still hope the joycons's motioncl control will be as agood as the Wii, but I doubt it.
I think it might be used to immediately access the NSO/chat features.
They will release an accessory to make it work like a mouse
Information wants to get out. The more Nintendo wait on the reveal, the more leaks will happen, til the impact of said reveal is diminished.
Many people are clamoring for it. Market saturation has hit the Switch 1 years ago. I think the hype will be fine, considering they always have a few aces up their sleeves.
Nintendo wants the leaks. Free hype. You have to ask yourself, "will these leaks hurt sales in any way?" The answer is no. That tells you right there.
Makes me wonder if the person who leaked this could be found by Nintendo with the serial number
There’s already a hit out on him
Lmao, Nintendo is probably the ones who directed the "leak"
That mouse idea is great. I hope it's there.
Dude if that is a mouse in a joycon it’s effing brilliant
8:20 Carpal tunnel lawsuit waiting to happen. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that would be.
@slyguy8943 the joy cons are more curved to accommodate this
Hopefully it can be used with Bluetooth mice. It will almost certainly support USB mice, which the current Switch already does.
Not any worse then holding the Switch in handheld mode.
You would need a smooth table to play as mouse controls..
A Nintendo Switch 2 foldable gaming laptop table.
This would be AMAZING
10:43 it’s weird that on the old joycon the face buttons are clearly visible but on the switch 2 you only see one face button
I think that's just because of the angle the photo was taken at. I guess we'll find out pretty soon, either way!
It seems it's because the joycon on the photo is a bit tilted, we can see the back of the joystick too.
That's such a good idea, I wonder how many games would try and use this control method.
All of this for a better version of Roller Coaster Tycoon
Mouse tech would be crazy.
What if the mouse feature gives you a chance to release "Mario Paint"
This JoyCon-as-a-mouse concept really excites me even though I won't be able to afford a Switch 2... :(
Star Fox uses the mouse to control the arwing. They did this with Command with the stylus
I hope you are right about the joycons doubling as a mouse. Total game changer if true.
This is more a super switch and that's what it should have been named.
Naa Switch Advance SP
The joy cons can see each other instead of the using a bar like the wii
The pop-up colors on black joycons are the only way to move forward with the Switch 2. It is the only way to visually distinguish between Switch 1 and Switch 2 controllers since their design is nearly identical and hardly distinguishable to the average consumer. Interesting ideas; looking forward to the reveal soon.
5 year olds force jamming the wrong Switch consoles' joy cons is definitely a stuff of nightmares, lol.
Very interesting theory. I highly doubt it, but if anyone was gonna do it, Nintendo would.
Joy-con optic mouse function? 🤯 no more terrible controls in strategy games on consoles, love it ,that would be so clever and totally unpredictable❤😅
Theyre not “random colors” they’re complimentary lol
The mouse controls might be good for DS and maybe Wii U games. I saw somebody say how it'll be good for Mario Maker.
If that is indeed IR mouse technology, then that is truly brilliant!
Ok now you got me excited for the reveal
Nice idea. Unfortunately probably it will not work like mouse.
Whaaaaaat? Its blue? No wayyy. This will change the course of History.
amaterasu for smash with mouse and motion controls lmao
lenovo legion go really was the switch 2 after all..
no one mentions it but that came straight to me when i saw this type of sensor
that would be nuts. would make it so you could port over older pc games like diablo 2 or star craft. plus itll give indy developers an extra option for more types of games.
In my opinion, this image is fake because:
1) theres no screws (actually only one is visible in all the images shown).
2) 11:55 - where are the Dpad buttons? You can only see one button (probably the →), but we should be able to see at least 3 buttons on the side (↑, ↓ , →). Pretty much like the actual joy con on the right image, where you can see the 3 buttons.
As a point & click fan, this would be perfect
Completely disappointing joycons... Looks about as thin as the first one for the grip area.. And entirely unergonomic. And I suspect the new switch will be even heavier so.. Makes for an overall worse experience.
Thanks for the demonstration of the joycon it was interesting to see it used like a mouse and to use your thumb on the stick and your pointer finger and middle finger to click the top buttons like a mouse you could also use the other joycon as w,a,s,d so basically walk forward with action buttons and mouse around for aiming with other joycon dude that’s awesome what a time to be alive!!!!
None of this is accidental. Nintendo gave the information to leakers to create hype.
Nintendo be like: those pesky PC gamers emulating our games, let’s see how they like we emulating theirs!!
I highly doubt that thing is meant for a mouse
The serial number wasn’t anything. This had already been debunked. The serial number was for a Wii steering wheel
Leaks keep the plumber in business!
why would you go on twitter for nintendo info thats like going to 4chan asking for a leaked dreamcast game that came out in 2005
The reveal trailer is going to insane if all the speculation is correct. Nintendo knows what they are doing.
Kid Icarus for launch with the mouse attachment
C stands for Cursor
Or Connect (With NSO/Gaming Lobby) or Chat? or all of above, haha.
@nintendo can we get the switch 2 announcement like yesterday so i can book a week off of work please.
Nothing wrong with "legacy tech" I prefer that. Cause Nintendo is the only company that ever gets the most out of ANY tech they use.
