    The test is a good start. I think like others have said, ensuring the weight of each drop, good clamping (in some drops, the clamp moved, so the impact was absorbed by this movement instead of directly translating as force to the blade) the precise height of the drop, and the exact same impact zone on the blade. I noticed you did a good job keeping the hand drawn line aligned with the deer antler, but perhaps fixing the antler and using a more robust method to ensure the blade doesn't move might make for a better second test. Still, this is better than I've seen on a YT test to this point and easy for keyboard warriors to dictate precision conditions. Your test demonstrates the vast toughness difference of the different steel metallurgy. Good job.

    This is great. If you do more of this in the future, I'd be very interested to see how the same steel performs at different HRC in this test and see the rolling v. chipping sweet spot

    Great test. The results are pretty much what I expected. Not the exact numbers but the order of toughness and how far apart they would be. Are you the one who made these?

    Magnacut is supposed to be treated to 63-64 HRC, per Dr. Larrin Thomas the inventor of Magnacut.

      of course. The MagnaCut that I make supports all heat treatments from 60 to 64 HRC.

      He did not say all magnacut should be 63-64 you are either remembering wrong or misquoting him. He thinks 62 is good for fixed blades. Here are his words from a forum post at bladeforums:
      “”The 2050-350 heat treatment results in around 61-62.5 Rc and offers balanced properties including good edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Higher hardness can be achieved with increased austenitizing temperature and/or decreased tempering temperature. Higher hardness can be used when maximum strength is desired for improved stability and edge retention in fine cutting knives. For example, many Japanese kitchen knives are in the range of 62-64 Rc and MagnaCut would be very well suited to that hardness range for those types of knives.”
      So I characterized 62+ Rc as an optional heat treatment depending on the application.”
      63-64 will be more prone to micro chips and lose a little toughness as well, but it’s probably still plenty tough. Micro chips aren’t a huge deal but I think 62 is better for a field use fixed blade

      The balance of properties still make an “underhardened” magnacut still preform better than most other options. It’s not like running 3v at 56

      Magnacut isn't as tough as 3V or Z-Tuff, but I agree that it has better edge stability at 63, but I still wouldn't expect it to perform as well as the tougher steels in this kind of test. Magnacut has better stain and wear resistance than the other steels. Everything's a tradeoff. Magacut isn't going to win at everything, but it's one of the most balanced steels. I would choose Magnacut for a bushcrafter or kitchen knife. I would choose 3V or Z-Tuff (or CD1, almost the same thing) for a chopper or survival knife.

    I'm now choosing between the 3V and MagnaCut. Looking at your results we can conclude that those two are exactly the same if we took into account the weight difference. Do you agree?

    I think the poor performance of Magnacut might be due to a poor heat treat. Improper heat treat can hurt toughness even at such a low HRC. Probably treating Magnacut should result in both a higher toughness and higher hrc to a point.

      I have a 3V knife that I gifted to a Japanese hunter some time ago.
      That 3V is 61HRC. I use it for butchering wild boars, and during the hunting season, after catching and dismantling a wild boar, I sharpen it again. With the dismantling of a wild boar, there is a roll, but there are no chips and the copy paper is cut.
      However, when dismantling the two boars, it was full of rolls and the copy paper was cant cut:)

      @@iszcyberspace so it handled one boar it was fine but 2 chipped it? The one in the video was 58 HRC correct? I would have though 3v would be pretty tough even at 60. Do you think Z-tuff is has noticeably better toughness in use?

      @@brandensutton2324 Not 3V for video. 3V in the video is 58HRC.
      61HRC 3V is an acquaintance's knife, not shown in the video.
      You can butcher two wild boars for 61 HRC without any chips.
      However, I think that further dismantling will be difficult due to rolls.
      It should be harder than 58HRC, but Hmm....
      I think Z-Tuff has great toughness.
      While referring to the toughness chart,
      I aimed for the cross line between the highest toughness of 3V and the hardness of Z-Tuff, and finished it at 62HRC.
      This is because, according to the chart, Z-Tuff 62HRC is slightly higher than 3V 58HRC toughness.
      I think that which is actually 3V 58HRC, is sufficient for toughness.
      However, with that toughness, I thought that if it were harder and had better wear resistance,
      I would be able to demonstrate the best performance, and I quantified it in the video;D

      1095 is very low in toughness and stains easily. With thin edges 1095 has very low edge stability. Wear resistance is very low. Why use it if there are so many better options for each category?
