    Professional photographers know how to run a business; Amateurs don’t. Photography skills are secondary. This is how distinctly mediocre photographers can have successful photography businesses.

      Mindset shifts is how one goes from shooting for a bagel to shooting for your day rate plus expenses, plus assistant, plus retouching fees, plus usage. Mindset shifts are how you do $50k weeks. My mindset is how I’ve been a pro for 33 yrs. Mindset shifts are how you win.

    The difference between a professional photographer and amateurs, professionals only buy what they need to get the job done, amateurs have no jobs!

      Photographers care about photographs. The rest spend most of their time in “this camera will take better pictures” instead of having better ideas. Some take pictures. I make pictures. Big difference. Thanks for being here.

    im doing all i can to NOT race to the bottom with pricing but when you quote a Double Tree by Hilton half-day rate of $300 for 6-7 head shots for "internal messaging" or "email avatars" use and youre NOT hired, things arent right in the photography world. granted this is a small market and theyre the biggest player in town but i was told "they usually do trade"...
    no way i want to get into weddings or senior portraits because in a community of about 50,000 there are literally 63 photographers!!!

    • @dougmacmillan1712
      @dougmacmillan1712 9 місяців тому

      In the ‘60s/‘70s Kodak stated it takes 20,000 in population to support each full time professional photographer. The market is super saturated with MWACS and GWACS. I saw it coming. I also saw the coming explosion in Information Technology. I went back and got a BS in Computer Science. Now I buy the photo gear I want and take it with us on our frequent travel adventures.

    What’s a good way to find a differential/selling point in certain niche?

    • @stevecarty
      @stevecarty  9 місяців тому

      first make sure that the work is next level. undeniable. unforgettable. when your work is nuts, selling to your niche is childs play. it's the shilling of shit work that will get you no where. Be fucking unbelievable with your ideas and your executions and your clients will be tripping over themselves to pay your dayrate. that's the differential. search your niche on behance.net if your better than the work there at a global level, you're good. if the work you see on behance makes you puke a bit in your mouth and say, oh shit. then you have a ways to go. so many try to sell before they even get good. they've no experience. none. and they're holding their hand out with their cameras asking for paper. you got this. just be fucking obessed. i'm writing this at 1:41am and it'll be at least another 3hours before i sleep. late nights is the laboratory. late nights is where the ideas live.

    • @stevecarty
      @stevecarty  9 місяців тому +1

      lol.. ummm ya. you can't get to mastery in any one of them if you're trying to do all of them. how many directors also do colour, editing and producing. all of them when they're new. and then they choose a specialty and really get to mastery. Every one of your favourite shooters got known for one thing. i shot fashion only for 5yrs. then added portraits. now i classify myself as a editorial portrait photographer. i can shoot everything. but i don't. it confuses my clients and scatters focus. i have a distinct style and a reputation. that comes from doing one thing amazingly over time.

    No one person can recommend what will work for you because at the end of the day, the camera is a tool. How you make use of it is up to you. It's the clowns out here who think "expensive equipment" is what makes the photo. No! The best camera is the one you own. I'm a perfect example. People thought I was using a DSLR when I first started. When in fact, it was a point and shoot. Keep it simple. Don’t go out and buy an expensive camera. Learn photography with a cheap camera. Buy a better one when you are great with the one you own.

    Have you ever heard this? "Nothing that can't be fixed in postproduction." That's the only difference between a """pro""" and a real photographer. The real photographer shows what is, not what we want it to be. If you have acne, are gray, or have wrinkled skin that is you and without a "pro" it takes away from you an editor sold you a lie. A good photographer, a true professional, is the one who captures the natural and REAL beauty of life on a roll, a glass or a sensor.
