another thing that will determine how much you get stung is how you handle your hives. Move slowly and deliberately and don't bang your equipment. Push down on a corner when prying up to prevent loud cracking sounds. Leave enough room when removing and replacing frames so you don't roll or crush bees. Try to get all the bees off the tops and bottoms of components when placing them for the same reason.
Oh, and watch where you put your hands. Most of the times I get stung it is on the hand because I put a finger on a bee.
Working with no gloves or the thinnest gloves you are comfortable with helps with dexterity and means you will provoke fewer stings.
A tip!for keeping alarm pheremone down when you get stung: smoke the area of the sting right away.

My family works around my hives most every day gardening. Just feet from from the hives. The only time anyone has been stung is when I sstepped on one. But that's my bad. In general we and the bees are one big happy family .

I started beekeeping about 2 weeks ago and wanted to inspect my hive. They are wild bees that just came to my empty box and started to build their hive. Winter is upon us and started to feed them pollen mix and sugar water. I opend the hive about 17:00 because I had not a lot of time but removed the Super and man those are some aggressive bees. The queen excluder was full of wax so I added a new one and cleaned it but saw a lot more activity in the super as soon as I replaced the queen excluder. Your videos are helping me more than you understand most of the other beekeepers want to sell their information but your welcoming me with open arms. Thank you again and keep up the good work.

Third year tryng to keep bees - Dave really shares import details - I killed a hive in spring because i broke the propolis seal of the hive and they froze overnight. This spring, I got a package w/ a Hybrid Russian queen - they were the meanest bees ever! I had to buy a full body bee suit to work em... Previously, just a vail w/ italians... I have since split them three ways adding two lovely queens from Dave. Both replacement queens are doing great and I can tell ya... the hives with his queens are not aggressive at all - the hybrid hive is still evil... [by evil i mean those bees would chase me, look for me hours later, etc] I'm gonna let her go through winter and replace her w/ a queen from Dave :)

In my opinion and based on what I have experienced I definitely agree with the statements made in this video. Must admit that I had never considered changing out the veil or clothing. But I agree. Experience plays a big role I think. The experience of dealing with a big hive with the field workers at home at the wrong time of day( cattle knocked over hive late in the day with rain coming) will never be forgotten! Under unfortunate circumstances a full suit will not prevent multiple stings. But as a rule dressing up as if you are an astronaut kills the joy of working with bees.

Most bees don't like the smell of strong perfume, strong smell of sweat or alcohol. They especially despise hair spray. We've had bees for over 10 years and they never like my mom's hair after she sprays it with hairspray or when my dad drinks a beer and goes near the hives. Just make sure you are clean and don't wear strong smells :)

I had Italians that absconded which were very gentle. I replaced with “Yugoslav” Carniolan and I will not work the hive without smoke and jacket, gloves, and veil. However, that said they are great honey producers, more cold tolerant than Italians, and build up very quickly. They also make really nice comb and have a strong grooming nature. I’m relocating back to my home in eastern Iowa and will have Carniolan’s again.

I never had bees of my own, never been stung either. I always let them have their go at whatever they are interested in, especialy in hot summers i let them drink of my drinks just because everyone is thirsty. The bee scouts around a bit and is on it's way again. Wonderfull creatures and very kind if you just let them do their thing. I always try to calm people when there is a bee as people can respond as if the poor thing is a bomb.

If there is a rumble of thunder way off don't open your hive nomatter how tame they are. I made this mistake once I could work this hive without any protection I was going to work stopped to check on the ladies (could here a Thunder storm approaching miles away) Popped the lid and the first thing that entered my mind was Ohh S#!*. I kept Italian for years and never wore protection, got stung pretty often but about 5 years ago I tried the Carniolan bees. If you like calm bees you should give them a try. I have been stung less than 10 times in the last 5 years. Weed eating right up to the hive, mowing does not upset them. David has some Carniolan blood in his Italian bees and I was guessing they did because of their gentleness.

I've seen several videos where the bee keeper will get stung. Then scrape the stinger off the wound, and smoke the sting area. They the smoke erases the pheromone oder. If it works, it seems like a quick way to deal with stings and keep working.
I dont have any bees yet, but that's on the list. Making a hive, a few traps and doing my research for now.

Five frame nucs? I've been mulling that over myself. I think it might be the most easiest way to grow and nurture a hive. Put two to three above to harvest honey with. Run nuc boxes side by side and face every other box the same way. Example; east facing then next box, west facing. I think this way would keep them warm through winter. Gonna try that out this next spring.

I think as a new beekeeper one of the things I've learned just to work the hive slowly and methodically you can't go in like a bull in a china shop. That makes a difference to. The time of year makes a difference as well and I think it's worth noting notice the bees individual behaviors. I noticed if they stop what they're doing stand their ground and stick their butts up in the air they're not real happy and if I'm not mistaken I've seen the Stinger sticking out in a drop of Venom coming out. I always took that as a warning

My issue with getting stung is I seem to be allergic to the stings. Every time I get stung I swell pretty bad. An example, I got stung once on the wrist a Few weeks ago and couldn’t wear my watch for a few days due to the swelling. I’m not sure how to counter act the swelling. So I wear a jacket and vail any time I go into my hives.

I take Prednisone and it really reduces the swelling quickly

How can you know for sure you only run Italians? When a new queen goes out to mate how do you know there aren't Russian drones in the air?

You need island mated queens or artificially inseminated queens

240 nucs, flood the area with Italian drones. Give freebie queens to your neighbours (some commercials do this) this increases your chances of remaining Italian.

I would name it .,... : "Bees become more PROTECTIVE !"
    (*... not "more aggressive"...),
    because , ...
We need to take in consideration, who is The One who uninvited pushes into.... others territory or home.
(* Very often this type of confusing Language is used in Human relationships , through out the Hystori . )
It looks that ONLY What we learned from History is , ... " that we learned NOTHING !"
