I thought I was the only one that frets over my hives during Fall and winter. My kids and now my grandkids have always been amused by me putting an ear against the back of my hives; you can tell a lot by listening to a colony.
That’s all a part of the processes tho! It’s kind of fun to go out there in the snow and see what we can find out about how they’re doing. It’s just so nerve wracking heading into winter with those girls! But, seeing a hive come out in the spring flourishing I think is the best feeling on this planet!
Current best research (Randy Oliver, Fred Dunn, Seely, etc.) suggests moisture control is more important to humans vs. bees. 2-3" of good foam insulation (two boards) under the top cover with a feeding shim will retain top heat causing condensation to form on the cooler sides, not over the cluster. Tilt hive forward (as normal), so any water runs out.
Ya know that actually make sense, I showed Kasey this. We are going to experiment with this. For hives that are on pallets..I wonder if that extra ventilation from the bottom would be helpful. But then if snow gets in it may create a mess. Hmmmmm…
I just buttoned up my hives for the winter. I did a mite treatment, my top deep is full of honey, and I put a 10lb sugar brick on each of um and thin reflective insulation on that and 1 inch foam board on that. Southern Ohio winters haven't been bad lately. I use a stethoscope to know where my bees are
I'm planning to do the same... Hive/honey + candy board + moisture box + foam top insulation + cover.. I'm also considering adding 1" foam all around the hive + tar paper wrap. Cold weather is on the short horizon
@richardvogel1195 sounds like you built quite the wintering plans. i can't wait till spring, and I hope you comment and let us know how it went for you!
Like your video You leave you hives on the flat. I find by putting a inch and a half block under the back of the hive cause the moister at the top to run down the wall and not drip down onto the bees. It works for me. I got this idea from a beekeeper who never covers his hive during the winter.
@richardlearning3452 Learning to use these pallets has been a new thing for the last 2 years. Are you talking bout doing this with normal bottom boards or on pallets?
I purchased a TOPDON thermal imaging camera that connects to my phone. The FLIR has it's own battery and requires you to charge it. The TOPDON uses the actual phone for power. The Bug Farmer did a review on it if you want to see how it works. The big difference I found is the FLIR allows you to connect it to your phone even with a case due to the adjustable connector. The TOPDON connects directly to your phone if the phone does not have a case but it requires the included extension cable if you have a case (at least on my iphone with an otterbox.) They are cool tools, it's neat to see them even in the summer. Keep in mind if you have an iphone they will be changing to a USB-C in the future so if you get one with a lightning plug you'll need a small extension cord to allow it to work with a newer model phone. Thanks for sharing!
@@jaibusby673 What kinda phone do you have? It's hard to find a phone under $250 these days. Do you know of any cheaper thermal imaging cameras? I was just recommending it because they mentioned possibly getting one in the video.
@@BrianCooper901 a second hand motorola edge 20 pro bought it for 450 and the cheapest topdon is 489.95 on local website, so wasn't lying. thermals are always pricey tho.
Strong hives with lots of resources I've noticed they will take a few drones through winter with them and all these hives have so much resources in them
Two queens in fall are not so uncommon. In my language it's called "quiet change". Old one would leave hive in spring with handful of bees early or make a big swarm later.
@ a lot of people don’t even know what this piece of equipment was designed for. I’m just trying to educate them. A high in thermal imager could be from $500-$2000. I hate for anybody to spend that kind of money and be disappointed. You really can do the same thing by just putting your ear up to the colony and closing off the other ear. Now, if you’re going to do a bunch of cut outs you can give you a somewhat heat signature
@RipRoar-ns4go it should be a supplement to their food stores some believe adding them to early can make them go through honey stores quicker and simply move up to the sugar bricks and once they do you will have to keep adding sugar bricks as they use them in the winter. Are ur hives pretty heavy currently?
@@theterriblebeekeeper7435 Thanks TTBK7435.. I would've liked to have more honey in the stores on all my hives. That's why I'm thinking about throwing the candy boards on them now, so that they can have something extra now to prepare for the upcoming colder weather. I just wasn't sure if there were/are any downsides to adding them before it turns very cold. i'd rather get them started now and ensure they're fat and ready for winter. I appreciate your insight.
What do you think about the David Burns candy board feeder and have you used them? Also, the furry cover, not foam, work great for the wind noise. Thank you in advance!
that dude lies and sells his lies in those lame candy feeders!!!!!! no proof that they are good at all but takes everybody money if they dumb enough to buy it!!!!!
🤣A little, you get down right jumpy about it.😂😂 The phone versions of the thermal cameras are cheaper, generally. Keep an eye out for moisture under the foam-board and the lid, then it'll freeze.
That’s exactly what I’m worried about…water getting under the foam board and freezing. Maybe we could try tapping it. Great suggestion, Hmmmmm I guess we will see what happens!
I don’t have one up yet specifically walking thru mountain camp but I explain it well in this video. This is how I’ve always applied sugar, if you were to do it mountain camp style then it would be the same process just minus the water that I add to the sugar. ua-cam.com/video/A5xGI70dGVM/v-deo.htmlsi=6HeHnV6CNGBHraBm This video shows Kasey’s set up with mountain camp when he was taking the sugar off. ua-cam.com/video/4tqk-wDTGAw/v-deo.htmlsi=phlYx17ImGW7nYm3

@aanadyia4582 She wouldn't be mateable in the spring i would assume, but I've definitely learned bees will just do whatever random thing they decide to do
I would just order couple AI queens from VP bees those are the best vsh strains I've ran .. treatment free they were shaking zeros in October... That would make you legit vsh breeder mean time you can work on new strains.. those AI latshaws and harbo hard to get new queens early every spring.. they are responsible at 400.00 each .. order them now so you have yours before everyone.... this would open up the commercial market as well

hello, thank you very much for all your videos and good explanations
there are still a lot of males ( drones) in your hive 🤔

Quiet change..I like that and may steal that from ya 😉
These are called thermal imagers .
They will get the job done . But remember they are for reading surface temperature .not inside the hive
@handsburyhoneybees893 valid point, but could you explain why that matters? I'm interested in a longer explanation of this from you.

My 10 lb sugar brick is sized to where there's a 1 inch gap all around it. Good air flow around it, but nothing crazy
@richardvogel1195 whats your style of making them may i ask? Like how much sugar how long in the oven how water do you add?
In your opinion, is it too early to feed sugar cakes in your area?
Depends on the amount of resources they have id say

Some of my queens look small this time of year too..especially if they were a emergency queen
