ALFRED KIM is the best Mao I've ever heard. What edge and pitch he has to his voice. Bravo! This whole production appears beautifully sung and costumed. And the Kissinger's facial expressions and behavior speaks volumes of his character's inner dialogue. So great to see such rich subtle acting in opera.

The Brian Large-esque video direction allowed us to appreciate all the texture in the performances, too. Fantastic job overall.

This is one of my favorite moments from the opera. Adams's writing for Mao is beautiful: "The world to come has come. The world to come has come. The world to come has come...is theirs, is theirs..." Kim's voice is magnificently resonant. The only quibble is that everyone seems a bit loud in the moments after "We know the great, silent majority will bide its time." A great performance all around, though!

It was Goodman who wrote the words, though.

During the 1972 visiting, Mao was still quite able. Only the second visit in 1976 showed Mao was nearly over.

The Chairman was near the end of his life and was recovering from an enormous recent stroke when the meeting took place... he was barely able to stand.

As an American it's interesting to see this performed by a foreign opera company. Makes me wonder if people from other cultures have similar reactions when hearing pronunciations of their native tongue! It is nice though to see a production where both Chairman Mao, Premier Chou, and (I assume/hope, not having seen the rest) Madame Mao are all played by actual Asian vocalists. I'd have to see more to have any idea how the stagings unfolded throughout the opera.

The staging is pretty dull: Peter Sellars seems to be the only director of this opera who ever shows the great irony of Nixon's "My feet are firmly planted on the ground, like yours," and "We no longer need Confucius" needs to be staged much more dramatically to justify the explosive music there. But it's nicely sung--I love the secretaries' voices.

The stage probably wanted to focus on the characters exclusively, since this is the most photographed and known part of Nixon's visit. It reminds me of the 2004 Royal Opera House staging for 'Die Zauberflöte', and how Papageno's and Pamina's aria was brought down to the smallest staging possible.
Also, the Chatélet performance had some of the best Nixon in China stagings I've seen later on. The whole Red Detachment of Women ballet sequence was mesmerizing, as was Madame Mao's aria.
