The harmonic shift in that pulsing accompaniment figure at 27:15 ("We can save it...") never fails to give me chills. This whole score is brilliant.
Thank you, very much, for making this available.
Much prefer the Houston version to the Met version. This was great. Thank you!
Great to hear and have the score to follow.
I watched this work on Channel Four when it was broadcast there for the first time on UK TV. (1987?). I even recorded it on a video recorder. Pity that I have it no longer to watch. I am amazed that no available DVD recording of that production can be purchased. Such a shame as it was a superbly done and the few bits shown on UA-cam, have stood the test of time. Anyone with a recording of the original out there?
Thanks for your hard work, Minimal Effort! UA-cam is graced by your quality uploads - truly a trove of minimalism!
Agreed.
5:17 the people are the heroes now
Thanks for making this available to all. God bless you
I particularly appreciate this score version.. Good for music theory analysis.
36:35 sounds like the Chairman Dances.
terrific music, thank you!
For this first section of my re-do of this series, I have supplemented the missing pages from the 'News' aria' with excerpts from John Adams' handwritten piano-vocal score. No other live recording (save perhaps that of the 2011 Met production) has as few performance flaws as the original PBS broadcast of the Houston premiere, so that's what I'll be using here for the most part.
Its awesome
My fave John Adams piece. News ! News! aria is great! Waaaaay better than anything Philip Glass wrote.
sodelicious ...
solid version, but perhaps a bit too fast for my liking, i grew to love the 2000s ENO version, even with its recording problems
i just noticed you are unlisting the ENO performance - are you planning to delete it or..?
@@bazdesh A: The overture/opening choruses here are actually closer to Adams' written tempo indication. I've actually found that orchestras tend to play this section best at this speed - i.e. the orchestra for the Paris 2012 production lost their way a lot during the opening when they cut down the tempo.
B: I'll be unlisting them one by one as the new videos go up but I won't delete them.
@@minimaleffort8780 So how does one find part I now that you have unlisted it ? I too like the ENO version a lot, with all its minor flaws.
