It seems like it was just yesterday that we were talking about PCIe Gen 4, so to hear that PCIe Gen 5 is not only upon us, but already built into current generation products, well that’s a bit of a surprise. So, what’s the deal with PCIe Gen 5? How fast is it? What even supports it, and why should you care? Well I’m aiming to answer those questions, so stick around!

Thank you for a real, sane, explanation that PCIe Gen5 (and Gen6 coming) is to support the super-fast Ethernet speeds used in data centers. It will be years before full Gen5 support (and especially Gen6 support) comes to your purchasable home computer.

I like how the idea of hardware manufacturers for pcs is to have people beta test their DDR5 ram and other pcie components while also charging the consumer more money for the privilege.

Why are Intel, AMD, and motherboard manufacturers adding PCIe5 if there isn’t a benefit for consumers? Is it because of marketing, or that the server products need the bandwidth and it is simpler to unify the consumer and commercial product lines?

I plan to get a gen5 board and plan to use gen4 products for now. Getting a used 3yr/o GPU. When I eventually do upgrade my graphics card, I expect they’ll be on PCIe 5.0.
With current technology, I could care less. I’ll run this GPU for a minimum of 2-3 years. If the manufacturers don’t make the technology available, why would anyone develop for it.
Definitely agree a lot is just stupid marketing, however. Gen 5 SSDs are actually useless when going through m.2 as my understanding goes.

Smart move on AMD's part. If they intend on supporting AM5 for several years similar to AM4, I could see pcie4 being maxed out by GPUs, especially if rumors are accurate and performance is doubling this gen. It would only take a gen or two of these types of increases to really chew in to the 4.0 bandwidth. And if DirectStorage really shines with 5.0, x670 is ready for that too. Early adopters of Zen 4 will be able to drop a theoretical Zen 6 cpu, RTX 6080 and 5.0 NVME into their 2022 x670 without too much concern regarding compatibility issues. Unlike current 300 series AM4 boards which are stuck on 3.0 NVME speeds(no real issue) and 3.0x16(slight performance loss in top tier gpus)

Your comment was the most helpful bit of information I've found in a good couple of hours of researched.
I screwed up, went with a z790 hero board seeing it supported pci gen5 and got 2 gen 5 m.2 ssds. One 4tb and luckily the other 2tb, come to find out the little hypercard doesn't support running 2 gen5 ssds at once and if I plug the hypercard into the gen5 slot I learned that I would be throttling the gpu down to x8, which as I understand it is the equivalent to pcie 3.0 x16.
My wasted money... argh. I've been trying to figure out whether or not it would be worth sacrificing my 4090 speeds by switching the m.2 slot into the one that supports gen5 and just plugging the other 2 tb ssd straight into the mobo. At least I can make use of the gen 5 speeds of the big one, luckily i installed windows on that one, and I'm very pleased to learn that I will only lose about 1-2% performance on my 4090 by doing so.
Had a sinking feeling in my gut when I realized I screwed up. Haven't built a pc in 10 years. So I've learned a lot!
But I just wanted to thank you, your comment fully settled the issue for me and I'm very grateful for your knowledge.

Once PCIe gen 4 was accepted it took forever to get M.2 NVMe drives to comply. Now that they are here it already is a huge commercial success. From gaming consoles to data centers, they all have the need for speed. I think PCIe gen 5 might be closer than we think. But the big question will be... will it be backwards compatible.

Here's an idea, given that M.2 SSDs can't keep up with the PCIe speeds without overheating, why don't we just make every PCIe 5.0 M.2 drive an x2 interface instead of x4?
If SSD controllers can't stay cool enough then maybe we should think about stalling the speed increase for a PCIe generation by halving the number of lanes on drives and ports and use the lanes that are saved to add more connecters to the board.
Personally I would like all internal storage drives to be running NVMe on single PCIe lanes.

What is your view on co-sharing the Gen 5.0 PCIe slot with both a 4090 and an SSD? I am in the process of building my first PC (coming from a Mac) and I see a lot of people are recommending NOT to use the SSD slot of Gen 5 or it will impact the performance of the 4090 as they co-share the lanes. I am planning on building a dual 4090 workstation using the 14900k intel chip. I am also thinking of installing x2 M2 SSDs. I am confused as to where I should plug the M2s SSDs as I am trying to avoid the performance of my two 4090 cards. I will be using the Gigabyte Z790 Master X motherboard. Thank you!
