  • Sailing the world has always been a dream, but can dreams come true? In this episode, I start documenting my journey to buy a sailboat and eventually sail the world. I first needed to purchase a sailboat and sail it up the inside passage from Seattle Washington to Sitka Alaska.
In this episode I sail from Port Neville Canada to Port McNeill Canada. I finish my trek through Johnstone Straight and enter Port McNeill, where I wait for the weather to clear so I can round Cape Caution. I spend a few days in town and buy new charts before I head back out. I also discover that I have sprung an oil leak.

Thanks!! I can't think of anywhere along the trip that wasn't beautiful. Definitely made returning to reality and the daily grind difficult, but someday I hope that this is my daily reality. Thanks for watching, hope you continue to follow along!

You ARE courageous! With virtually no experience, to motor/sail that passage and face the cold? Bravo man! I'm new this season to sailing on Lake Ontario, but have the same dream - to head south and begin the great adventure, see the world, take on life's challenges... that moment of quietude and serenity was EXACTLY the reason I sail as well - what a moment of bliss!
In early episodes, getting crew was a disappointment, the bank account was precarious but you forged on - well done man.
Watched all episodes over the last couple days. Looking forward to watching the learning curve as you gain experience and overcome your hurdles.

Thanks for watching, I really appreciate that! It was a rollercoaster ride emotionally at the beginning, but once I got out there, was an amazing and life changing adventure for me. I'm going to be covering a little more in-depth some of what got left out in future videos; anything you're specifically wanting to know? Hope your sailing season is amazing this fall, being from Michigan I know how amazing the colors can be. Thanks again for watching!

Thanks NSS, nice chatting to you. I'm John, my boat is "Righteous", a CS 36. I like how you went straight for your move up boat right away and skipped the learner - why waste time and money on a 25 footer which you'll grow out of quickly? I went the same route. I know these videos get posted sometimes months after they happened so I'm sure you're already a more confident and knowledgeable sailor. Hell, you were a different man by the time you arrived in Sitka. What struck me overall is that you had so little experience but had the desire and despite the challenges of getting crew, you went anyway - Bravo man! That lonely last night in Seattle you had was a gut wrencher. I've been sailing solo on the north shore of Lake Ontario this summer and just about to head out for my first solo "tour" of the west end of the lake. I've shot video this summer but not sorted it or posted it. Great Lakes vs Ocean sailing... you win! I think you got your chart plotter figured out but you didn't address that on vid. Anchoring solo in tight bays was impressive! Are you on Instagram? I watch a LOT of sailing videos to learn and then apply it to my boat. I retire May 26, 2020 and then...WHOOP !!

To be honest, I started with a 23ft sailboat that I bought cheep due to its condition. It never made it to the water, but still taught me a lot, like 4' 11" isn't enough head room for a 6' guy. You are correct, these videos are about a year old now and there has been a lot of new adventures and growth. After releasing these videos I have been encouraged to continue putting content out. I've decided to go for it, but that is a story yet to be told. Thanks for all your support, I can't wait to see where your journey leads. Stay tuned to see where I'm headed. I'm also on Instagram @northstarsouthofficial and for Facebook or Twitter its @northstarsouth and Snapchat is just northstarsouth.

You are a contagious guy. When every one else is headed toward the coast of Mexico, Bermuda or the Bahamas, you go in the opposite direction toward the cold and desolate places. Good for you! When you said, "If anyone wants to know why I love cruising just look and listen." You absolutely made your point! The incredible beauty of God's creation and the absolute silence and solitude is extraordinary and I don't blame you a bit for 'going your own way.' I look forward to all your videos. Stay safe and enjoy your life where you are.

Thanks, I really appreciate that! Yes, the absolute beauty of the Pacific Northwest is amazing and I can by no means do it justice. I will admit though, I would be heading South myself if I didn't have to work to pay off the boat... and save up for that trip. Thanks for the comment; sorry about the delay in my response, but just got back into town after a work trip. And with that I also uploaded the next episode; it'll go live on Thursday morning (Alaska Time). Hope you enjoy!
