At Dhamrai by the side of Dhaka-Aricha highway, on a 15-acre land, AKH has developed this ECO-friendly project: AKH ECO Apparels Ltd, strictly applying the Gold Category requirements of Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED), which are officially prescribed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Within a half-square-kilometer circumference of ECO Apparels, housing and other necessary civic facilities are available. So, people working with it live nearby and use carbon emission free modes of communication. And, in fact, most of them now are coming to the factory on foot, or just riding bicycles With fire-door, auto pump and auto sprinkler, its firefighting system and preparation is of world standards.
The factory has all measures and features to ensure safety, security and good working environment for the people working in it. Open terrace with grass carpeting and rooftop gardens add to its pleasant and healthy ambiance.This is the first one of its kind in and near Dhaka. In fact, it is one of the best worker-friendly and eco-sustainable garment factories in the world.
Enjoying the most pleasant outdoor and indoor environments here, on about 500,000 sft of floor space, about 6000 workers work in 52 lines & produce about 1.3 million pieces of premium quality woven shirts, blouses, tops and dresses every month.
One of the added impressive features of ECO Apparels is that, applying contemporary technology, packing area is weather controlled so that the garments packed in cartons are conditioned for certain period in the finishing & packaging section. It prevents garments from gathering moisture and thereby later no fungus/mole until they reach the buyers’ store.
By going green, compared to that of a non-green factory like its size, Eco Apparels has made it happen to reduce its electricity consumption from national greed by 75 MWH per year by way of its solar system, which has reduced use of fuel oil by 20 MT a year. Machines of cutting-edge energy efficient technology and scientific use of daylight inside the production floors would save electricity usage by about 500 MWH a year reducing use of fuel oil by 125 MT per year. Use of energy efficient LED bulb and tube has saved electricity consumption by about 720 MWH a year and reduced use of fuel oil by 180 MT per year. All is contributing to lessening carbon emission, of course, in an impressive way for an individual garment factory like ours. Besides, compared in the same way, it has reduced use of supply water by engineering usage-optimization and rainwater harvesting. Sewerage treatment plant treats 12,000 liters of water per hour, and this water is being reused here properly. Application of water efficient fixture helps reduce consumption by 30 percent.
The factory is situated on an already running and well maintained highway - so, communication is not an added pressure on the environment. The factory building, which will never rise beyond two floors other than basement, has 14 wide staircases to access and to exit. People work here in the world-class best working environment. The factory roof and walls are built with solar heat reflecting technique and materials. Adequate exhausters keep rooms cool. Wide rooftop open terraces, gardens and spaces surround the working rooms; they are designed to play an important role in case of any emergency evacuation, if need be at all. However, altogether the central cooling system maintains room temperature below 30 degree Celsius always. Its construction materials like iron and steels are rerolled - they strain not the natural reserves at all. Bricks, sands, cements etc too are sourced locally from nearest places. It means everything is contributing to less burning of energy, less carbon footprint, and so more conservation of nature.
However, Eco Apparels will offer regular prices - no premium would be quoted for whatever the extra cost it has borne for going green.
