I purchased this Apple TV 4K summer of 23 and I hooked it up and tried it but was more comfortable with my built in TCL control so I quit using the apple and put it away thinking well that was a waste of a 160 bucks or whatever I paid. Well fast forward to around Christmas and I bought 3 Apple home speakers and that lead me to watch a video or two about the Apple TV and I reconnected it to my brand new LG OLED and it’s been a much better experience than the stock controls for all your apps. The apps load immediately unlike the other TV box top app controllers and it’s just easy to use. It’s very close to my phone so it all works easy for me. I like the controller but it was a bit smaller than I am used to but then I went on Amazon and bought a silicone case for the remote and that really made the remote so much better and less delicate to me. Interested in getting one, however the reason I've not so far is the Sonos issue with the loud banging that occurs from the sound I've read elsewhere. Anyone know if this has been fixed?
Just cancelled a disastrous product called Sky Stream. Wifi on the boxes kept dropping so I have ethernet cables running all over the house. Had Q, couldn't get on with Stream at all - and the cost!? I have three Apple TV in our home. My wife and son both have their own Apple accounts but we can share each other’s accounts on any of the Apple TV. That gives us a massive movie library!
Ive been a big fan of Apple TV for years, love the screen savers but I still wish you could delete or hide some and just have your favourite ones on display, yes I know you can turn off some themes but you don't need to fly over a desert or clouds twice, there is also a new menu on the Apple home page which I'm surprised you didn't mention, maybe it's a Beta thing, anyway great video as usual.
Click on the Apple icon then click left on the outer circle of the remote (sometimes more than once) and you get a drop down menu with channels and search stuff.@@MarkEllisReviews
I’m interested Mark how you record tv shows or do see a tv guide with your Apple TV. Our sky contract is up in 3 months and I’m considering cancelling it. So I’d like to tap into some of your knowledge?
I just got a new appletv 4K over the holiday season, cuz I love the ease of pairing my AirPods Pro’s to them. Unfortunately the share audio that allows you to pair two sets seems to be removed! Perhaps I am mistaken but that feature isn’t anywhere in my control center
It's there, but you no longer have 'share audio' as a selectable option in the ATV control centre, instead you just put a check next to both pairs of airpods you want to use.
Great timing! I bought my second Apple TV yesterday before going to sleep! Integration with other Apple products is phenomenal. I love using my Airpods, controlling TV with the Apple Watch, iCloud Photos sync, the remote control is amazing, and other bits about Apple ecosystem. You really need to use it for some time to appreciate how great it is. Stopped using Android TV 10 on my Sony OLED TV.
I agree with every point you've made. I will preface this comment by stating Apple TV 4K has changed my life. Apple TV has been one the best purchasing decisions I've made. Is it cheap?... heck no, it's Apple after all. I got my 2nd Apple TV 4K in July 2022 as a belated birthday present to myself and I can say there isn't a day I don't use it in some way. It's become the central hub for what time of my leisure time I choose to spend watching a film/tv show or using Apple fitness. I loved it so much that I decided to get a second one and put it in the living room. It's thanks to Apple that I sit & watch movies/tv shows etc in the living room (I couldn't cast to tv) now because I can - I don't spend all my time on my own when I am home just in my bedroom now). Our entertainment system at home before Apple TV, was so fragmented & Apple TV has if anything added value & benefit and I think it's brought our entertainment system more together. It has in many ways, it's brought my family closer together and has provided a broader spectrum of entertainment to our lives (there's no trouble accessing and watching movies/tv shows in my library now I have an Apple TV). There are films/tv shows I have in my library that we don't have on the tv or on dvd. Factor in the fact most of my family have iPads & iPhones, it means that they get a fuller and more immersive experience in the Apple Ecosystem (without the expense of buying an Apple TV 4K themselves). I upgraded my TV from HD to 4K because I wanted to create that at home cinema experience (2 HomePod minis connected) - this has been a blessing during covid times. I've used screen sharing/casting onto my Apple TV in the living room so I can show something on the screen (ie there's an problem needs solving on a document I'm working on, disclaimer: all personal to me docs) & we've been able to sit, look at the document & talk through issues to find solutions. I know it’s probably an unusual way to use Apple TV, but it's been a blessing in disguise. Apple fitness has helped me keep on top of fitness goals during covid times. The likes of Apple fitness being available to me has meant it’s made it easier for to keep going with my weight loss journey & lose 7st (approx 98lbs or 44kg) in weight. I’ve gotten fitter, healthier, stronger & slimmer. I don't think what I'm saying above can truly convey just how much it has played a hugely positive role in my life but it really has changed my life. I love how seamless my AirPods connect to the Apple TV box. Admittedly, before getting my first Apple TV (32gb box); I was really hesitant to get one. I wasn't sure if It was worth it & would it I get any benefit satisfaction/enjoyment out of using it - I'm glad I did get it. I actually originally bought one then returned it because I had 2nd thoughts, only to later kick myself after more research. I've been encouraging my friends/family to get one. So, I went and repurchased it (the first tv box) again... & I've no regrets getting it all.
I just purchased a regular Samsung 4K…I HAD FOR 5 YEARS OLED SAMSUNG…very big difference…would an APPLE 4K BOX make things smoother or should I just return and buy an OLED Samsung?
I use it for buying movies 🍿 🎥 in 4K… I mean when Jaws is £2.99 I mean damn.. I have got quite a great collection of movies at great discounts much cheaper than UltraHD blu ray and I like to feel I still own a collection…
I'm a bit of a hybrid with my tech, MacBook Air M1, Ipad pro 2020, and Samsung S23 Ultra! and then like Mark ditched Sky after years of paying far too much for what I actually used, I began looking at alternatives and believe I spent far too many hours in my opinion doing this but long story short I jumped into the ATV 4K and what a release, I now probably spend just short of my previous Sky subscription but have so much more content which I actually what and also don't channel hope which really did drive me crazy. I don't have enough time to go into alll the great features of the ATV but as others here just find along with other apple tech just works! (Albeit I can't see myself converting from my Samsung S23 ultra to an iPhone unless iPhone 16 does something amazing! sadly though I don't see them every having an inbuilt stylus which I use daily with my Samsung) I continue to be optimistic that one day I will have an iPhone!!!!
Thanks for a great review. I’m a big fan of Apple with most things & there is so much going for Apple TV. However….and call me weird… but I like to watch some live TV channels and like to review what’s on the main channels each evening. So, there doesn’t appear to be a daily or weekly TV programme guide like on SKY…..is that right? Cheers and thanks again for the review.
Yes it’s still good. You will need to create an Apple account to have apps and stuff but it’s good. I’ve read comments on non-Apple users purchasing it and has had no issues.
Great review, with a caveat. I live in the French Alps and at time of writing, my internet comes through a copper wire. Yup, an above ground (so affected by heat, rain, snow, sub-zero temps, sitting birds, tall trucks, trees) copper wire. So the idea that sound and 4k images are a given just by plugging ATV in, is not really true. I will be upgrading to Starlink, but for now, even with this magic little box, it will be basic.
The Apple TV 4K is awesome device to add to your arsenal, especially if you own other products from Apple. The price is very acceptable, which can not be said for some other Apple products. I stopped using apps installed through the tv's OS, or the set-top box for cable tv. All I use is the Apple TV 4K, pretty handy indeed. I can even operate my lights or light scenes on it, thanks to the Apple Home integration.
Aw, lack of friends? I'll be your friend!!! Thanks for the review! Helpful! I was looking into getting Apple TV. I've an 8ish y/o Samsung tv with a great picture but the software is completely useless! I don't wanna spend around $1k for a new tv that'll only become obsolete in a few/several years.. Will likely get Apple TV
I’ve just watched all of your video. You did go on about the speakers a little bit too much but then again you had to because they gave you a set for free. I’m going to give you 10 out of 10 for your video the little bit about finding the loss remote fantastic I have had my original Apple TV since 2012 just been to the flagship store and bought the K4 most expensive with the biggest amount of storage absolutely over the moon, especially for watching new movies like Oppenheim and Napoleon thank you for your time. Regards DSM 🇬🇧
I did think it took a little while to set up, but got the hang of it in the end as I’m an apple product addict the screensavers are fantastic. Is there a way we can choose different settings for screensavers?
Thanks for making the video. Mark, can you please confirm something for me before I make a purchase. If you log into the UA-cam app on the Apple TV 4K, can you see your private and unlisted videos within the app? I ask as our so called smart tv has the youtube app and when logged into it and I select 'my videos' only those videos that are visible, I cant see all my other videos? I have tried this on the PS5 and another smart tv and it appears there must be a limitation with the youtube app on certain devices. The only way I can play my unlisted or private videos is to chromecast the video from my iphone or ipad to the tv which is pointless when the tv already has a youtube app.
Anyone here experiencing weird rewinding and fast forwarding on its own while watching? Got mine about a month ago and noticed this behavior on my ATV-4k (128GB).
My wife and I would each like to be able to watch television with headphones or AirPods. Even though Apple TV promotes the ability to have two qualified Apple Bluetooth devices, I’ve never been able to make it work.
If they ever put Safari on the Apple TV, it’s a no-brainer for me. The chip is plenty powerful, not sure why they won’t give us native browsing without AirPlay.
ATV is a great device but I’m not sure it’s a ‘replace everything’ device. From a cost perspective all the streamers have bumped up their costs significantly (especially if you want the benefit of 4k and atmos). All the core services comes in at about £50/month now and you lose the sheer convenience of sky. My current approach is a main sky package with Netflix and UHD and then take a subscription with one of the others now and again to catch up on the new stuff. Neither Disney nor ATV+ have enough to justify permanent subs (for me at least).
My mom won’t get rid of her cable service, but her cable company has an Apple TV app, so she still can get rid of her cable box and use the app for her channel guide.
I sold my Apple TV because it added very little over the built in smart functionality on my several year old Panasonic TVs. Fine, perhaps, if you have too much money, or subscribe compulsively to everything; but I think we'd probably all be better off if we spent a bit less time watching hours of mindless telly.
I was desperate to get SKY out of my life with their awful business practices. Apple TV seemed to be the only viable choice to us. I'm seriously impressed with it. Yeah, it takes a bit of getting used to that you cant just flip through channels, but that is probably a good thing, right? What I have found is that I really only watch: BBC iPlayer, Channel Four and UA-cam (with a bit of GCN during the cycling season). One thing I don't get is that Siri on an iPhone is terrible, but on Apple TV it works really well, meaning you almost never have to type anything.
My Samsung frame tv does all of this and I don’t need to mess around with multiple remotes and connections. Also the problem with apps is you end up watching adverts apart from iplayer app or paid apps. I have a tv with built in recorder and it records what I want and then I can skip adverts. And I tried Apple subscription 6months ago and it was rubbish, nothing we wanted to watch.
We got rid of SkyTV and replaced with AppleTV, havent looked back. The only down side is the constant harrassment from Sky trying to tempt us to go back. No chance Sky!
The only reason I don’t like the Apple TV is because the controller doesn’t have any programmable shortcut buttons. Like, you press a button and it will open Prime, or Netflix, etc etc. If it has that on the controller is buy.
I have an Apple TV 4K and a Roku 4K. Is the Apple TV nicer than the Roku? Yes. But is it worth 3.5x the price? A resounding no. It’s simply underwhelming for the price. I mean a screensaver??? That’s a reason to pay 3.5x???
It's not just a screensaver, it's the way the ATV optimises the video output of your TV, it's the smoothness and flawless operation, it's the smart assistant, it's the controller hub for lights, video cameras, security devices, heating control, fans and cooling systems, personal contacts, telephone and so much more.
It’s very good but the Achilles heel for all the Apple ecosystem is Siri. It is AWFUL. Half the time it can’t do something, or mishears, or is just useless (search? Use your phone - literally that’s its answer). Siri is so bad that I’ve kept my ATV but got rid of my HomePod minis as they were too unreliable because of it. It’s a Ferrari with a SNES controller for steering.
What’s your favourite thing about the Apple TV?

So I have the Sony A95L. With the new third gen apple 4k tv.. Which do you suggest the best settings on my apple? That ybc.... or rgbi high also do I keep it on sdr 4k not hdr I'm hearing from other people I took off eco took off ambient.. And still any dolby vision is always dark on ant streaming.. No matter what setting I have it on professional standard..
I was tonight years old when I learned of the Find feature in the iPhone remote. Great video!
I have three Apple TV in our home. My wife and son both have their own Apple accounts but we can share each other’s accounts on any of the Apple TV. That gives us a massive movie library!
I aporeciate your sincerity and if you have more money than others not trying to manipulate them into buying something they don't need or want.
Thanks for the kind words. Which new menu?!
How do you change the color behind the icons?
The controller is a bit sharp in the hands they should round it off like the 15pro…
Although I’m using a case for the remote 😊
Probably the best Apple product
Got the Apple TV 4K plus 2 HomePods gen 2 that are paired. Combined with a 65’inch 4K QLED screen makes for an awesome visual and audio experience!
Division bell in spacial audio 🤯 now you’re talkin’ 👌
Apple TV 4K suppport ultrawide monitor?😊
If you have a MacBook, being able to mirror your screen to your TV wirelessly can come in clutch for productivity.
I am waiting for my apple tv to arrive, however I do not have an extra $2,000 for the tv and speakers 😂
Thanks for a great review. I’m a big fan of Apple with most things & there is so much going for Apple TV. However….and call me weird…
but I like to watch some live TV channels and like to review what’s on the main channels each evening. So, there doesn’t appear to be a daily or weekly TV programme guide like on SKY…..is that right? Cheers and thanks again for the review.
I was going through your list of reviews,I did not come across a review for the Technics AZ80’s. Did you do one?
This would be a good one to revisit with the next version of TVOS since it changes the tv app and removes iTunes movies
Its great overall, but the profiles and restrictions part is shockingly bad
for non-apple users, is it still good? (android user, sony x95l user and the ui is really irritating after a few months)
Yes it’s still good. You will need to create an Apple account to have apps and stuff but it’s good. I’ve read comments on non-Apple users purchasing it and has had no issues.
Sound quality is the main reason I keep my Apple TV and Spatial Audio on my AirPod pro 2
You were wrong but now you are right🙂
The Apple TV 4K is awesome device to add to your arsenal, especially if you own other products from Apple.
I'm buying a second one. Love mine.
Silly question maybe but can’t you run the Apple TV to the TV and use earc to your speakers for lossless audio? Why use Bluetooth?
I’m sure you can! Bluetooth, as always, is just convenient - for this setup (everything is plumbed in at home).
You can use eARC but the ATV does not support lossless surround sound codecs such as TrueHD. It supports lossless Apple Music though.
I’m looking at this and ditching sky. I currently have sky multi room I guess I will need 2X Apple TV?
Yep!
I was blown away . When I put Dire Straits Brothers In Arms on my Apple TV With my Dolby Atmos soundbar.
Your tv is mini qled or oled
I was paying close to $200/month for DirecTV both the satilight and streaming versions. How is that compared to SKY?
That’s much more than I was paying!
@@MarkEllisReviews I use Philo now for a live TV service. 80-90 channels and only $25/mth.
100% agree! The Apple TV is now epic
Regards
DSM 🇬🇧
I did think it took a little while to set up, but got the hang of it in the end as I’m an apple product addict the screensavers are fantastic. Is there a way we can choose different settings for screensavers?
Mark , Thanks Much !.......
great device, but i don't like the fact i can't listen to audio from a pair of bt speakers like i can with my Firestick
I agree - it’s a curious decision. I guess the ‘experience’ wouldn’t quite be right for Apple.
You must of made this video before the latest update lol but great video you can now channel hop
Those speakers look nice but damn £1200 is far too much. My Apple TV coming next week. Great video as always.
I wish you all the best for your baby, will it be technological like us? Maybe more, hello Mark a greeting from Italy. Maximum
Always wanted to know what pressing the red button during an F1 race does hahaha
Installed one yesterday, an hour later my wife said “why didn’t we buy it years ago”.
Says it all 🤷♂️
I was desperate to get SKY out of my life with their awful business practices.
Virgins latest box is better than sky Q imo but where is sky sports? TNT sports? Sky movies?
PINK FLOYD MENTIONED
Of course!
I was looking for a review of the Apple TV but it turns out the title was clickbait as this appears to be a speaker advertisement. I’m out.
The only reason I don’t like the Apple TV is because the controller doesn’t have any programmable shortcut buttons.
Like, you press a button and it will open Prime, or Netflix, etc etc.
If it has that on the controller is buy.
Never will beat nvidia shield
You know what i hate about it? That it is Not able to Play iPhone 4K Dolby Vision Videos. It cant handle the codec. Very dissapointing.
Is apple TV pointless if you have android devices
I have an Apple TV 4K and a Roku 4K. Is the Apple TV nicer than the Roku? Yes. But is it worth 3.5x the price? A resounding no. It’s simply underwhelming for the price. I mean a screensaver??? That’s a reason to pay 3.5x???
It's not just a screensaver, it's the way the ATV optimises the video output of your TV, it's the smoothness and flawless operation, it's the smart assistant, it's the controller hub for lights, video cameras, security devices, heating control, fans and cooling systems, personal contacts, telephone and so much more.
And to this day you cannot use the Netflix interactive content with Apple TV, so yes it’s still 100% crap for me and my family.
Agreed.
number 10. yes he has an iphone. that explains the whole video :)
Can you elaborate?
The control is useless on anything longer than one hour,
AppleWorkout
Kodi on a Nvidia Shield Pro is a much better solution and cheaper
I’ve never seen the point of Apple TV. Most of the apps on the system (other than the actual Apple TV app) are available on Smart TVs anyway…..
