Thank you! We actually have an exclusive tutorial from our new business, Laser Design Club ( www.laserdesignclub.com ). We offer courses, tutorials, 10 monthly files, supplier discounts and more (including a lake map tutorial from one of our featured contributors). The tutorial is done mostly through Adobe Illustrator but I will also be doing a lake map tutorial on Inkscape which will be released at the end of September, only included within our membership for Laser Design Club.
I’ve actually been designing the subsequent layers with alignment holes, allowing me to cutout multiple layers from 1 sheet. So with a 10 layer project I only use about 3 sheets on wood.👍🏼
I make maps for a living (2 GIS degrees) and I must say, this is why I got into laser cutting. I wanted to take my map making skills to another level. A legend (map key) showing the depth elevations for each layer (colors) would be a great addition to this. Beautiful work! (and is that some Khruangbin playing in the video?) :)
Hi Erik. Thanks for sharing that with us. So glad you mentioned that. Would you mind sending us an email to 85thandpine@gmail.com? We might have an opportunity for you if you are interested.
@@85thandPine oh wow! Yeah, I'd be glad to email you and see what you have. I'm at work now but will email later this evening or the weekend. I live in North Carolina so I'm EST.
@@85thandPine Hey! I couldn’t find the video where you wanted me to email you and I was really bummed. Finally found it. Are you still interested some pics of the kind of work I do? It’s all hobby stuff right now from laser cutting to 3D printing to custom modding toys. I love to tinker with everything!
Very nice project of the lake map with depth. What works for me, but requires I use more paint since I make a mess with paint is I paint the blank piece first then cut it on the laser this way I don't have to worry about getting paint on the lasered edges. I see you have a steady hand so painting after actually requires the use of less paint. Thanks, Dan
Thanks Dan! Your method is definitely a good way to keep the clean edges! I’ve done that on previous projects but for this one decided not to. Thanks for the input!
Hi Marcie, you can try out openseamap.org which gives you access to maps. But you could also try browsing the lake you want and search for depths (ex: Lake Michigan depth map) and if you find an image showing the depths, you can then trace it in an editing software program like Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator to give you the layers you need.
I love to use snazzymaps, you can set your attributes to as few or as many as you like, along with the contrast for easy tracing! Took me a few tries to get it down but now I make maps all the time!
Hi! We created the design. It’s on our website, 85thandpinedesigns.etsy.com. We used 1/8” birch for all layers except the top, which is 1/8” cherry plywood
@@85thandPine thank you for the answer that’s very helpful. How do you go about making a design like this? I wanted to do one for the lake I grew up on and finding it tricky to get all the clean details you have.

Hello! I joined the laser design club and I’m curious if this tutorial is uploaded yet?
Great design!
Thanks!
Very nice. Did you ever get around to making the tutorial on lake depth maps?

What was the size of the plywood, like width and length?
12x19"
can you advise the color paints you used. Loved you video, thanks!
Hi! I don’t have the exact names of the colors but I used various shades of blue paints from Joann’s called top notch

Any paint that goes over the edge can be fixed with a black sharpie or black paint pen
How would you display a map that thick?
We think it looks nice sitting on a table/countertop since it can support itself. Hanging it on a wall would look good too in my opinion!
Does this program work for Aspire software?
Hi! I'm not familiar with Aspire, but if it accepts SVG, DXF or PDF formats, that is what we use for this particular file.
Id like to know how to create the layers in an svg
I'm hoping to get a video out there on creating an SVG, hopefully sooner than later!
I’d like to make one of an area lake but where did you get the topographical map? Or is that a file you purchased?

I swear I am horrible at painting. I always get paint down along the cut out edge and it looks awful. Great job!
Thank you!
Can I ask how much you would sell a complete product like this for? Also, how do you finish the edges?
I would sell mine for around $125 due to the time it takes. I left the edges raw but you can use a power sander to make them more even!
Material?
Top was 1/8” cherry plywood. All other layers 1/8” birch
Love the video. Could you finish the map with an epoxy?
I don’t see why not!
Hello just curious where you got your layered design from and what wood you used for each layer! Really excited to try this!
