Thank you for your videos Davie. You are truly the Bob Ross of fly tying, and yes, that is a great compliment! Cheers.
Thanks so much Davie! This fly and your pupa like this one are both beautiful. I am 4 of 5 flies into completing a series of caddis patterns making up the life cycle of the caddis in Instagram and tied both of these (pupa and emerger/dry). I've watched this video so many times and finally got to tying one. While there are a few steps, I kept pausing to get the steps and proportions correct and I'm very pleased with the results. I appreciate all you bring to the tying community... so very inspiring! - thanks again and all the best - Freddy
Another Great fly. Davie, I really like how you teach and demonstrate the patterns.
The McPhail Caddis is my favorite tying video, but I think this one tops that one. Masterful!
Great fly!!
Nice and really efficient on the Dordogne River ( body orange variation) . Always beautiful job, congrats 🎣🙏
Awesome fly thank you!
Lovely emerger Davie. My fisher friend Frank McGeehan ties a great version of your pattern. Thanks
Fantastic tye
Beautiful pattern! I will try this one and also with CDC! Thanks for sharing your work!
Lovely tie Davie will knock some of these up at the weekend! 👏
A braw wee beastie Davie. Thanks for the tips. 👍👏🎣
I have always loved your caddis emerger, and I love how the scud back parts the deer hair.
Perfection,
First class Davie, superb workmanship
You see those eyes on a fly you love and you figure things out - I'm surprised there is no burned scorching or anything on those eyes and they are still yellow. I make those eyes for immature damsel flies and my krill fly. So great - and your emerger is probably going to be a great pattern. Thanks for the video and good morning to you. That alternating body rib just blows me away. Such a good job. : )
Не первый год смотрю ваши видео, и не перестаю удивляться вашей фантазией. Спасибо за труд. С наступающим Новым Годом!🎄
One of the top five Caddis pattern of his UA-cam channel. I tied some Caddis like this and was very pleasant fly.
Здравствуйте Davie McPhail ! Спасибо за видео. Интересная мушка. С Наступаюшим Новым Годом!

You make it look so easy! Great looking pattern and great execution. Happy hollidays mr. McPhail.
Love watching and listening to your work. I have used several of your patterns. You are a master.
Thanks Dave for a nice tutorial. For many years I have been looking at your work on fly tying and every time I get new knowledge. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Health to you and your loved ones
Outstanding Davie this is very accomplished tying I’m not sure a could pull this one off but it’s stunning on every level looks like it could do some damage. All the very best pal 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏴🏴🏴
We wish you and your family a happy new year, best health and a lot of nice to remember moments in 2022.
Wow what an info packed tie! Thanks Davie, it’ll be fun to try!
Thanks again Davie!
Superb tying as usual Davie. A great fly and has caught me many a trout.
Stay safe and all the very best to you and yours for next year, cheers, Big Davie
Fantastic fly-I’m sure after a few years I’ll be able to give it a go! 😂😂👍
Awesome job Davie! I will definitely be tying some of these. Thank you for the video.
Totally amazing tying davie as always 👌
Never thought to try and float this fly , looking forward to giving it a try, brilliant as usual cheers Davie.
I find in alpine lakes, letting it soak a little and just roll casting it out so its barely under the surface they hammer it, I usually put some glue under body or uv glue, I actually stopped using this caddis because it felt like I was cheating, I wasn't progressing because it was too easy. They will hammer on this fly all day long and it will get beat up. When I first started I would tie one of these on for a weekend trip and never take it off until it was just to beat up. Doing a nymph dropper with this is and using it as a strike indicator works well too. Great video!
Beautifully done davie! Great job once again and thanks for this tutorial!
Thank you dear master for teaching us. I hooked it up and posted it to you on Instagram
Great pattern Davie
To me, that's a "damp" fly; basically a dry fly that's fished deeper in the film or just sub surface. Thanks, Davie! 👍
Fantastic tying...cant wait to see the attempts of this fly on facebook after lol
Outstanding job as always Davie. Merry Christmas and Happy New year
Beautiful!
Sarbatorii Fericite draga Prietene ,
Amazing fly.
Preciosa, gran video. Me encanta. Saludos....
Enjoy that😊
So great
beautiful to watch.
🔥👍👍👏👏🍾🎆
Happy new year!
Happy new year!!
Very good!!
thanks!
What a marvelously designed fly with some nice surprises in its construction. When looking at the thumbnail of a group of the flies, it looked like a fly with a vinyl rib on a yellow, dubbed body & spread wing created by tying in two clumps of deer hair. Wrong. After watching the video, it’s apparent that what looks like a body of yellow yarn with vinyl ribbing is actually a yellow ribbing over vinyl, & it has wings spread by the vinyl, thus simplifying the wing construction & improving the silhouette. I do wonder about the yellow eyes. All of the adult, emerging and aquatic forms of caddis that I’ve observed or seen photos of have black or dark brown eyes. Are the yellow eyes intended to serve as a form of hot spot?
Hi FlyTyer1948,
I would certainly recommend the eyes on the original McPhail Pupa as well as on this pattern as they do work as a form of hot spot though you could easily colour the eyes with a brown marker as I have done this on other patterns...I am glad you liked the design of the fly..Happy New Year..
All the very best Davie..
First Class! 👌
My attempt didn't look nearly as good as yours Davie 😅, I had a hard job using the Deer Hair so I went to CDC and it did make it a little easier.
👍! Super!
I don't know how I missed this Davie! Is it possible to Marry a perfect fly pattern!?? 😁
I used the original McPhail Caddis as the fly to show how poor my fly tying was drunk vs sober. Wish I could share the comparison pic on this the drunk one really does look drunk especially the eyes.
🇨🇿CZ. 👀👍🏻 super 👍🏻👋🏻
Великолепно 👍👍👍🤝🙋♂️
Hi Davie thanks for all the great videos I learn a lot from you but can I ask why do you use different hooks for your dry flies I mainly use the kamasan B170 on most of your flies so do I have to change my hooks for the rest of your dry flies or can I just continue to use the kamasan B170 thanks
Hi Caroline,
I just have a pile of hooks that I have bought for customers over the years like the ones I used in this video..I do use Kamasan and the B170 is certainly a great dry fly hook. I also like the B160 which I would recommend for this fly due to the wind gape and I use it on many emergers and dry flies..I'm glad you liked the fly and that you enjoy the videos..Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year..
All the very best Davie..
@@DavieMcPhail thanks very much for getting back to me look forward to more of your fly tying videos your brilliant at what you do have a wonderful new year be safe 👍
Another beautiful tie sir. One question? Since iv been learning from you for awile now, thank you,but can you riddle me this...how do you not forget to take the wax off your finger??so far ive found it on my leg and back in the morning usally. Ive just dug a piece out of my pocket and im pretty sure there might be one or two peices stuck on the grand kid lol.
Hi Mike,
I have found pieces of wax in places that no one could imagine. One of the worst places is finding what's left after it has dissolved at the bottom of my cup of tea after drinking it and thinking there's something wrong with the milk..🤮not nice so after nearly 40 years of practise I am still doing it🤣
All the very best Davie..
@@DavieMcPhail Hah!! Happy new year. All the best to you and yours. At least the wax is all natural
Красивая ПУПА)))))))))😊👍
Лупа
Davie quick question if you don’t mind. Is it Scanfil yarn 55% wool 45% nylon that you use for the body of this fly?
Hi Clark,
Yes it is the Scanfil yarn that I use in the video...Happy New Year and all the very best for 2022..
Davie..
Hi Davie I'm having trouble with this one and hope you can help. I've got the white yarn and I've tried dying it Flo-yellow, then tried bright yellow but it doesn't want to take to the yarn. Im using the Veniard dyes and basically followed your dying video am I doing something wrong? Do you use yarn that comes already dyed yellow or do you dye it yourself? If so how?
Hi Clark,
Does the yarn you bought have natural wool/yarn in it as it should take the dye ok.. Here is a link to the yarn that I use for you to see.
www.clothkits.co.uk/products/scanfil-wool-mending-thread
I do dye it though you could use the yarn that is already dyed..
All the very best Davie..
i am struggling with the body i have the scud . I m frustrated Davy
Hi munroheights,
Instead of using the yellow yarn for the body just use your thread or a fine floss as you will find this a bit easier though you will need to add a few more turns, let me know how you get on..
All the very best Davie..
What vice do you use?
Hi Elkhunter63 T,
I use a law vise but unfortunately it's no longer being made, I made a video of it so I have attached a link for you to see..
All the very best Davie
