The NOMOS Tangente Sport Neomatik 42 ref. 580 - A New Type of Sports Watch
A couple of months ago now, NOMOS Glashütte released something not many of us expected. When most of us think about sports watches we think big rotating bezels, thick durable cases, solid casebacks and quite a distinctively recognisable aesthetic.
NOMOS is challenging that traditional look with a new release that honours the distinctive and widely appealing design language of the brand while also being able to perform just as well as any other sports watch. This is the NOMOS Tangente Sport Neomatik and today we have some real hands-on time with the watch. Let’s see if this will be your next watch.
    The new stuff
To kick things off, the first noticeable change is the case which now comes in at 42mm wide. This case with crown guards has been seen before on the likes of the A hoi. Although it’s a larger size (this now makes it the biggest Tagente available today) the thickness remains suitably ‘NOMOS’ at a touch under 11mm. The lug to lug distance is right around 52mm.
If you’re familiar with the Tangente you’ll know the lugs on the piece are incredibly slender and elegant. It’s worth noting however that the watch doesn’t feel delicate or lacking in robustness.
Now let’s move onto the dial which is jam packed full of updates. A thicker, domed sapphire crystal covers the details of this updated dial.
The colour scheme now has a fresh feel thanks to the presence of lume.
The hands are flooded with light blue Superluminova and the hour markers have neat rectangular almost cappuccino coloured plots around the dial which glow green. Wearing the watch in the day, the addition of lume helps to emphasise the symmetry of the dial. The injection of playfulness and casual charm really comes across when wearing this piece.
The crown guards are appropriately proportioned on the side of the case and most importantly, although the crown is pretty small for the watch, it’s still easy to adjust. I personally love how accessible the crown is. I didn’t have any issues at all adjusting the time on the go.
300 metres, 30 atm or 1000ft as NOMOS prefer, is the water resistance rating of choice here. Certainly something you don’t expect when looking at the watch.
This seems like a natural time to flip the watch over, and admire the automatic in house movement from NOMOS.
    The DUW 6101
The DUW 6101 is the first Neomatik caliber to feature a date. It’s not ‘just a date’ however as it’s postitioned right towards the edge of the dial. This is a hugely beneficial NOMOS trait. It means the watches aren’t held back by movement restrictions and they are very much design lead.
There are plenty of little nuances in watch collecting that people go crazy for, and luckily if this sounds you, NOMOS has you covered. With the 6101 you can go forward or back with the date change. Like I said, a small feature, but something that makes a difference if you regularly have to change the date.
    The new NOMOS metal bracelet
This new bracelet for NOMOS has links that can be adjusted by unscrewing two screws around the back of the strap and sliding them in and out. In traditional NOMOS style we find quick releases around the lugs but also on the buckle. This helps make it so easy to adjust this bracelet.
Once on the watch, it really asserts the watches playful, sporty aesthetic. The appeal of a metal bracelet on a NOMOS is something that I very much welcomed.

I'm so glad I found this video! This is probably the best footage I've seen of the watch online. Every photo, especially the ones on the Nomos website look flat and boring, but this completely changes it. The blue luminescent hands, in particular, look striking.

Great vid, enjoying your content. I would consider this watch @38 - 40mm. Current iteration is just too big I feel. Shame, it's an attractive timepiece.

This makes an excellent one-watch collection with diver watch water resistant but with dress watch looks.

Excellent review. My only complaint with this beautiful timepiece, and also with many other watchmakers is that they offer ther products in on (Big) size: always 42mm or more!! Now, some say that it is not the diameter but the lug-to-lug that makes a watch looks big on the wrist, but that is true in just few pieces I tried. In the majority of cases, my wrist looks ridiculous with watches larger than 40mm. It is as if, for exemple, shirt manufacturers thoughts that the best and unique fit for every man was L or XL and everyone should like that. Here, of course, it is an exaggeration just to show the incongruently of the approach. But that is precisely the case with watches in these times. Not everyone has the wrist to pull a large watch or in some cases, the envy to show off. Some thoughtful watchmakers at least, offer their pieces in two sizes, so taking into consideration a good quantity of their potential costumers.

Yes, but you see, it’s all perspective. I prefer 42-44mm. It then seems like most watches are too small for my tastes. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side.

I have the Ahoi Atlantic , I really love this watch and would love the metal strap to go with mine. Mine is Dark blue. I am thinking about getting the Sport because I just love the silver dial, lme and strap

Yeeeeah this is a crazy huge watch for that dial design...
Also, I'm not sure how robust it really is... Nomos' movements (aside from their Alpha) aren't really known for being resilient.

Not exactly a U Boat is it at 42mm but it’s a classy piece. Love the bracelet but hate the lumed indices, why not blue to match the hands? Not keen on the date window either and it upsets the symmetry. Too pricey and the club looks better, shame it’s too small really.
Don’t really think Nomos need a sports watch in the range and can’t see it been a big seller either.

6:10 The dial says 1000 feet, which converts to 300 meters, but you said 200. Which one is correct? Just out of curiosity.

Would be great if you wore the watch on your actual wrist so we can see what it looks like. The articulation makes big watches look better, but that’s not where people wear it.

I think you meant “once on the wrist” instead of “once on the watch” @ 03:14.

I love Nomos. I own one. But, and this is a monumental BUT, Nomos forces you to send your watch back to Germany to be serviced by their staff. 180 dollars return, not including the cost of the service. What a pain in the ass. And this is why I will never buy one again.

I'm sorry to be that guy, but... Pronunciation matters if someone is going see this and pick up a bad habit. Nomos is german, so "Tan-gent-uh". Sure, "Porsch-uh" is also german and we often use "Porsch", but "Porsch-ay"? A small blemish on an otherwise great review

This proportions, size and ugly bracelet makes this even uglier than the Autobahn. Still admire my 36mm Club or the classic 35 or even 38mm Tangente...but this is awful.
