- TVR decided to make a series of purposely-built engines, including the brand's first own V8 powerplant. It was no ordinary engine, but what makes it so different and why did they even bother with it when everybody else advised against it?

There is a mew TVR Griffith in the works too, powered by a Ford Coyote V8, and it was designed by Gordon Murray. It looks just as wild as their previous cars!

Not much into TVR but really love the way they sounds.
They also did a v12 7.0 called the Speed 12.
TVR was so named because Trevor Wilkinson wanted to call the car Trevor but everyone said that would be stupid

The AJP8 engine code sounds very similar to the Jaguar AJ6 straight 6, maybe some similarities

@@anareel4562 no relation other than layout and two initials. As Visio describes AJP was derived from ‘Al, John, Peter’ whereas the AJ6 and subsequently AJ16 were initialed as ‘Advanced Jaguar’. I happen to own both and they are definitely completely unrelated (and yes, even though my AJ16 Jag has been tweaked the TVR motor still kicks it’s ass!)

My neighbor in Fort Lauderdale has a TVR 2500M and he loves it. I've looked at that car, and my '14 Porsche Cayman S is HUGE next to this tiny car!

I remember the first time I saw a TVR on Grand Turismo 2 (I think). It definitely wasn't the easiest to drive but I loved it! There are so many cool cars we don't get in the US.
It was also in GT1, but there was no real point in getting any TVR in GT1 or the aston martin in GT1.
The viper was cheaper than the astons and faster, the TVRs was about the same price but not as powerful.
So the viper could easily dominate the Normal car cup, 10k for qualifying first was so easy and 50k for a win, 5 rounds so that is an easy 50k for quali, 250k for race wins, 100k for championship win.
So guaranteed 400k for using the viper

Maybe make a video on Lotus 900 series engines. They ranged from a 2.0 4cyl up to a 3.5 twin turbo v8. They powered the Esprit and several other British sports cars.
That's a big yes for the 6 cylinder video! An inline 6 is probably my favourite layout. Smooth with lots of torque 👌

An excellent review. Well researched, and all correct. Well done sir... Might want to check out the UA-cam video of the TVR cerbera done by top gear at the time, where they did a mile long drag race with all the other high performance cars of the time.. it absolutely smashes the others!

@LettsReact. As much as I like the TVR Tuscan the reality is that it would probably send me to the poor-house. So for now I'll have to settle with wall posters and screen-savers (do anyone use those anymore?).
Plus, I would be rather weary of driving one on the road before learning to to tame it in the safety of a closed track and an instructor sitting next to me.

I’ve been-in and driven lots of seriously fast cars, but two are burned in my memory as the most memorable, an F40 and that silver Cerbera (reviving at the start of the video).

Great video very well researched, although I do not believe there are any Rover parts in the AJP as it was a bespoke engine. There are a few Ford and GM parts that are unrelated to the engine such as brake servos and relays etc. Ferrari were nicking parts from Fiat at the time too just in case anyone thinks any less of TVR for this.
Anyway I hope to make more content soon on my channel as well, the car has a starter motor issue but slowly getting to the bottom of it. Ironically not a TVR part 😄

One of my core memories is playing GT2 on playstation 1 driving a TVR. They made some large displacement 6 cylinders if I'm not mistaken?
I think it was the Griffith 500 5L V8 and Tuscan speed-6 4L I6. The latter making more hp
The main problem for the V8 was the flywheel, too light for the reliability...
It helped for the higher revs according to the earlier specifications, but main problems haven''t been solved with the next developments because of this statement. Sound was eargasmic but not for too long, unfortunately.
One of my friends had known regular issues on his Cerbera and couldn''t resell it for a long period because of its deserved reputation concerning that problem...
Attention to details was not signiicant too on many points inside that car, he bought a Porsche 928 and is still happy with it even if he needs a road tanker behind him!
Something else to consider, when the cars were new 20 odd years a go. The power and brakes (no abs) could over power the tyres of the time very easily. Putting some modern rubber on gives it the grip it should have always had. The speed 12 would be an interesting story, as many will know that car from gran turismo.
I found a Fiat 125p with this engine swap and it sounds incredible good. That's awesome engine and really good power plant. Cheers mate!

The original Cerbera is such an insanely good looking car, really nothing else like it. I never drove one (or even seen one) but they were definitely tricky to drive in Gran Turismo.

"TVR" is short for the brand's founder, TreVoR Wilkinson.
Probably the production engine , NA , with the most specific torque (122 nm per liter in the cerbera red rose on premium gas).
Please also talk about the tvr i6 , their possible failures..

The problem with TVR is that they spent more time shut down and less time building cars! They seem to have build quality and their ergonomics looked like an afterthought as Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson demonstrated.
I would LOVE to own a Cerbera 4.5 V8 Red Rose (the Red Rose engines were further tuned for extra power!)

AJP V8 borrowed heavily from pro stock Kawasaki Z1/900/1000 cylinder head methodology appropriately scaled up. Lots of issues not mentioned here including crank failure, valvetrain issues, frankly stupid placement of alternator etc etc. It was a brave thing to embark upon but development takes time & therefore costs money, a lot of it! Making something work is the easy part, making it last & not cost the earth is much tougher. The 6 cylinder repeated the formula but instead of copying Kawasaki they decided to copy the Suzuki GSX1100 layout insted complete with finger rockers etc. Equally as under developed & poorly production engineered unfortunately. People like TVR Power have done well over the years fixing the various issues & upgrading where possible to give customers a reliable engine with a warranty!
I miss this engine so much, I had a Cerebra 3.5 V8 I could listen to it idle all day.

Tvr philosofy making relatively simple car, with great looks and even interesting interior. If they only made more lhd cars, if they only would of made these with Bmw reliability... Maybe they wouldnt be Tvr cars anymore. If only big manufacturers could take bit more risks, cars would be much more interesting today.

I like V8s, but prefer the long stroke, slower running ones with a 90° angle.
Bring the 6 and the 12 too, lad! TVR is among the coolest brands in my book.

Even though the Rover V8 put out less power compared to the TVR AJP8 V8 engine, would have actually preferred the former powering the Cerbera like in the Chimaera (if only as an option).

Random fun fact on the video gaming side of things, did you know that the Cerbera V8 is used as the sound of a certain very famous BMW M3 GTR? Yup, *that one* with the blue stripes and the edgy driver.
