    I would agree that all things being equal, the shotgun is the best choice as a civilian defense weapon. In my case, it's not a great choice because there are a lot of tight spots in my house that make a full-sized long gun difficult to maneuver with. If there weren't so many corners and other narrow spaces to contend with, I'd take a pump action shotgun all day long. There was a time during all of the civil unrest that we witnessed during 2020 when I kept an HK53 SBR bedside. Because I like my neighbors, I kept it loaded with frangible 5.56 ammo that the government uses. (Does it bother you when you see police videos where an officer sends dozens of 5.56 rounds downrange in urban areas? Those bullets end up someplace). With a collapsible stock it was very handy for use in confined spaces and packed a big punch, but looking back I have my doubts about that choice. For the moment, I've settle on a S & W R8 8-shot .357. It has rails above and below, so I am able to mount a light under the barrel and have a red dot mounted above. I would rate it as completely reliable, and we know the .357 will stop a fight. I can't imagine ever needing more than eight shots in a home defense scenario, but it does take moon clips so quick reloads are possible. As a bottom line, the best gun for home defense is the one you are most confident with, but for the average person I think your choice is difficult to beat. Just the presence of a shotgun will stop a lot of fights before they ever start, and if you are ever forced to use it, the fight will end quickly.

    G45 / 147 federal with a 23rnd oem Glock mag is my go to . If I didn’t have shoulder pain I would definitely choose the mossberg .

    My wife and I have all 3. If the front door of my home is kicked open in the dead of night I would grab the shotgun, my wife would grab her Glock. I figure we can both be deadly within 3 seconds of hearing the door kicked open. The layout of our house ensures we have much more time than 3 seconds before anyone can get to us.

    All good choices, but I might choose something that everyone in the family would be able to use. A revolver would fit that bill but I would make sure that the wife could handle the caliber. I guess she could have her own and that would work as a backup plan.

    Ok... love your vids.. 'but' this vid is about home defense. in.... my.... opinion most of those scenarios happen at night in the dark with one or two at most 3 home invaders. that means you have to be able to point (not use the sights) in a hurry at maybe a shadow. this eliminates the glock of any kind. they simply do not point well. and in my opinion high capacity is not needed. Shotguns... I have a modified 870 in the corner but... my nightstand gun (notice the word night) is a Colt 1873 clone in 44 spl with my handload of 250 cast and coated SWC there is no distance in my house (or yours most likely) that I need to use the sights If I can't do it with 6 rounds of my 44 spl load then possibly I can't do it at all or... I just grab the shotgun with 6 in the tube and 25 total on board. but.. unless it is light and you have the time to use the sights the glock will get you killed or worse.

      I’m not promoting Glock but you can’t point one. Really if it’s not for you fine .that’s why we have so many choices

      If you shoot the SAA well, I won't argue with your choice, but I wouldn't recommend it for the average person. The .44 Special is a great round, but under stress I don't think I'd want to add the step of cocking the gun prior to each shot. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but early SAAs and some Italian copies aren't safe to carry with a round under the hammer. But again, as a bottom line--if you shoot it well and feel comfortable with it, then it's the best choice for you.

      @@andywindes4968 I wouldn't recommend it for everyone either. I pretty much cock all my DA guns and even my 1911 on the draw. Just habit. first three handguns were a High Standard 22 auto and a SAA and a K38 soo all completely different. Pretty hard to forget to cock the hammer on a SAA or a 1911. On the John Wayne he said it in a movie once... cowboy load... yep. load one skip one load 4 etc... Yeah. Two sources for that.. One is Elmer Keith when he said that with a heavy stirrup it might slip and hit the hammer just right. claimed he knew someone it happened to. My guess is that the hammer was not in the safety notch. The what? Yep. Colt never made a six shooter that was only safe if you loaded 5. In the ads for his guns they said load 6 and use the safety notch. It is the first notch in the hammer and by far the most robust. It holds the firing pin just away from the primer. I have had my back and forths with some pretty well known gun guys and they all want to tell me how weak that notch is. With modern guns with modern steel it would take a very heavy blow landed just right to break the notch/trigger. Seen guys on youtube actually smacking it pretty hard with a hammer only getting it to go off one time and by then about destroying the gun. One engineer said it would take several tons of pressure. It is like the 1911 is unsafe if dropped.. well if dropped absolutely with the muzzle flush with the concrete or something equally hard and even then from 11' I will take my chances (actually a titanium firing pin makes it near impossible) The best thing about the safety notch tho is the visual. You can see the gun in the holster of the guy with you and tell if it is in the safety notch. Drop the hammer on an empty chamber? Oh... Ok.. so we are just gonna have to believe you did that sometime in the past? LOL The best safeties of course are ones you never see like a transfer bar (I broke a couple) or hammer block (my favorite) or the 1911 inertia firing pin. I will admit that they are many times safer if for no other reason than they do not require the person to manipulate anything.

      @@mikecoram397 I learned to shoot handguns in a hurry by simply pointing. Arm/wrist locked and just like pointing your finger. You can do it with a glock with a lot of practice but I don't want to unlearn what I have already learned. today we have realistic bbguns and laser devices notsure if they do the job but they do help to blow off the rust. lol... as a coincidence a friend was visiting and brought his nine mm glock some model or another that is just like the last model and the one before but..... he had brought a laser and a phone app thingie. I had one for my 1911. got around to some hip shooting. The old laser target I have is about a foot square? I can get back about 20' in my living room.... a bit far for hip shooting but about right for point shooting which for me is about mid chest high took some 'shots' facing the target then some sideways one handed. He never hit it once. tried the 1911 and could maybe get half on the target. It takes practice but all the gun game guys are doing it now. 'it is all the rage' Sooo...here is a hint... if you want to carry a glock learn to sight down the barrel. They are pretty blocky and it is fairly easy to do so. (unless the dog has been chewing on it) I don't think any of the gun game guys use the sights for fast and close range The average number of rounds used in gunfights has gone up a lot. probly do to lack of training

    Do you really believe you will need to breach doors in your own home? And do you also believe that a 3 inch magnum buckshot is an appropriate breaching round?

    • @TerryBenton
      @TerryBenton  Місяць тому

      @thomasholohan4090 people truly do need to pay attention. Yes a 3 in buck shot is an excellent round for breaching a door. I suppose everyone is going to direct everything to make themselves feel better. Use your 9mm pistol. I am sure it is far superior to what e wryone else chooses. Thanks for the comment

      @@TerryBenton (1) The military does not use buckshot for breaching. likely because that will result in .33 cal lead balls going in all directions. They use something else: "The US military M1030 breaching round is a 12-gauge, 2+3⁄4-inch (70 mm) shell that uses a 40-gram (1.4 oz) projectile made of powdered steel, bound with wax"
      (2) I never mentioned a 9mm pistol, in fact I never mentioned any particular firearm at all. You are correct that "people truly do need to pay attention".
