Shirley Ellis was still alive at the time, but I remember on my first day of school, my kindergarten teacher singing this song (and playing her guitar) using the names of all the kids. This was in the mid-90s and is one of the few positive memories I have of that teacher, as she had very poor control of the class and was out sick for a good portion of the school year (the substitute they got for her was much better). Shirley was also my grandma's name, and she and my grandpa gave me a CD with a bunch of novelty songs, including the Name Game (not sure if they knew the singer was named Shirley) as well as "Surfin' Bird", which most younger folks associate with Family Guy. So yeah, this song will withstand the test of time.
I knew this song as a kid (even tho I’m only a very young 55 🤣) & could put any name into it still today. Love it! Great song, Great memories! Has my sister’s name in it too, Marsha, lol. Never watched American Horror Story but it’s probably good, just not into horror these days. ✌🏻Jessica Lange knew it from her childhood for sure!
When I listen to this I can just sweep away all the trials of childhood and just smile broadly as heck and sing along. This is a GREAT song. Makes me glad I was born in that era.
LOL I'm a hardcore rap and metal fan yet I've added this and Dominique to my play list thanks to American Horror Story. Whoever selected the music for that show is fucking genius!
David Thomas Spoiler heck all it took was a slight revisit to Briarcliff during the latest season to get the two songs from that season stuck back in my head again
My friends and I used to love singing this song when I was young. We used to sing it with words that would come out dirty, like ‘Chuck’. Still catch myself doing it these days too.
you should edit the year to 2022. love those nonsense comments mentioning the year LMAO the date of the post it's showed anyway on details but people feel that it's cool mentioning the year lol like anyone cares
My mind is blown that some of you people never heard of this song until American Horror Story? It's as ingrained in culture as the Charlie Brown theme or America the Beautiful. Or that ting tang walla walla bing bang song. Yikes.
It really is ingrained in american culture.... Even before I knew iut was a song I knew "bonanna fanna fo fanna".... and like... doing the game with names.... and her clap pat song is the same thing... it literally describes that little clapping game everyone does...
+Carmen Kunz true. The Americans always have to be the centre of the world and their minds are blown if the rest of the world doesn't know everything there is to know bout the country
This and the AHS version always gets in my head and then it's 3 hours singing it to myself. Even when I wake up in the middle of the night. I try to do this song with my boyfriend's name and our friends but I have such a hard time cause I've only listened to this and AHS cover lol
I learned this song originally from a rap--esque short that would play between cartoons and commercials on Nick Jr. in the '90s and also was re-taught it later at school in third or fourth grade in 2000 or 2001. I had no idea where it originally came from, but tonight I randomly thought of it and got curious about it's origin. In retrospect, it really is a fun way to teach children English consonant pronunciation. I also loved joking with my classmates that it would be funny if one of us was named "Tucker" and watching them slowly figure out why that was funny by doing the name game in their heads. It's also cool to see that it originated with this 60s song because I've heard of Shirley Ellis but had no idea that this was originally a pop song popularised by her.
Loved this song so much from a little girl when I first heard it in the 60's!!! I've been singing it every since, except don't use the name Buck or Huck or anything with a "UCK" in it!! I learned that the hard way 🤕
I sing this to my chickens. Well, most of them. Kind of challenging when their names have 3 syllables. This song came out when I was 8 and I have never forgotten it.
I was impressed how Ryan Murphy incorporated his musical experience with AHS. Jessica Lange was awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would've have never found music like this. Shows are about experiences new things that you would have never imagined before. Just enjoy it and don't think too much about it and have fun.
I am in awe of the talent and genius involved with making American Horror Story: Asylum. What a scene and what an episode. This is so much more than a "mini-series." It is an EXPERIENCE, and an unforgettable one.
I would say that the majority of kids in the USA learned this song by heart in 1965 and still remember it today. I certainly do. And it's kind of odd to think of how many people discovered it for the first time when Jessica Lange sang it, and are still hearing it for the first time from the UA-cam clips.
I have heard my mother play the name game with my name my entire life. She didn't even know where it was from. Glad I found this, I'm gonna remember it for a long time. Might want to pass it down if I ever have kids myself.
haha I haven't heard this song in decades, yet, I heard it so much as a teenager, I still remember how to do this. And sometimes, during my life, a few times a year, I would sing then "name game part out loud"... What fun we had...how sad things are now...But, all I have to do is close my eyes, and sing this song...and go back in time...

Come on ev'rybody, I say now let's play a game
I betcha I can make a rhyme out of anybody's name
The first letter of the name
I treat it like it wasn't there
But a "B" or an "F" or an "M" will appear
And then I say "Bo" add a "B" then I say the name
Then "Bo-na-na fanna" and "fo"
And then I say the name again with an ""f" very plain
Then "fee fi" and a "mo"
And then I say the name again with an "M" this time
And there isn't any name that I can't rhyme
Arnold! Arnold, Arnold bo-bar-nold
Bo-na-na, fanna fo-far-nold
Fee fi m-mar-mold. Arnold!
But if the first two letters are ever the same
Crop them both, then say the name
Like Bob, Bob, drop the "B's", Bo-ob
Or Fred, Fred, drop the "F's", Fo-red
Or Mary, Mary, drop the "M's", Mo-ary
That's the only rule that is contrary
And then I say "Bo" add a "B" then I say the name
Then "Bo-na-na fanna" and "fo"
And then I say the name again with an ""f" very plain
Then "fee fi" and a "mo"
And then I say the name again with an "M" this time
And there isn't any name that I can't rhyme
Say Tony, Tony, bo-bo-ney
Bo-na-na fanna, fo-fo-ney
Fee fi mo-mo-ney, Tony!
Let's do Billy!
Billy, Billy, bo-gil-ly, bo-na-na
Fanna, fo-fil-ly,
Fee fi mo-mil-ly, Billy!
Let's do Marsha!
Marsha, Marsha, bo-bar-sha

Genevieve Grande Never heard of American Horror Story. I just remembered the song from the 1950s.
I hope this song withstands the tests of time in order to make it to future generations. Singing this song and playing the name game with my mom was one of my happiest memories as a child
As a teacher, I tried it with my 1st grade class. They had fun tripping over the words and rhyming! A hoot! Best Language Arts time ever!!
