  • In this video I am sharing my minimalistic and basic live looping setup that I use for my live looping videos. I also talk about my mindset when creating different parts for loops and how to come up with more interesting arrangements for your looping songs.
    Tools that I use:
    DAW - Ableton Live 11
    Looper Pedal - TC Electronics Ditto Looper
    Midi Keyboard - Arturia Minilab Mkii

    Great video, I love your sound!
    I am hoping to setup a live looping setup, with a guitar, midi keyboard, and an ipad.
    How do you manage pedals / effects? Is that in the same software that the midi keyboard is using?
    Do you still use a pedal board?
    Do you use a USB interface? Which do you recommend?
    If you were going to play live, do you send your output to an amplifier? Or would you recommend something else?
    Have you experimented with foot switches to start and stop loops?
    Sorry for all of my questions, even if you dont answer, I appreciate your channel!

      Hey man, I appreciate your comment.
      Firstly, I don't use ipad, but I'm sure it's somewhat and somehow transferable between laptop and a tablet.
      In terms of effects/pedals, it depends on what sound I am going for. I usually would have the pedalboard running into the interface/amp but use the effects sparringly as I like having more flexibility later in post, unless it's overdrive, that I usually would use during the 'performance'.
      But you can just have guitar going into the interface and add effects in the software.
      In terms of audio interfaces, I would figure out my needs, mainly how many channels/inputs I am planning on using - am I going to sing, play guitar, synths all at the same time, all of which will potentially require their own channel/input.
      I used to use Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which has 2 channels. Works fine, but in some of my looping videos you can see me unplugging jack leads from one instrument to the other in the middle of live looping, which is doable, just requires some premeditation. Since then I moved to RME UCXii audio interface, which is overkill for this purpose, yet removes that issue altogether - you DO NOT need this specific interface for live looping. Scarlett series are a good deal, something like newer generation 2i2 or bigger 4i4 shall satisfy these needs. I would first define how many inputs I need and go from there.
      If I were to play this live, I can go either way. For ease of logistics I could go just guitar, midi keyboard, laptop and interface, but I prefer playing through the amp (that connects to the interface). In order for your audience/you to hear this, you may need some speakers, pa system. I would not send the output from my laptop to my amp, unless that's the only option.
      I haven't used it much myself, but I've seen people use the keyboard pedals (the ones that are only on and off), to trigger the recording of the loop. It's useful if you have to play a tricky part and need both hands ready.
      Hope this essay didn't make you sleepy and was somewhat helpful haha
      Cheers!

    I'm desperately trying to find a not too expensive, basic looper for looping instruments such as flutes and voice etc. So I'm guessing I would need a looper with a mic input? I don't need any other gadgets as I'm not computer Savvy at all, I really just want a looper I can plug into an amp, connect a mic and start looping various instruments.

    This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing.
    I could not fully understand how you used the pad button to record to the clip, could you please elaborate more? I am trying to replicate the same with my Keylab49 Essential but don't have the pad button equivalent.

      Hey, appreciate you being here ! Thanks a lot.
      In regards to the Pad, basically what it does it allows to use another (digital) row of pads. Minilab only has 8 physical pads, however, if I press the pad button on the top of the keyboard it gives me access to tabs from 9 to 16, even though they are the same 8 pads on the actual keyboard. Because of this, I assigned the pads from 9 to 16 to arm the tracks on my Ableton Live Project. So when I am live looping, I can press the PAD button, then press, let's say, pad 9 (which on the keyboard would be the first pad (1/9), and then press the PAD on the top again, which brings me back to the first row of pads (1-8) and press that same pad (1/9), I can start recording on that track that the pad is assigned to. I hope this makes sense.
      I'm not sure how that would translate to your Keylab49 keyboard, but there should be a similar way to assign the buttons or ability to use some kind of an Ableton template.

      Could you walk me the minilab setup? I missing something in the setup. I have the midi app and have set up the midi map in ableton. I can get the pad to select the track (column) but can't get the arm to work.

    Excelent video man! I'd like to create my songs with Boss rc 500 looper to arm Melody and drums and akai mini keyboard with ableton to add shynths, atmosphere elements etc, it's posible with this equipment? Regretings from Spain

    • @ovidiuspine
      @ovidiuspine  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Alfredo ! You rsetup sounds cool ! From what I've seen, rc 500 has 2 tracks, or 2 channels. I would say try experimenting with the output of your interface going straight into a mic line (might need to adjust levels etc.) and use the jack input for your guitar. If it's all coming from ableton, let's say you run your guitar through ableton effects or amp simulations, then go to direct input of the RC 500, and you still have mic input if you want to add some singing or live recorded percussions through a mic. Hope this helps. :)

      @@ovidiuspine I think I got It, sound interface would be the principal element and the guitar conect to it since if I add some effect firstly, looper should be in the final route if I want to loop that things with the effects

    hey! Thanks for your video :) I have a question that you may know the answer. I have the same pedal as you but I have an AKAI keyboard. My problem is basically that, as the guitar pedal is not connected to the same program (Ableton) as the keyboard, if I make a loop with the guitar and then I want to follow it with a rhythm in the midi, it sounds out of sync, either by milliseconds, and it gets more and more out of sync. Should I connect my Ditto looper to Ableton, as well as the midi, to make it sound out of sync? Thanks!!!

    • @ovidiuspine
      @ovidiuspine  2 роки тому

      Hey Elena, I've just found your comment. For this exact reason I don't mix the Ditto looper with Ableton. I personally haven't found a way to sync these 2 up. A good alternative would me to use the in-built Ableton Looper, might need to use something to trigger it - maybe a midi keyboard pedal or something similar (will need to map it to do that though). I'm sure bigger loopers like Boss RC series will have some sort of way of syncing with the program, but I'm afraid I'm not the person to ask.

      That sucks...I would say, if you'd like to do some looping as well as production, Ableton is the way to go.
