- So recently myself and @AndreaSilvestro had a chance to visit the Martin guitar factory and museum and they had a guitar that was owned by both KURT COBAIN AND ELLIOTT SMITH!!
Elliott is the reason I play guitar and it was actually a surreal experience to have this happen. They also ended up giving me one of their new Streetmaster acoustics, so check it out with this affiliate link:

A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his UA-cam channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Hi guys. Just wanted to clarify a couple things. First off, Elliott never owned this guitar. However, he played it. A lot.
I had the good fortune to have him as one of my best friends, and he was like a little brother to me. I had this Martin at the time. It was around
1995. This guitar was OLD (even then), and it was quirky, and absolutely AWESOME. Elliott loved this old beast, as did everyone who
ever met it and played it. In 1991, this guitar was gifted to Kurt by me, and he adored it. I wanted him to keep it, play it, love it, etc.
It's hard to believe, but he was BROKE back then, and I knew how much he loved this guitar, and I was in the market for a D-28 .
So, I gave it to him. Then, Courtney Love came into the picture, and made him give it back. However, and as most of us know,
he DID eventually get a D-18 (his was a 1959), and this one, is a 1953. The Cobain Martin (featured on the MTV acoustic), was the
1959, and to date, it is the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction 6 Million dollars. But, it was THIS guitar that began Kurt on his
journey to own his own Martin. This 53 that Kurt and I called "Grandpa", was most likely the first Martin Kurt ever took seriously, and
first Martin he ever played. It was such a special (magical) guitar. The fact that it was played by Elliott (who of course loved Nirvana),
and adored and owned, and played by Kurt.....is incredible. And yes, it resides in Nazareth PA now, in the place it was born nearly 70 years ago.
You guys should all go play it. It is a proud warrior veteran that sits proudly in it's old home, and welcomes people to sit it on their knee
and dream. xx
The "whisper game". omg. Or, back in the day, they would call it the "telephone" game. IF these people (who made this video), had done due diligence, they would have known the provenance prior to stating such facts that are -sort of "untrue". That said, this guitar was absolutely beloved by both. So, there's that. Oh, and
it was also played by Shawn Colvin, who put my heart back together after Kurt and Courtney Breaking it...Shawn AND JONI MITCHELL (who I stayed with at
Richard Thompston AND Joni's home), put my heart back together. Kurt was NOT a big deal yet, and Joni Mitchell and Shawn Colvin helped me
out of that entire shitty time when Courtney got the claws in. -Just sayin. What a guitar. Magical. Absolute TRUE story. I mean, if you get dumped by Kurt (not a
rock star YET) cause Courtney, well then, the BEST people to hang out with, are JONI and Shawn, and that is EXACTLY what happened. When Joni Mitchell herself
gives you the "there, there, no guy is worth this", well then, you're a lucky girl. I stayed at Joni's house, drifting in Joni's pool, crying, and
going to Spago every night with her..........and my bestie Shawn telling me, "butt head isn't worth it"....chin up champ, and all that. Holy shit.......I have been a lucky girl. And once again,
this guitar is a magical eldery warrior that was ABSOLUTELY responsible of turning Kurt on to the Mighty D-18's of the 1950's...... xx
Also, if any of you guys want to talk about "timelines" of "ownership" (as if that shit matters), Kurt ONLY OWNED the 59 D-18 for about 6 months
prior to his death. The significance (like the sweater, etc), is in the visible and audible clips of him playing it on the Unplugged Mtv show.
BUT, as far as the provenance of the "59" itself, that guitar was only owned for a few months, and I doubt many songs were written on it, etc.
But THIS MARTIN (this 1953 Grandpa) WAS ABSOLUTELY the guitar HE fell in LOVE with, and prior to the Courtney shit, WOULD have kept.
So, instead, a little while later....he found the weirdo 1959 D-18 E. (and as any of you Martin people know, THAT guitar is a basket case
in itself that NOT a LOT of people would ever want.) But Kurt did. Cause he, himself, WAS an underdog....And a little bit of a basket case.
And the 59 D-18 E was right up his weirdo alley. :) haha. xx
Oh, and sidenote sidenote about Elliott......Oh man. He adored those Big Yamaha's....Big, Bold, Cheap, and delivered.
One of the FIRST things I noticed about Elliott the first time I saw him (which was the first time I ever heard him or his music)
which was at the Elvis Room ? In Seattle opening for Slim's band at the time? Witchypoo maybe? Was....I thought to myself...
"how is he making that little crappy guitar sound soooo good"?? It might have been the El-Domino. Not sure. But it was a crappy
guitar (no martin), and I was just amazed. It was then and there I learned...It's NOT the guitar, it is ALWAYS the player. omfg.
If anyone ever deserved a Martin, etc, it was Elliott. But Elliott gave no fuck.... He just loved those big old Yamaha's. Of course he loved this Martin (grandpa)
and it was our "go to" at the end of nights in streets and hotels, etc, But on stage, he wanted the big sound of the Yamaha's against
his sweet sweet voice. I miss him and Kurt Sooo much. And THIS guitar might not have been "owned" per sey by Elliott, but
he played it, loved it, great memories of him singing and playing were made on it .....and Kurt too. And Shawn. And it was there on my
knee when I cried into Joni Mitchell's shoulder about a guy named Kurt (who was just a guy in a new rock band called Nirvana) who had
recenty broken my heart. Guitars are magic.
@@MaryLouLord1 Ms.Lord, may I ask do you have any suspicion on Mr.Smith's sudden death? Do you actually believe someone can stab his own chest couple of times to end life?
Also, do you know what Mr.Smith was doing when he's not doing shows? Did he just stay in his house hanging around and making music or occasionally go to the pub and drink beer? Or was he doing something else on his free time?
@@MaryLouLord1 Yeah - when he said it was elliott's guitar I was expecting the fg-180 or other yamaha. I've only seen a few videos of him playing a martin live. Those yamahas are still king, and Elliott is the reason I own two. Loud with both great bass and mids and cheaper than most without losing the quality.
A guitar that was owned and played by Eilliot Smith & Kurt Cobain? Wtf! Amazing.
🎆🎉
Wow how did I not know that. That's crazy
Meh I don't believe that. Probably some folk tell that someone made up but you never know cool no matter what
@@joshuaadams5295It's true.
@@joshuaadams5295it is true.
Mary Lou doesn't even get a mention wowwww
Cobain and Elliott both owned it? I’d defend that guitar to the death!
Well good morning! I’m loving these Martin Guitar videos y’all. Great song today, loved hearing Andrea’s vocals so early today.
thanks for listening! means a lot
well that's very interesting. I didn't know Elliott Smith played a guitar that belonged to Kurt Cobain
Liked soft and warm sound of this guitar) performance is exceptional! Vocal is very soulful, luved! Keep it up, guys!
That was very nice. Thanks for sharing! 🙏👏
Wow. I'm speechless too. What an honor, Sean, to play that guitar.
I was so nervous!
Great guitar, playing, and vocals. Love it!
Thanks so much Michael!
Marie Lou Lord was probably the original owner of that gutiar. She made some great music too! Check out her youtube channel for some really great old footage of Elliott performing.
Damn. Feels like this is like the Ultimate Guitar. Owned by two legends. This is probably the Guitar that Mary Lou Lord owned originally. She made some music together with Elliott in the late 90s and was for a brief time in a relationship with Kurt right before he became famous so it would make sense that it was hers.
Pretty wild story behind that guitar
Its hers pretty sure she has a pic of it from ‘91 on her instagram
Very nice!! Thanks for sharing
Oh my GOSH! I now want to go to the Martin Factory and play the Guitar that Sean Daniels played! Plus, it was also owned by a couple other guys that Sean knows.
What an incredible experience that must've been, good for you Sean! 😁
Thanks man!
Wonderful! This has to be my favorite installment of your channel. Andrea’s voice is dreamy.
awh thanks :)
Am I right in saying that the mysterious woman in question must be Mary Lou Lord? All the details match up. If so, she’s a fantastic artist in her own right. She was actually the first to record and release I Figured You Out, a song Elliott gave her because he decided it sounded too much like the Eagles, lol. She’s done some beautiful covers like Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” and some equally beautiful originals, like “Jingle Jangle Morning,” which is actually about Kurt. I highly recommend people check her stuff out.
I am a little bit of a contrarian myself, but this has to be the coolest video I have seen on your channel. Thanks for posting and congratulations for having this experience!
Ms. Yin & Mr. Yang..✌🏼.. a beautiful mix,you two…👍🏼❤️… and those GUITARS…!!!! Wow..!
Guess I'll be booking my tour of the Martin Factory sometime soon - I'll get to play this guitar too... right?
Didn‘t watch a lot of videos on your channel lately - for this one I‘ll be a fan boy forever.
I still can’t believe I got to play that guitar
@@seandaniel23 But you did! Good for you! And you played „Say Yes“ on it. Fantastic!
Subbed! This would be my exact reaction to meeting Elliott's guitar. Awesome homage to the GOAT!
Yesh! He's my all time fave
Man, I am so genuinely envious of you.
that guitar didn’t belong to either of them. it belonged to Mary Lou Lord & they just played it.
I like these Martin videos I hope there’s more
more to come!
That guitar sounds amazing!
I don't live too far from the Martin museum, definitely going there. Do you know what happened to his fg-180?
how the hell can watchin drea run in the rain be so entertaining, but it is, great play by play Sean. Love you you 2 and love the vlogs. So miss boss bakes and muppets. I understand just not enough
hours in the day..oh loved the song too
Damn, that was great !
Great voice!
Sweet playing and what a voice! And That Wig is back.
Don’t be so ashamed about the hair loss.
I mean those songs are great, but please don’t not be your real self.
We will still love you without the wig!
Keep wiggin on!
Just got a fresh wig cut in the newer vids!
That’s so sick! I hope my acoustic gets worn like that. Elliotts definitely my favorite songwriter
He seems like the guy who punches you in the face for no reason, then apollogizes and means it, but hits you right again.
That really is pretty cool!
Incredible ❤
I am glad you have Andrea there to keep you straight. Lol 😂 Great stuff Martin is the best imo. What a experience test driving those guitars
Relax, breathe, have fun...Thx
The way that he is playing between the bars, what are the tabs for that? If someone could tell me that would be great. I really like the way he is playing it
Sounded great. Elliotts music is something special...
Best video I've seen in years on here if not ever. Elliott will forever be the king and the 5th Beatle. I would probably cry if I had the chance to play his guitar haha (:
I was shaking SO bad holding it
what a big adventure
Homegirl can SING! Love you both, thanks for all you do!
Thanks so much Matt!
That's amazing
What a special video this is. Thank you Sean and Andrea for giving us this beautiful gift, and thank you Martin for allowing them to do it!!!
thanks for listening!
Cobain was a lefty i guess he must have did the Hendrix string change to play that priceless guitar
That would explain all the wear above the sound hole.
U guys could link a video of Elliott playing the guitar if there is one.
sick guitar!
So… which model was it??
literally insane
You two are amazing!!!
I'm so shook
crazy right?!
That guitar has had a life (and it's cooler than any of us)
great video but I thought Elliot generally played that Yamaha I see in most UA-cam videos
Yes, but he had other guitars. On Roman Candle he was playing Le Domino for example. Here is some info about the Martin:
"I had the amazingly good fortune to meet another incredibly talented songwriter named Elliott Smith. He set a new bar for music and I truly believe him to be one of the great voices of our generation. In 1995 I took Elliott out on his first tour as my opening act. I adored his songs and our friendship ran deep. Although our relationship was strictly platonic, it was Elliott who helped me fill the void after the loss of Kurt. On both of the tours that Elliott and I subsequently did together, it was the Martin that we would end up playing into the wee hours of the morning in our hotel room…I believe that "Grandpa" is the ONLY instrument in the world that was played, adored and loved by both Kurt Cobain AND Elliott Smith. It was also played on occasion by Shawn Colvin and of course, me. In 2003, Elliott died and this completely broke my heart…It was around this time that I began to release myself from the whole world of music as I knew it and dedicate myself to my young daughter Annabelle. The Martin was getting little attention, and by this point it held memories that I wanted to let go of. It had served me well and I wanted to give it a new lease on life. It needed to be played, so in 2004 I sold it to a guitar dealer and that was that. A few years later I got a letter from someone who was about to purchase the guitar and wanted to know if everything was on the “up and up.” I am happy to say that the guitar Kurt Cobain called “Grandpa” and Elliott Smith called “Gramps” now resides in the permanent collection of Make’n Music in Chicago, IL. I am told it is played regularly and adored by many a visitor who wants to hear the “stories.” On special occasions it is even made available to other musicians for purposes of inspiration and to use on recordings. I am glad to have known it, served it well, and to have shared in the memories this wonderful guitar possesses. There you go…the story of “Grandpa.” Mary Lou Lord
@@twilko thank you for this!
Did Cobain restring this guitar to point the other way?
Yep, and turned the nut around where the head met the neck to accommodate the differing string positions
You could see Kurt’s mark on it.. all the pick scratches on the opposite end
That's so cool. Great performances too guys.
It’s cool, but that’s not the Yamaha fg180 red label that he played regularly. I actually don’t know if he recorded any music on the Martin, he only played with it live, i could be wrong. Nobody knows where the Yamaha is anyway.
That’s crazy! Elliott Smith is probably my favorite musician ever.
I dont think you’re the only one shook.
I noticed that I was watching this video with a big smile on my face, im stunned myself
Love you Elliott
He's the best ever.
How can you hold it so casually
Courtney Love impression was spot on
Magical moments! Cheers Sean and Andrea!!
i thought Elliott Smith's main acoustic guitar was the Yamaha Red Label FG180?
It is... Elliott like, borrowed this guitar for a brief period. Everything on every Elliott Smith record is is red label Yamaha.
Elliott always played a yamaha fg180 live. Ive never seen him play any other acoustic guitar live
Mary Lou Lord

Hi guys. Just wanted to clarify a couple things. First off, Elliott never owned this guitar. However, he played it. A lot.
I had the good fortune to have him as one of my best friends, and he was like a little brother to me. I had this Martin at the time.
This is so cool! How did you manage to keep it together?? Seeing you guys perform those songs on that guitar has me a little emotional ngl
What are you talking about!!!! This is the coolest thing ever!!!!
The censored version of say yes made me laugh
I'm to old to be a fan boy but I remember when I was your age Sean, Kareem Abdul Jabbar showed up to the play ground where I used to hang. He didn't come to play, he came because we were stalking and ringing his door bell when he was going to Harvard. He got out of his car, (Brown Mercedes) And he said "could you guys please stop ringing my door bell. We were dumb struck and no one said a word. So I get it. Great video.

😄
wish it was still being played everywhere instead of being locked in a dark museum
Nice singing
I would murder to play this guitar
i've never been this amount of jealous in my whole life. and just by reading the title🤧
When you said that the guitar was not just Elliott Smith’s but ALSO Kurt Cobain’s, I audibly said “WHAT??”
I think elliott Was playing a Yamaha FG 180 Red Label??? 🤷♂️
He played a lot guitars
• Martin in the first years
• Le Domino in Roman Candle
• Yamaha FG 180 most of the time
• Gibson J45 (Jon Brian show if I remembered well)
• Yamaha FG 402
• And various electrics (Gibson ES 335, Epiphone Crestwood, etc)
Playing the angels guitar
No the fuck they did not….. Holy shit, dude. I wish I would’ve seen this when you posted it.
I’m so happy for you, genuinely, brethren. Were the same John Pearse strings on it from the last time he played it? You lucky dog. Xo
Dude I know! Prob the coolest UA-cam-related moment I’ve had
@@seandaniel23 i wonder if the girl mentioned was Mary Lou Lord as I’ve heard stories. It had to be a surreal moment for you to play the same songs he had played on it. That’s just too raw. Great stuff. Super jelly. lol

He played a Yamaha didn't he?
Le Domino, Gibsons and Martin too, but most of the time Yamaha FG 180
that guitar sounds great, and of cause Andrea voice is beautiful
ty Max!
Doing the classic Taylor Hawkins leg spread..........very rock & roll. 🤘🤣
Its not every day one gets to play the instrument(s) of their musical heroes ... also not every day Sean is at a loss for words 😉
Well done, Sean; and well done Andrea!
Thank you! 🙏🤍💛🤍🙏
ty :)
He probably rarely ever used that guitar if he even used it at all. He used a Yamaha and a gibson es
It was probably more sentimental to him because it was given to him by Mary Lou lord.
Hold on. Kurt gives it back, and then it just ends up with Elliott? What happened between? Did he get it from that same girl? Did Kurt and Elliott both know her? Did Elliot know he was playing Kurts guitar? Was this before or after Kurt's death? Were either famous yet? That just seems un-Elliott-like to knowingly play some other famous contemporary's guitar. I need more info lol
Edit: I caught the story in the comments. Mary Lou Lord. Sounds like it wasn't exactly his but he played it touring with her. Still. Crazy
The Short(er) version: As Mary Lou Lord points out, a Yamaha red label FG-180 was his main guitar...it's on 90%+ of the live recordings/videos. The people who sold his Le Domino claimed he used it on the majority of Elliott Smith and Roman Candle, but except for a couple of songs and maybe some doubled parts I mostly hear a dreadnought. I assume his family has the Yamaha. Martin (plus probably a dozen clickbait vids in addition to this one) calling this "Elliott Smith's Guitar" is kind of sad since one of the great marvels of Elliot Smith's music is that he made most of it using gear he bought long before anyone had heard of him.
That girl Kurt was dating was Mary Lou Lord by the way. She was a wonderful musician in her own right. MUCH better than Courtney Love.
Sean, there is no shame in being bailed out by Andrea when you are in Martin Nirvana.
Too bad he used a Yamaha FG-180 red label like 99% of the time lol
Didn’t Misty make fun of these women trying to sound like Sarah Vaughn? Jesus.
Picking up Elliott Smith's guitar and playing it with a pick is very lame.
That isn’t Elliott’s guitar kids.
Not to be a complete Pedant, but it is shaken, not shook.
Ugh, most kids these days always say shook. I always hear "I'm shook", sure it's not the right proper English but that's what ppl are saying nowadays especially with the millennials. Just as much as they say "that's sus" instead of saying suspicious.
@@jamesvancam It's slang.
@@ClankBoomSteam right, exactly it's just that some ppl dont know and wanna correct with proper English which is understandable and I dont blame him at all.
If it was sticky, the stickiness would've once been inside the body of Elliot Smith. I suppose that needs to be balanced against the fact that it's the very part of one's body that get sent down shower drains, deliberately, so is not that many steps removed (in kind) from say a urine sample of his that some fan in some path lab just couldn't throw away. Just a thought. :-)
… huh…?
@@joeurbanowski321 Sebum.
Soap saponifies it, and the resulting ligands dissolve easily in water. With them go the little bits of filth that accumulate in the sebum over a normal day.
Would have been cooler if it was his Yamaha. He’s not known for a Martin. Odd.
