Love the message in this video. Really brings home the destructiveness of the media and their sense of beauty. The poor girl was beautiful to begin with, but is "not beautiful enough" according the the standards of "those in the know" . Thus she succumbs to the demons of vanity, lust, and jealousy in order to be recognized as beautiful. These internal demons are shown as external projections in the video (Ie; she becomes a literal demon). Her shape shifting is reminiscent of all the things that people go through in order to be accepted as being "beautiful" (first absorption is like plastic surgery, second absorption is working out, third absorption is anorexia). Even with her power, she always runs into someone with a certain feature that is better than hers, thus she is constantly absorbing people until she looks more alien than human. She never realizes that it was her imperfections that made her beautiful in the first place. Eventually, like many people that are stuck in the cycle of beauty in the supermodel business, the constant strain she puts on herself is too great and her body eventually gives out. Maybe you can't abolish it but you can reform it. Women of every shape, race, weight, and look should be represented in the industry. There shouldn't be a "gold standard" of beauty.
I like to believe it has a double meaning along with what you said about seeing this in your friends and rather than helping sway them away from it and keeping them confident in themselves you enable it and follow them blindly to keep them happy but in the wrong ways.

However, look more closely at the dress she's wearing the poem on the cover art of supermodel is written on the dress. Then at 4:05 you see her throwing up the dress with all the cameras looking at her and taking picture of her, in technicality she's throwing up the poem. Just like in the cover art of their album. The video itself is so creatively powerful. It shows that when you conform to society you hurt yourself more than anyone else because you become so fixated on being this ideal of beautiful or ideal or a "supermodel" that you start to forget the whole idea of what it is to be living. 10 out of 10 for this video. This is why I love foster the people, they always have deeper meanings to everything they do. Anything they write or touch or put their minds into is golden.
They are so talented and creative. A lot of their music sounds like it could be from a different band. It's a shame that "pumped up kicks" is the only song they have with over 100,000,000 views. Such good music
For those of you who don't get the video or think it's "creepy", it's showing that we get consumed by the media that sets standards on what we (GENERALLY women) should look like: tall, skinny, long legs and neck, pretty, big eyes and thin waist. And those standards start to get to our heads leading us to do outrageous things and disorders like bulimia and anorexia just to feel appreciated and to fit in, but even after all of that we still arent satisfied with our selves. The media is responsible for death, starvation, malnutrition, hospitalization, etc and is messing up teenage girls' and women's lives just because of some stupid standards. Remember this to all the beautiful creatures with low self esteems, If you feel beautiful on the inside, then you'll start to feel beautiful on the outside too
I just noticed for the first time.. at 2:31 is that the Young and Sick dude sitting two seats to the left of Mark? I can't tell for sure but I think it really looks like him.
My interpretation of best friend: In a video, Mark Foster talked about how he was suffering writer's block and how he was "all strung out" of ideas, hence "when your best friend's all strung out." And he said that he wrote a song about that. So I think his "best friend" is either music or his own mind. This is supported in the line "Yeah, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start." I think "I can feel its beginning to end" would be about ideas starting to flow again. This may be a long shot but "smiling in the dark" could relate to how Mark writes in what he calls his "cave." "I've been a river bed, I've been a rabid force" I think this part is speaking about how Mark had plenty of ideas flowing in the past and has been passionate (e.g. sparking the need to discuss gun control laws and bullying through Pumped Up Kicks) "Sometimes it feels like I only dream in black and white" I think this line is speaking of the lack of creativity Mark has been feeling. "I'm here, no matter where you are, So let it in with, open arms, no matter where you are, Sometimes, you'll have to wait, And it passes by like a satellite or star, No matter where you are" I feel like this part could be referring to how creativity is an existing being on its own and its not something one can just force when called upon, it comes to you and its up to you to seize it. With all this being said, the album artwork and film clip of this song do show a strong connection to the song being abut drugs. I think Mark Foster has written this song about both things simultaneously and in parallel with each other, showing just how brilliant of an artist he is, because while the song is about creativity, it also encapsulates the whole notion of the Supermodel album. Foster has said in interviews that the album is very much a comment on modern culture, consumerism and the way we strive for society's idea of perfection to become like supermodels. In the Best Friend video clip, the model consumes the other models to obtain the features she desires most in order to make herself perfect, however this vanity works against her and it hurts her as she's not able to keep everything down - leading to the part of the clip where she collapses on the catwalk, paralleling with the Supermodel album cover. I think maybe the idea of the model being on drugs and the model being the personification of society could be Mark Foster saying that society needs to think more clearly about what beauty is because with how irrational society is, it may as well be on drugs. (I could be completely wrong about all of this though hahahahah)
Nope, only the bass player left. Mark Foster, the singer, is the main writer for all the songs. He even played all the instrument when he started recording Pumped Up Kicks.
I like this video and I also think it’s very important. I had anorexia when I was a teenager and I put myself in some really dangerous health conditions. This video reminds me of that period of my life and how I have fully recovered mentally and physically. Pay attention to your kids, if you have the talk about sex, have the talk about body image and self-love, how most things are unreal, talk about how important it is to take care of your body. Social media and beauty standards can be very damaging sometimes. Try to understand and be patient with your body. If you read this and you are going to something related, I understand completely, I really do. Seek help and listen to the people that love you, even if you don’t think that’s true. Try to love yourself, one bit at a time, everyday.
I'm surprised this song doesn't have more recognition. It's a very real and accurate depiction of humans and the value of our own self worth. Never being satisfied regardless of the changes we continue to make to our bodies not even realizing the damage we're doing to ourselves until it's irreversible. Great song by a great band. My friend put me in this years ago.
I once was the best friend. Strung out, with nothing. A friend opened his house to me, and my life has completely turned around. Got a job, got in shape, stopped using. Its so hard to do these things with no hope, been there for far to long. Nothing to look forward to. To not be excited about the rest of your life. Only capable of seeing the darkness and bad in the world. There is darkness and bad everywhere in the world, but good is there to. Life is perspective, and if your perspective has since the time of your birth been 110% trying to survive, its impossible to see anything better. To see what you could be. Don't put yourself down. You're a human being, even if you use. Don't hate yourself for using, that is not the right way to better yourself. That is focusing on the bad. Focus on the good, love yourself, self care. Take care of yourself because you are the only one who can, not even a Significant Other can (or should have to). If you can't stop using, start doing good things to yourself at least, to show yourself you care about yourself. Perhaps that will help. It helped me, I love the part of me that loves to use, it is a part of me that made me who I am today (better then I ever was before). Maybe I'll use again, but I won't put myself down for doing so. I'll instead be there for myself to figure out why and to fix whatever problem is there because I care about myself. My whole self. Take this all with a grain of salt. I'm lucky, unfortunately more lucky then a lot of people on the planet. Wish you all well. Peace Inner Peace World Peace
This video is freaking fantastic. Totally reminiscent of what 'Supermodel' is about and I love the last shot with the model puking, it is basically the album cover. The message is so vivid and presented well and Mark is looking fine as ever ;) oh and I love the song too but I wouldn't be here otherwise!
I just noticed how the singer is with the girl when wokes up, and in all her presenations and hang-outs...like a best friend literaly always there for her

You will be fine. Just take one hit and no more than that the first time. And just remember it's only a trip. You can't stop it so just go with it until you come down. Just take it early afternoon! I took mine at night and toward the end I was so tired but LSD doesn't let you sleep. So I was battling sleep while tripping toward the end. That was my mistake though ! Slept until 9am the next morning. You will be fine though!

I Thought those were the lyrics O.O I read your coment and google for lyrics and just realized that actually they say "when your best friend's all strung out"
Absolutely. People that are calling FTP a one hit wonder have no idea how the music industry works. In the alternative world they are considered trailblazing hitmakers. Besides, they are more of an album artist and they have had two top ten albums already - and two #1 alt. albums.
MrYap123456 I think 1R is an amazing band and theyve managed to rack up tons of top 40s but according to the radio format, they are not alternative. Im not sure why
Foster the People's DEEEEP! Don't you just love 'em?! This song/video is saying that jealousy and an idea of perfectionism is killing society, killing us slowly but surely. A body is a body - let's be glad that we each have one! Why do we want things just 'cause so-and-so has it? You're not allowed to call someone fat, but skinny shaming's okay? WHAT. When you're naturally skinny, it sucks! You have this hate following you everywhere and the questions... sooo many questions!
KnightGunny Interesting... That's how it used to be here in the U.S. Now it's flip-flopped... It's almost like skinniness off of the runway means that you're automatically anorexic and you hate your body.
people calling you a board because you're flat, getting called twig legs, your family asking if you're anorexic, being bombarded by the "real women have curves" shit, yeah... Being skinny is a blast!
LetsStopThisSong i rather not be skinny because being called twig legs is not what you would not want to call me im nethier fat or skinny but im in the middle
Don't tell that to a MGMT fan. But yeah Mark Foster is amazingly talented. These guys are gonna be around for a while judging from the fan base they have built over the last three years.
Well I don't hear MGMT on the radio or see them at music festivals. Their second album was nowhere near as good as their first - hence MGMT were a flash in the pan.
Well first of all, any real foster the people fan understands it because of the second album they published, Supermodel, is a basis to this video. The model there is trying to make every single possible to thing to be the best, and how she eats the other ones I find it simply hilarious, the appearances of dumb and love struck Ponsi and Cubbie just makes this video a blast. We can see how the insecurities of women especially teenagers gets them and want to change a lot of things in their body, but everything at ends comes to light. The last scene of the video is the supermodel throwing up the blue dress, in which there is a lovely poem written by our dear Mark Foster. Also you can notice that there are a few cameras taking picture of this embarrassing moment. Pause the video and compare it to the supermodel cover and there you go! Lots of love from a fostered/ foster kid fan. Raise up to your ability!
This song popped into my head randomly and all I could remember was vaguely the concept of this video. I was looking up "music video where model becomes super skinny and tall" or "music video where model becomes alien" and couldn't find anything lmao. Thankfully I dug enough and eventually found the video. I'm glad I did I used to love this song back in the day.
this is an amazing video, i think that foster he people are some of the few people that can see through the bonds of materialism and see what life truly is. I respect that.
Esta hermosa música Best friend la estaba buscando desde haces muchos años, la escuche hace como 10 years, y me encantó me recuerda muchas cosas de cuando estaba chiquita ahora tengo 18 años... Amo Esta Joya 💎 Gracias Foster the People
This is my interpretation of the song: The main girl you see is obviously a supermodel who is trying to fit in to society's definition of "a perfect supermodel". When she eats the girls, she's eating what she doesn't "have". She keeps constantly eating and changing(morphing) herself to get what society says is perfect. When she walks onto the runway, the audience gasps because she isn't what they want to see. She tried too hard to become something society said was perfect. And when she throws up the dress from the last girl she has ate, the dress is the poem Mark wrote on the cover of Supermodel. It's a genius and beautiful video showing us the problems us women/girls are having today, to be perfect.
No, I thought it was about the preassues of being a woman and the modelling and stuff. That's what Mark Foster said that the whole album "Super Model" is based off of. Not drugs, the video just looks trippy.
I agree! FtP does discuss drugs and money sometimes, but they have such an intelligent, thoughtful take on it. Their lyrics and videos are so thought-provoking!
As the years go by, this video seems most recent than ever. Pretty young girls changing their bodies to fit beauty standards only to get scrutinized by the people who they're trying to please, while everyone around her just watch her self destruction without being able to help her...
ourdemocracy hasbeenhacked. A movie about someone having writer's block? Sounds boring. I watched an interview in which Mark did say that that was the meaning/inspiration, so I'm not making that up.
That bridge from 3:07 until the orgasmic explosion into the chorus at 3:42 is pure genius! It's the song I first noticed from FTP in 2014, which then led me back into their first album. Such an underrated band. My favourite songs from them are: 1. Coming of Age (Supermodel) 2. Helena Beat (Torches) 3. Sit Next To Me (Sacred Hearts Club) 4. Best Friend (Supermodel) 5. Pumped Up Kicks (Torches) 6. Imagination (* new single) 7. Houdini (Torches) 8. Pseudologica Fantastica (Supermodel) 9. Don't Stop (Torches) 10. Style (non-album single)

Remember this to all the beautiful creatures with low self esteems, If you feel beautiful on the inside, then you'll start to feel beautiful on the outside too
Well said
Exactly.
The videos message was pretty obvious. And no not "Generally Women"
Ha ha ha! You're a feminist.
I thought it was about an alien that eats attractive people.
At 4:08 I never noticed in all years I've been watching this the arms start to curve like they do on the album cover
At 1:59 I just notices that her leg grows longer
Lol I just noticed the arm thing too
I just noticed for the first time.. at 2:31 is that the Young and Sick dude sitting two seats to the left of Mark? I can't tell for sure but I think it really looks like him.

True
Wow you're right, they have the squiggly arms and if you look even closer, the word from the album are on the dress that lady puked up.

My interpretation of best friend:
In a video, Mark Foster talked about how he was suffering writer's block and how he was "all strung out" of ideas, hence "when your best friend's all strung out." And he said that he wrote a song about that. So I think his "best friend" is either music or his own mind. This is supported in the line "Yeah, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start."
I think "I can feel its beginning to end" would be about ideas starting to flow again. This may be a long shot but "smiling in the dark" could relate to how Mark writes in what he calls his "cave."
"I've been a river bed, I've been a rabid force" I think this part is speaking about how Mark had plenty of ideas flowing in the past and has been passionate (e.g. sparking the need to discuss gun control laws and bullying through Pumped Up Kicks)
"Sometimes it feels like I only dream in black and white" I think this line is speaking of the lack of creativity Mark has been feeling.
That's what I love about Mark Foster - his work is very multi-layered. Definitely leaves you with something to think about.
You sound completely right about all of this...if so, Mark is a complete Genius too!
It's 2019 and I still love this song so much

True but the bass player and main writer left the band.
+Echo shift seriously!?! I was all pumped that I discovered a new band to listen too 😩
Nope, only the bass player left. Mark Foster, the singer, is the main writer for all the songs. He even played all the instrument when he started recording Pumped Up Kicks.
If you follow mark on snap chat , he's making new music. ITS HELLA GOOD!!

3:07 that transition I can't get enough
My favorite song on the album.
Facts 🙌🏼
You can hear the 80's and 70's influence in this band, they rock! More bands should follow.
There is an awesome new 80's/70's inspired band today called Fire Tiger,
Search: Fire Tiger - Energy.
Chase Jones They really rock!! Thanks for the heads up!

I love the color palette used in the video, especially the animated scenes.
I just noticed how the singer is with the girl when wokes up, and in all her presenations and hang-outs...like a best friend literaly always there for her

Good and intense. I'm done with experimenting but it was a good experience. Just moving on and going to enjoy life in a different way
Lol I'm worried I'm going to try some soon
You will be fine. Just take one hit and no more than that the first time. And just remember it's only a trip. You can't stop it so just go with it until you come down. Just take it early afternoon! I took mine at night and toward the end I was so tired but LSD doesn't let you sleep. So I was battling sleep while tripping toward the end. That was my mistake though
! Slept until 9am the next morning. You will be fine though!

Doug Stenza I agree he is one of my favorite
This band has 7 alternative hits and counting. Thats pretty good actually considering most alternative artists never even made the top 40.
Absolutely. People that are calling FTP a one hit wonder have no idea how the music industry works. In the alternative world they are considered trailblazing hitmakers. Besides, they are more of an album artist and they have had two top ten albums already - and two #1 alt. albums.
This is better than all well-known bands like 1D. Well not 1R
MrYap123456
I think 1R is an amazing band and theyve managed to rack up tons of top 40s but according to the radio format, they are not alternative. Im not sure why

I saw this video once on TV a decade ago and the imagery stuck with me so hard. I am ao happy I found it.
***** Ha-ha, umm, no, just no... Deep as in they're emotionally deep. The messages in their songs are ALWAYS meaningful and powerful.
people calling you a board because you're flat, getting called twig legs, your family asking if you're anorexic, being bombarded by the "real women have curves" shit, yeah... Being skinny is a blast!
LetsStopThisSong i rather not be skinny because being called twig legs is not what you would not want to call me im nethier fat or skinny but im in the middle
+LetsStopThisSong That's your opinion and you're entitled to it 100%, but a lot of naturally skinny women don't see the positives like you do.
This video is so sad but it's the truth. Idk if the media or stars know how much ordinary ppl are affected by what they do or say.
I agree but people shouldn't put so much trust or emotion into a celebrity or someone they don't know, a lot of it is self confidence as well
True but it's difficult when it's all you see
I thought they'd be a flash in the pan like MGMT, but this is pretty rocking.
Don't tell that to a MGMT fan. But yeah Mark Foster is amazingly talented. These guys are gonna be around for a while judging from the fan base they have built over the last three years.
ur a dumbass mgmt is only getting better clearly you only listen to the radio
You lost all credibility when you called MGMT a flash in the pan.
Well I don't hear MGMT on the radio or see them at music festivals. Their second album was nowhere near as good as their first - hence MGMT were a flash in the pan.
^ exactly there ya go i dont hear them on the radio if u want commercialized bull shit then maybe mgmt isnt for you
Increíble, no existe ni una mala canción de ellos💜

2017 and I am still obsessed with this song. Perfect
such an ear-worm 🙃
The substance.
This whole album is very underrated :(
This song popped into my head randomly and all I could remember was vaguely the concept of this video. I was looking up "music video where model becomes super skinny and tall" or "music video where model becomes alien" and couldn't find anything lmao. Thankfully I dug enough and eventually found the video. I'm glad I did I used to love this song back in the day.
Be yourselves, if not you'll turn into an alien.
Valuable life lesson.

Esta hermosa música Best friend la estaba buscando desde haces muchos años, la escuche hace como 10 years, y me encantó me recuerda muchas cosas de cuando estaba chiquita ahora tengo 18 años... Amo Esta Joya 💎 Gracias Foster the People
This is my interpretation of the song:
The main girl you see is obviously a supermodel who is trying to fit in to society's definition of "a perfect supermodel".
WOW! tu interpretación me ha fascinado.
You know what? They always song about good stuff! Not all about sex, drugs, and money! They're music is perfect for everyone to listen to!
that's why i love them
No, I thought it was about the preassues of being a woman and the modelling and stuff. That's what Mark Foster said that the whole album "Super Model" is based off of. Not drugs, the video just looks trippy.
Either way, still more meaningful than some band's music. Love Foster The People!
I agree! FtP does discuss drugs and money sometimes, but they have such an intelligent, thoughtful take on it. Their lyrics and videos are so thought-provoking!
Yes! Thats totally right on.
the animation in this is perfect and the editing is perfect there needs to be more music videos like this

As the years go by, this video seems most recent than ever. Pretty young girls changing their bodies to fit beauty standards only to get scrutinized by the people who they're trying to please, while everyone around her just watch her self destruction without being able to help her...
