    about the "I learn music by ear " there was an ensemble of musicians here in Romania called Lautarii de la Clejeni ( Taraful haiducilor ). They were all gypsies and that's what they did all their lives, one of them learned fucking paganini on the violin by listening to the cassette a few times. The old master of the group invented a new weird way to play violin by pulling a string through the other strings ( very sacreligious in regards to classical music ) but it sounded amazing in our folclore music .

    Regarding the Polish airline story, reminded me of a pre-pandemic gig where I was responsible for hauling my kumu hula's ipu heke, a traditional percussion instrument, from Hawai'i back to the States. The morning of our departure on Hawaiian Airlines, I made an effort to look extra presentable vs my normal airport at 6 AM version of myself, hoping that TSA pre-check would also give me better chances of a friendlier inspection/boarding experience. The guy I had stopped me and I was steeling myself with all the Karen statements I had mentally prepared for this moment, when another female airline attendant who seemed to know more about cultural protocols came over and saved me. She gave my ipu heke its own seat in the back for the duration of the flight!!!

    Learning by ear came long before sheet music, and it is still the traditional method in many traditions. I find that learning by ear tends to lead to faster memorization than reading sheet music, but it takes longer to learn to play a piece. I am also typically learning fairly simple pieces by ear compared to the things I use sheet music for.

    I was in a choir for 10 years, but I can't read sheet music (and I was not the only one). Rutter was a little tough, but I got on OK. On the other hand I watched the problems caused by those who NEVER watched the conductor, because they couldn't tear their eyes away from the music - which they had sung hundreds of times. The sight-reading people could never get syncopation right either, while those of us who sing intuitively found it a breeze.

      @@FefeHpg - I cheated a LITTLE bit. When we started to learn a new piece, at rehearsal I would sit next to someone in my section that I knew could read music, and I would sing what they sang. After a time or two through, I had it. Sometimes, if it was a harder piece, I would buy a cd, or they would burn a few for some of us to listen to at home. I could see when the notes went up and down 😆 on the sheets, and of course the choir director set the tempo, told us louder or softer, that sort of thing. I didn't fly under the radar though. I was asked to sing in a couple of ensembles, so I was accepted in spite of my shortcomings.

    I had a professor in college who would not call singers, musicians because they often could not read music. I agree that not reading music is like learning a language without being able to read it. I started piano at 6 because I was playing by ear. I ended up being good at sight reading and improvising - the best of both worlds.

      @@elizabethyork3909 I think the analogy about not reading music is like learning a language without being able to read it does hold up. He's not saying it's wrong or right but an observation. See also: Lynn Harrell, who didn’t trust airlines with his cello and always bought a second seat for it. Both Lynn and Cello Harrell got frequent flyer miles, and Mr. Cello’s miles were only used for the instrument. Delta did not approve and banned him from the frequent flyer system…

    I play piano and classical guitar and I find it very hard to read tabs with guitar but luckily classical guitar is all with sheet music. Tabs are certainly more restrictive and with sheet music you can read it like a sentence and visualise the ups and down in the music to be able to make a musical sentence. With tabs you play it in one way but with sheet you music you can play the same note in different places on the fretboard and it can affect your tone where you play so sheet music all the way. I imagine I am a bit biased to sheet music as that is what I learned with the piano.

    I've been playing violin for a few months now (played some as a kid, inspired by Twoset to try again as an adult). I've played a few songs from sheet music, but I've been trying to learn & play one without music - just by ear. It's pretty hard, especially trying to remember fingering and everything.

    • @PalKrammer
      @PalKrammer Рік тому +1

      Keep at it. Eventually you will reach a point where you just “know” where to place your fingers to get the notes you need while playing. Both on keyboard and on violin I used to try to memorize which notes followed which and doing it that way was so stressful. What helped me was just listening to the song over and over in my head and then being relaxed enough so that as I played the song in my head and a few notes at a time, I eventually didn’t need to memorize which key followed which or which finger position followed which: the song in my head dictated what I needed to do. It takes time, but you’ll get there. I’ve been playing violin for almost two years and it is indeed a difficult instrument, but so satisfying when you do something well.
