  • About a year and a half ago we picked up a non-running 1936 Farmall F-30 tractor from someone over in Eastern Idaho. The F-30 is the predecessor to the popular Model M tractor. Where I already have a Model M and the successor Super M, I thought the F-30 would be a good addition to the lineup.
The F-30 is a hand-start only tractor with no battery or lights. It also originally shipped on all steel wheels, so the four speed transmission tops out at around 5 MPH. It's not exactly the tractor to take if you want to get somewhere in a hurry... However, it was considered a big tractor for the time--almost too big, as the smaller Model F-20 was the top seller (by a long shot).
The John Deere tractor that competed with the F-30 was the Model G. The earlier G did not sell as well either, where the smaller Model A has significantly higher sales. The John Deere A was even outsold by the even smaller Model B. I guess farms at the time just weren't ready for the larger equipment yet.
Anyway, I've been slowly working on the machine for the past year. I finally took the plunge and purchased new back tires, which was the last thing it really needed to be able to get it out and use it some. Where tires are so expensive I was procrastinating the purchase for a while.
I hope you can enjoy this old piece of history.

Looking good, and it sounds good too. I like the simplicity of these tractors for the ease of working on them. Nice video.

Those wheels are original and so is the paint color . Also I think it's a narrow tread.

All the info that I found shows that they went red at the beginning of the '37 model year. This tractor is a '36 model year, made in '35. Do you have any info that would point to that being incorrect? I just want to do the right color with it. Thanks!

@@KyleWeber I have a few IH history books mostly by Guy Fay. He's a historian at the IH museum in Wisconsin. All the books I have say 36 model year is when they changed over. Red power magazine had a whole article about paint. They have a website.

@@KyleWeber I googled it and Nov 1 1936 is the change to red on the line so some late 36s can be originally red. Dealers also could have changed many of the earlier tractors left on the lot so flip a coin. Just about all tractors that came into the dealer for repairs got a free paint job(red). It's confusing fer sure.

@@wesleycallison5593 That's for sure! Thanks for taking the time to do some research on it. I think where it could have been grey I may put it grey for the uniqueness--but like you said, it could have been painted red before it reached the farmer. If only they could talk...

Your 1936 f-30 Farmall should be red. McCormick Deering switched from grey to red in late 1935. I have a 1935 F20 it was painted grey.

We had a red one as a spare in the 50s. Could be wrong but believe last grey ones were 1935.

Were is this from? Were u in drought or was this early spring? I heard that it was very dry some places in States & out west in Canada. Thanks

36 is when IH changed to red. That tractor is a narrow tread.

Sadly, yes. They are paying insane prices too. I know I sure wouldn't have been able to afford my farm with the current market.
