‎ Cory's fish room has gone through lots of changes since his last update. A whole row of totes are gone, he got new fish for his living room tank, and lots of fish are being sold off at the Aquarium Co-Op retail store. His 2023 goals include making his tanks more self-sustainable so he can enjoy them without having to do a ton of maintenance all the time. That's why he is downsizing the number of aquariums he owns and continuing to make adjustments to his work/life balance.

@@kurtisstutzman7056 I have NEVER used ANY fertilizer and my tanks are lush with plant growth. I've been in this hobby for over 50 years and you sound suspiciously like a fertilizer shill/employee of Aquarium co-op, so thanks for playing. NATURE doesn't pour chemical fertilizers in ponds, lakes or streams yet they also have lush plant growth. YOU and everyone else that can't grow plants in a balanced aquarium are
obviously doing something wrong. It may be overstocking, overfeeding, changing too much water NOT ENOUGH PLANTS or something else. Figure it out Kurtis, but it isn't me saying fertilizers are unnecessary.

I think it's so important to understand our limits. I downsized last year from 3 tanks to 1 and it's been so much better for me. It's easier to keep up on maintenance and actually enjoy my fish!

So many fishkeepers seem to treat multi-tank syndrome and rooms full of fish as the inevitable endgame of this hobby, but I think it's easier to lose focus when trying to keep multiple tanks at the same time. I went from 4 tanks to 3 recently and it felt good, thinking about possibly dropping the 3rd.

I feel like every hobbyist hits that at some point. Every single hobbyist I know starts with 1... graduates to 10 or however many they fit in their house.
I personally hit 13 tanks and it just became a CHORE... and I just wasn't enjoying it anymore (I'm a hobbyist, but a very casual one and I simply do not have 5-10 hours a week to dedicate to it).
I scaled down from 13 to 4 small tanks, and maintenance on it was much simpler, about 1-2 hours a week. And I was able to refocus on the part of the hobby I actually enjoy: breeding fish.

Yes, I love that you show the tanks when they’re in their best shape and also when they’re at their normalest! Most hobbyists deal with all of these annoyances and it’s so great to see it normalized on this channel AND hear how it can be fixed up, or how tweaks can be made to prevent that. Creating self sustaining ecosystems is, in my opinion, the best part of this hobby. I’ve been in a bit of an aquarium slump for a while - kinda lost the excitement, but I’m trying to come back to it because I miss it. Like you, this has required some honest talks with myself and a little bit of downsizing, too.

100% agree. Our tanks are also natural. We have all sorts of critters in them. Worms, planaria, scuds, snails, and of course the fish. The green algae is all over the wood and rocks and it is absolutely gorgeous. I love watching the fish hunt and actually enjoy their environment. It is full of activity and the fish are vibrantly colored and healthy.

I love these little casual conversation videos, Cory. I can certainly relate to spending so much time doing the things you must do that it severely limits the time you have to do the things you want to do. I really appreciate the tips and advice about ways to help it not be a burden. I've heard similar advice in regards to stuff like project vehicles. If it has sat untouched for a year just doing something as simple as dragging it to a different place in the garage, etc. can reinvigorate your interest and get you re-started on working on it. Same goes for re-scaping a tank or re-designing a fish wall or room, changing the focus of projects and tanks, etc. VERY useful advice. Thank you for letting us in :) Cheers.

As someone who had his first tank at 16, and is now 61. I too have gone through the downsizing that often occurs when keeping a lot of tanks. The hobby for me, has been one of peaks and valleys that have filled that time. I too have read a lot of books, and I used to pride myself in knowing so much of the Latin nomenclature, and then the experts go and reclassify a lot of what I had memorized. Oh well. Stuff like that is of little importance in the grand scheme of keeping fish. Making it enjoyable, and less of a chore is always a struggle. That is one part of the hobby that will never change...

Love the tanks! I have 3 Aquarium Co-Op sponge filters and I can NEVER get them to work without big bubbles coming from the top around the filter! It's frustrating to see yours not doing that and mine do no matter what I do, shorter tubing, longer tubing, tightening, loosening....ugh, help Cory! BTW, I bought the Ziss breeder box 2 months ago from you and I have raised 7 Emerald Cory babies that are now 5 weeks old and healthy after failing with other methods! Thank you!

I think it's awesome that you want to change things up
& downsizing is the best way to do it on a big scale.
    I just have 1 75 gal aquarium & thinking about 1 more
just for plants to grow in get some algae eater type fish
    & be done with it, my main 75 gal I have Danio's & Cory's
that I MAY put in the 2nd tank when I get it & put the
plant's in the 1 the fish was in not real sure just yet.

I have definitely noticed a change in your energy in the last several videos. You actually seem to be enjoying what your talking about compared to the last several years.

I bet you could go old school and develop a nice under gravel filter for a tank and go from there. I think it would be a cool tank. Great updates.

The blackbeard covered log looks amazing. I wish blackbeard algae was green so it would look like crazy cool grass like plant coating.

Really like the recent changes to the fish building. Good to see you switching things up to increase your enjoyment. Sad you won't ne at Aquashella this year but understand why not. What do we have to do to get them to bring Dean to Daytona???

    Funny you should say that...
I just got back from Design & Construction Week in Vegas last week and I attended a lot of presentations and classes on the [kitchen design] business and trends and one of the over-arching trends was on Wellness, and not being able to pour from an empty cup, and getting back to enjoying life, and bringing nature into design because of the emphasis on biophilia.
And I've been stepping back from social media, and UA-cam (sorry!), and focusing on myself and my family and my environment etc.
I hope this movement gains momentum because I think we really need it as a society.

Dang, I wish I was your nearby fish buddy, I'm such a noob I'd be learning as we did stuff and you'd send me home with some plants that were extra and it would be so worth it to help in your fish room for a day! It's good tho that you are scaling back to where it's more manageable. We all need that in this world, I think. I love Ladybird photobombing with her cute little smile when you were talking about the algae, lol.

Hey Cory! I was wondering if you have heard of a gravel called Rio Xingu? I think it would really compliment the gravel that you like. It has an awesome color variation and looks very natural. Thanks for the awesome video!

In case you didnt try this: Throttle the output valve of the FX6. Sometimes, if you try to start the filter with the entire valve open, the pump cant build enough pressure and shuts down.

Have you ever thought about starting a snail tank? Then you can add them live to lady birds tank. It would cut the cost of feeding her. It also would help the algae and reduce clean times. The ones that she misses could help clean the tank.
