@@ObiwanNekody your comment is kind of broken but I'm assuming you meant to say a spin off about most of their backstories was procuded. If that's the case, no, such thing never happened. But the novel only tells stories about Frieren, Fern, Stark, Aura, Kanne & Lawine. So considering the people who are introduced in the mage exam, only Kanne & Lawine got a backstory.
To give some german translations to the (new) characters names, because most describe them well Lawine means avalanche Kanne means pot (like in teapot) Übel means nasty, foul, bad (gets used as evil in "a lesser evil") Denken means thinking Kraft means strength Frieren means freezing Stark means strong Fern means far Himmel means sky/heaven Heiter means cheerful/bright Eisen means iron Wirbel depends on context, it can mean Vortex, Turmoil (it is also the word for vertebra) oh and the bird Stille means silence
Übel does not mean evil. It shares ancestry with the English word "evil", but doesn't have the same modern meaning. It means, more or less, "very bad", but in the same way the phrase in English. A person can be "very bad", you can feel "very bad". Same with the German word. The word "evil" in English has very different connotations.

Just like in English were something can "be sick", in a literal way or a "cool" way. I feel like this concept just got translated to german, just that it doesn't work like that in german. if i had to use just one word to describe her id definitely choose "yabai". Reserve "evil" for a character named "Böse". I agree with L4sz10. Considering all we know about her character, the closest meaning of her name would be "nasty", "trouble" or "bad". One could even arguing her hair colour is a referenct to puke, a product of another possible translation of her name "feeling sick/about to puke"
Frieren can't escape the Stark/Fern dynamic even when not with Stark and Fern. She gets alternate versions of them anyway--similar color schemes and same playful "fighting" too. All we need is Sein's being tired of their shit and slamming down his drink.
The story arcs before this have been incredible, but the upcoming mage exam episodes - starting here with ep 18 - really solidify the worldbuilding and elevate the entire series in my opinion. I absolutely adore the extra cast of characters that get added during this arc. Especially how we as the audience become quite invested in their lives in such a short span of time. It's a change of pace in many respects from the storytelling formula up to this point, and there are some who find it a bit jarring initially, but I really look forward to seeing your reactions to the next handful of episodes. If you thought the animation of the magic spells was incredible back in the Aura arc of ep 8-10, then get ready to have your mind blown even further!
Frieren's comment about only being able to see half the sky plays as a joke, but with the way she looks to the sky to think of Himmel, I like to think it's metaphorically Fern starting to take up as much space in her mind as Himmel does.
I think it's also a nod to her literally being mad she cant see the sky because **there are monsters in the sky**. They were already attacked by a flying monster in an earlier episode and frieren was caught by surprise then because they were in a covered cart and the flying ones hide mana. Then it goes directly to the attack at the end of this episode
I loved that when Frieren pulls Lawine and Kanna down when they freeze the first bird she turns around and leaves them facing the bird. So she gets splashed but not too badly but they get the full blast of water in the face.
"I wonder if the flower has any significance, or the butterflies" Frieren in her happier moments is often associated with flowers. Its less obvious on first watch but Fern is very often associated with butterflies, including in flashbacks with Heiter, and she is using what appears to be her personal magic to create butterflies in at least one of those flashbacks. Its likely that the magic she learned first as a child was bright illusionary butterflies.
Yeah, Frieren has two reason why she like flower magic, and so far one of the two reasons has been shown. Meanwhile, Fern has that memory of illusionary butterfly and also the accessory that Frieren bought for her is also a butterfly.
The significance of the flower and the butterfly in the start of the intro is that they both pertain to Frieren and Fern's favorite spells (the spell to make a field of flowers and the spell to make magic butterlies respectively).
