Australian Barra is one of the best eating fishes but it's better grilled because it has a somewhat delicate flavour that is ruined by the heavy batter a lot of places use. The problem is that a lot of places use the imported fish and it doesn't actually taste the same. The same with local flathead really, better to order it grilled. I mean you eat fish and chips with your hands on the beach but at a sit down place, no dramas using a knife and fork. A lot of Aussies eat their fish and chips both ways. Also real chip shop gravy is something else. Strange that they didn't have vinegar, that's pretty much a staple in a lot of places. Also you should try some of those other things, like the Chiko Roll, they are offered in just about every chip shop because most Aussies grew up eating them in school and from the takeaway. They were a cheap, quick snack on the way home from school back in the way back.
I'd never seen mushy peas served up with fish and chips until I started watching Rate My Takeaway in the UK. Also gravy or curry sauce and instead of fish cakes wr have potato scallops or potato cakes. You should try our Chiko Rolls and fried dim sims.
I lived in the Midlands for 5 years back in the eighties....we would do a pub crawl and call in to the local chippy around midnight. An 'open' chip curry was the best hey.
As an Aussie born and bred, the best fish and chips I had was from a chippie in London. The cod, with chips and white wine. My wife and I were blown away. It was so good. Can't beat the cod
I had cod n Brighton UK, tasted like cardboard but I think it was overcooked, I reckon some of the best seafood I had outside of Australia was in Greece.
If you look south you'll see 3rd bay from there (Point Perry). If you go down between 2nd and 3rd bay on the right tide height there is a great rock pool to sit around in on a sunny day. Like a big spa bath. A great day trip for you would be Rainbow beach. On a sunny day, take a picnic to Carlo sandblow in the late afternoon. Walk down to the beach end with your afternoon refreshments. Heck of a view. However, dogs cant come, sorry.
Fresh fish doesn’t have a “fishy” flavour. It should be clean to allow the taste of the meat to shine. Glad you’re stepping out and trying different fish. Life is full of wonderful foods and flavours. I’m excited to watch your future content as you settle into your new life.
Aww what a lovely comment, reading this made us smile ear to eat. Thank you for brightening our day with leaving such a heart warming message of support. We are up for trying many foods especially Joe, any you would recommend us to taste?
Be careful when walking on the rock pools, the rocks are sharp, they have lots of old shells embedded into them and they can be extremely slippery. Wear good shoes with strong grip and be extremely cautious where you step because you can easily be stung!
Rays tend to swim or burrow beneath the sand around shallow rocks too. You can accidentally tread on a barbed tail if you wallow around in the water. I've done it, ended up in hospital once. Ouch.
Watch out for blue ringed octopuses in rock pools. They look pretty but have a potentially deadly venom! Not common, but I have seen one on the Gold Coast. I don't think there's an anti-venom treatment available either.
Be mindful of the temperature of the ground when walking your dog... in summer you can fry an egg on the ground here especially roads, concrete or anything metal. If you aren't careful he could end up with burns on his paw pads.
Yes we’ve been made very aware but I do appreciate your concern. He’s only walked in the mornings or late afternoon + he’s got his carry bag that he goes in + some little boots to protect his pads.
Visit other states/areas in Australia and you will find that the variety of fish available in a fish & chip shop can be different; such as King George whiting and mullet in South Australia.
I haven’t read all the comments but you should check out The Fryer of Whitby in Mountain Creek if you are missing home. I haven’t gotten anything from there in a couple of years but there was an option for English style chips which I thought were fantastic (born in the USA, father is from Sheffield so have been to England loads of times) now living on the sunny coast. So happy to have discovered your channel. ❤ How long will you be staying here? There’s so much to see and do which it seems you have already discovered. 🥰 Looking forward to your next adventure! P.S. Enjoyed the vlog. In qld summertime highly recommend spanish or spotted mackerel. It is beautiful white fleshy fish. No fishy taste at all. Actually sweet. Best eating fish imo. Completely different to your mackerel in UK. Cheers👍
Pity their in Coolum, Queensland, on the east coast of Australia the fish and chips gets better the further south you go. (Ok, maybe not the chips, they are all made from the same type of potato in AUS, good chips come down to who is the cook!) I thought the fish and chips were good in Northern NSW, then i moved south of Sydney still on the coast. The difference between my weekly take away was like light and day. THEN. my brother and his wife took me to a seafood shop in Mornington in Victoria, which is close to Bass Strait. I Want to go to Tasmania now!
Also if you are going to swim at the beach, make sure you look for the flags and swim between them. The flags are designated safe swimming zones and they are also the patrolled areas. The flags are there to delineate from the "rips", which it sounds like you got yourself into and could have ended up a fatal mistake as many people die each year getting caught in them. If you are going to swim at our beaches watch some videos on what to do if caught in a rip, it could very well save your life. Most important thing to do is not panic and conserve your energy.
The best fish on that menu would be Spanish Mackeral, Barramundi and best of all would be the Sweetlip.. I love reef fish and I live on the tropical east coast where it is plentiful.
I’m almost certain the gravy is Maggi rich gravy. It’s a yellow container with a red lid. It’s the best gravy ever. Usually we have to buy it at the butcher here in Tasmania, but I’m sure it’s easier to come by in QLD xx😊
Just found your channel and loving it. I think you’re from close to where I’m originally from in the UK by the sounds of it. I’m from Stockport originally. The diversity of fish in Australia is huge, from the cold Antarctic waters of Tasmania to the equatorial warm waters of Queensland and Northern Australia, all contribute to vastly different flavors with fish and seafood.
I put mustard on my chips. Most places don't offer it, but I have found a couple of places here in Tasmania. We also have malt vinegar.
@@dawnradel9008 that actually sounds like something we need to try!
@@EatVentureVlog I prefer mild mustard, but if you like it a bit more spicy, that's good too.
I wouldn't call flathead fishy .
Thats why i like it lol
A lot of Fish and Chip shops have the option of having Chicken salt on your chips. It's phenomenal!
@@FarnarkleKing we’ve had a few people say this, we need to try it next time for sure
Oh yeah! Chicken salt's the best.
I must disagree - chicken salt is awful and tastes nothing like chicken. I don't like chicken chips (crisps) either. But, each to their own - I don't mind if others want to eat chicken salt, just so long as I don't have to 😉🇦🇺
@@taniahabib2275depends on the brand really some are really good some are awful

Guys do not pick up tiny octopuses that have blue rings from Rock pools.
Yes that’s a given, but thank you for letting us know. Their the must poisonous octopus in the world ain’t they!
@@EatVentureVlog yes and being so small and colourful, people just have to pick them up. The blue rings pulsating Is a warning, it's not happy.😁 Also the blue bottle jelly fish, only come in shore on a northern wind and incoming tide.
@@BobLouden-r9q I was glad that I happened upon a young lad who was about to pick one up and he took notice of my warning. I shudder to thing what may have happened if i had been a minute or two later.
Barramundi is native to northern Australia. It is a freshwater fish, I believe. The Barramundi for sale isn't wild caught. Imported from Asia now.
Ahh that’s good to know!
As an Aussie I love to holiday at Noosa Heads but have friends that live in Yaroomba that's quite nice too.
@@AndrewBellsWorld Noosa is beautiful, and we love Coolum!
He’s a gorgeous little dog. Both are nice fishes. In Australia you use your fingers to eat fish and chips.
This is my local fish and chips, and I've never tried the gravy. You've sold me on ordering it next time.
Coming from the UK the gravy was splendid, this might just be regular Aussie gravy 😅 Who knows we might see you around if your local too 👍
best fish and chips on the coast are at the fryer of whitby, at mountain creek. proper english fish and chips with curry sauce or gravy. tremendous!
We filmed a vlog here there today, It will be going up in a day or two 😉
@@EatVentureVlog sounds good. will look out for it. take care and enjoy your aussie adventures. the sunny coast is incredible.
We will try those next 🙌
when you stand on the edge of the surf you feel like your moving out into the surf but its actully the sand underneath your feet washing away
I lived in the Midlands for 5 years back in the eighties....we would do a pub crawl and call in to the local chippy around midnight. An 'open' chip curry was the best hey.
@@TA-wg9oi that sounds unreal! They don’t open till that time anymore in the uk 😅
How to upset an politically correct but ignorant American? Say there's nothing better than a faggot from the black country!
I tried Fish and chips in Whitby and in Glasgow. Truly awful in both cases. Could not imagine how they managed to make it so bad.
Good one in you go straight into a rip 😂
Whiting is my favourite
Knife and fork with fish n chips is like drinking milk with a fork. You don't do that in Australia unless you're in a restaurant. 😂
Since uploading we have been informed. In the UK knife and fork are very common to use😅
@@EatVentureVlog I grew up in the UK. I never saw anyone ever eat f&cs with a knife and fork. You've all gone soft in the last 35 years apparently 😂
@@triarb5790 I think you might be right 😂
Thank you very much for an enjoyable video
@@tonycurrie2964 thank you for your kind words 🙏
In Victoria we eat the potato cakes (scallops) with vinegar and plenty of salt.
Eyyyyy, just like us 🙌
If you look south you'll see 3rd bay from there (Point Perry).
Tasmanian here. We have lots of flathead. I think it’s best crumbed, not fried.
I'll try this next time for sure 👍
It is good anyway .....best fish ever !!
I should have said crumbed, not battered.
barramundi, red snapper and flattys(the rest are great too)
Thank you, we’ll try them 🙌
Be careful when walking on the rock pools, the rocks are sharp, they have lots of old shells embedded into them and they can be extremely slippery. Wear good shoes with strong grip and be extremely cautious where you step because you can easily be stung!
We need to hear this thank you Jeni for the great advise always 🙌
Rays tend to swim or burrow beneath the sand around shallow rocks too. You can accidentally tread on a barbed tail if you wallow around in the water. I've done it, ended up in hospital once. Ouch.
@@triarb5790 owch! Thank you for sharing, we’ll be aware of this
Watch out for blue ringed octopuses in rock pools.
No chicken salt ?
I'm surprised they didn't have vinegar, my personal favourite fish here is lightly battered whiting. Can't beat that imo.
When you say Vinegar? Do you mean white or malt?
Battered Coral trout, Mangrove Jack or flake too. Oh and potato scallops/cakes as well
@@EatVentureVlog Malt
@@nathr7375 Oh amazing we will be sure to ind somewhere that does malt next time 👍
Try snapper when they start coming into store. Preferably juvenile snapper
Thank you for your recommendation🙌
you could almost guarantee that gravy is gravox you can buy it at the shop in powdered form and add hot water.
You would expect good seafood in Australia when we're girt by sea. 😂👍
Must have chicken salt on the chips!
@@peterhoz it’s a staple here isn’t it! 😍
Also be very careful in rock pools or anywhere else for that matter of cone shells. They can be deadly if you encounter a big one.
Oh wow, thank you for the heads up I'll keep extra vigilante if we go down there again 👍
Vinegar is just as common here. It's in every fish and chip shop. Would have been in a spray bottle somewhere on the counter.
I've heard that you guys have white vinegar but do you mean that or malt vinegar? As we use malt in the UK?
@@EatVentureVlog usually white
Hervey Bay has an interesting mix - the newly wed and nearly dead. On the plus side, it has a much milder climate than the rest of central QLD.
You can generally ask for Vinegar my mum was English and she would always get Vinegar 😁
Did you have chicken salt on your fish and chips?
My sister-in-law used to snorkel of this point.
if you venture to Sydney, you must go to Doyles, they are the supreme fish n chips , they only cook in olive oil

What beach?column?
The beach is just Coolum beach in Coolum 👍
I guessed so...but that's not how we say it lol
Looking forward to your next adventure! P.S. Point Cartwright is also a nice whale watching spot but it’s nearly the end of the season. If you will be here next year please head up to Hervey Bay and book with Pacific Whale as they have a smaller boat which keeps you closer to the water and the whales. 😊
@@karen6778 we’ve been there, it’s a good little spot! Thank you for recommending.
We’re living here on the Sunshine Coast now so lots more adventures for you to see🙏
The gravy you're eating was most likely Maggie powdered gravy. Very popular in restaurants in Australia but you have to by in bulk. I think its strictly for restaurants or food outlets.
2kg minimum I think.
Oh wow, it's good for a powder gravy. Very different taste to the usual gravy in the UK. 10/10 😉
You can definitely get the 2kg tub in Drakes in SA or our local PFD. I know a lot of people who will go 'halves' and split a tub.
Sunset for our beaches 😊
I live on the sunshine coast. Point Cartwright is good for whales. That's about a half hour drive down the motorway to Kawana.
Coolum = cool + um. Not column 😃🇦🇺🇬🇧
Thank you, we need the help 🙌🤣
You are meant to swim between the flag's. They are there to keep you safe
I thought I did swim between the flags where I went in? I've been told to not swim outside of them, thank you for your concern too 👍
Enjoyed the vlog. In qld summertime highly recommend spanish or spotted mackerel. It is beautiful white fleshy fish. No fishy taste at all. Actually sweet. Best eating fish imo. Completely different to your mackerel in UK. Cheers👍
Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to give them a try
Pity their in Coolum, Queensland, on the east coast of Australia the fish and chips gets better the further south you go. (Ok, maybe not the chips, they are all made from the same type of potato in AUS, good chips come down to who is the cook!)
I thought the fish and chips were good in Northern NSW, then i moved south of Sydney still on the coast. The difference between my weekly take away was like light and day. THEN. my brother and his wife took me to a seafood shop in Mornington in Victoria, which is close to Bass Strait.
I Want to go to Tasmania now!
Tasmania is on the bucket list for us ❤️
Also if you are going to swim at the beach, make sure you look for the flags and swim between them.
@@laurenokeeffe4059 that sounds amazing we’ll keep our eyes out for that 🤩

Just found your channel and loving it. I think you’re from close to where I’m originally from in the UK by the sounds of it. I’m from Stockport originally.
Vinegar really isn’t a thing here in fish and chip shops. I’ve lived here for the last 7 years and have found vinegar only a handful of times in F&C shops. Even then it isn’t always malt vinegar
Also those birds are called brushturkeys not bush turkeys (everyone calls them bush turkeys but they’re wrong 🤣)
Congrats on the growth of your channel 🎉
Yes, very close! We’re from Bolton so not far at all.

Barramundi is a sea bass found throughout South East Asian waters.
You put gravy on your Fish!!!
Have seen a few videos of Brit's in OZ trying fish and chips and they all say 200% better, 😊
We agree!
It's the ocean, not the sea 😀 I understand about the fishy taste, I only like fish that doesn't taste fishy! There used to be a fabulous gelato shop in Coolum, not sure if it's still there.
I live in Hervey Bay and rhis really is the best place to see the whales. You should see them down there as they ll be making their way back down south now.
