Staghorn or Elkhorn depending on the plant and they don't hurt the tree. We had a huge one in our backyard and we used to put our banana skins in the top of it as food to enrich the plant.
Ribena cordial actually needs to be refrigerated otherwise it goes off. Australia has both white and malt vinegar as well as Italian imported balsamic vinegars.

Urgent/time sensitive recommendation: The AFL Grand Final is today (28/09) between the Sydney Swans and the Brisbane Lions at 2:30pm. Try to find a pub to watch it at. If you’ve never seen AFL, you’ve never seen anything like it. Also there is the 2nd Preliminary Final for the NRL tonight at 7:40pm (Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks) with the winner playing the Melbourne Storm next weekend in their Grand Final. Welcome to Australia, guys. Glad to have you.
Aussie chips depends on what the shop owner chooses, frozen pre-cut or early starts and hand-cutting potatoes. The chips vary widely in Australia. Macca’s introduced skinny fries to Australia back in the 70s, but I remember both my grandparents and my mother cooking chips at home, always hand cut.Scallops are sliced potatoes not reformed potato. Some places flour the chips before frying, giving them a crispy texture. The reasons all fish shops cook the chips twice is because twice cooked gives a crispy texture (although steam will quickly soften them so never wrap them up) but also because they take longer to cook from scratch and people prefer the food to arrive faster than fifteen minutes.
Double frying, with the right temperature, the potato is cooked but not brown in the first cook. They are allowed to cool off. The second fry is quickly done, and the chips go crisp and golden brown. Thus we have soft cooked centres with a crispy outer and chips are finished quickly to get out to the customers, the rught temperature means not too greasy. Woolies had vimto, my sister is looking for it, she loves it, not every servo has it in NQ.
No.I was referring to the batter that was scooped out of the deep fryer and placed in a bowl on the rack keeping it warm and the local kids would get a pennies wort or threepence worth if you could find enough bottles to cash in.
Used to get Scotch eggs in Aussie chip shops regularly about 30 years ago, mom used to make them, as well as other families, fairly common at Xmas... Most of the time if Aussie Chip shops have malt vinegar it's Cornwalls; usually malt and White (Malt vinegar was common, 30-40 years ago). The potato scallop used to be just battered hand slice potato and fried; "A barn" ? or Bun? It's a bun, a lot of Aussie get it wrong, it's not a roll, that's something you put a hot-dog in, ( calling a bun a roll seems to be fairly new, 20 years?), never seen a scallop on a bun at a chippie, might buy sliced white bread, marg and make it at the beach, or at home. Gravy on chips usually in a foil container (back about 30-40 years ago, now usually a white cardboard contain), with a fork. If you put sauce over your Chips (etc) yes a fork, knife and fork at a table..o.k, at the beach no, but some so, hot fish is HOT... Only time i've ever had mashy peas is on a potato pie, and that was in Wollongong, over 15 years ago... What did she say was the difference between English vs Aussie Chips? Ahhhh, o.k no our chips used to be done the same way, my mom work in a Fish & Chip shop for a while (Later a nurse); i've the the old chip cutter gizmo, a hand operated machine (probably brought from the U.K?), there is a 'traditional ''chippy'' in my small city, but it's abit far away; most sell french -frigging-fries now; But there's almost none left; You pre-fry a batch (yes in the morning, but you might need to make 2-3 batches), let it cool, then when someone orders a serving, you fry again (many chippies used to use tallow, lard). That large chip portion cost about $1-2 in my day (enough to feed four hungry ppl)... Used to be able to get celery salt, i prefer it over chicken (some brand are better then others), haven't seen it for years (just found where to buy it, flip i'm an idiot...). I've lived in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland (i've lived many places in Brisbane, including goldcoast and Sunshine coast, i live in the Darling downs ATM)... Regarding the sun, i spent my first 10 years almost living on the beach, from 5-8 Y.O, the end of school day to 7PM (weekends all day), i've had sunscreen on maybe 3 times in my life... Take Vit-d3 (1000 IU or more; Most ppl are massively deficient ). I've had Crew cut since i was about 10, i do it myself now, i have a full head of hair, just don't care about it. P.S - Used to love Rice pudding too, sometime mom added condensed milk (could eat a whole can), apple pie and custard, sometimes also ice-cream, is that a thing in the U.K? I like you guys, stay safe and have a bloody good year.
@@nathboz Sth Aust here and where we are we call them potato fritters - potato cake is mashed pots rolled in crumbs and deep fried, usually with cheese or tuna or something in middl
Thanks for your videos, I am enjoying them. I live in Sydney. When I was growing up (long time ago) there was a fish and chip shop in every suburb. At that time they would hand cut the chips and cook them twice in lard. They cam in used newspaper and we would douse them in vinegar and salt. I would often stop at the shop after school and get some on a winter's day. Absolutely great memories! Sadly, at least in Sydney, with the mix on many cultures and new foods, the fish and chip shops have largely disappeared.
Another great video guys! I'm a Grey Nomad, permanently travelling around the country in my motor home but despite being based in Brisbane haven't yet explored the Sunny Coast. It's now on my must visit list! Note to Kodi - I shudder when I see you driving with your seat belt twisted. In a crash it could lead to a broken collar bone, ribs or damage to some internal organs if you're thrown forward into the belt and the twist is in the wrong place. Keep it flat across your chest and hips.
You are right in the chicken salt was designed originally to go on chicken. It should not taste like chicken at all. There are different brands with slightly different ingredients, but onion and garlic powder, 'spices', salt and yeast extract is the main ingredients in the one I have at home. Also you can get different chip sizes. That is simply thick cut chips, but there are also wedges, regular and skinny. You can also get deep fried Mars bar here. We say nougat the same way you do. This isn't the US we use British English here.
While it's not cordial, have a look in Woolies and Coles for Aussie Nexba drinks. Two brothers in law from QLD. Sugar free and SO many different options. Their kombucha sales have gone crazy in the UK!
You have to go to England to taste the fare before making any wild claims. Most fish and chip shops in Oz serve crappy local fish like hoki or barramundi, which is devoid of taste. Cod is the only true fish to use in fish and chips.
**Variety is "the spice of life".** I would try the British-style fish'n'chips for sure. A lot of us Australians have UK heritage, so it's not unusual, and I, for one, like to try foods from all different cultures. I think it enriches our enjoyment of life, in my opinion. Some might be "sticklers" for a particular style of food they are familiar with, and that is their own choice to make, but, personally, I prefer to experience more variety to see what I do, and don't like. We have had Mars bars in Australia for decades, and I know I have seen that the local fish'n'chips shops offer deep-fried Mars bars, but I have never tried them, and I probably won't. That's just my personal preference for savoury, rather than sweet, foods. Your little pup is so cute. Beware of hot paths, roads, and beach sand in the lead up to, and during the summer months. It is possible for your pups cute little paws to get very badly burned, and so can your own feet. Queensland has some very beautiful places to visit. I know you are going to enjoy visiting all the local beauty spots. Take all precautions at the beaches. Listen to the genuine locals, they know what they are talking about. Thanks for sharing your wonderful discovery adventures. All the best, take care, and stay safe and well.
My mum used to make scotch eggs for me when I was a child but I don't think they're something anyone would order is an Aussie fish and chip shop. There's also the argument between states about whether that is a scallop potato or a potato cake. Quite amusing seeing you're excitement about getting Pommy fish and chips. LOL
I have seen that meal with the mushy peas & gravy over the chips many times in my younger days . Usually in the gutter outside the pub late on Saturday night. Well it looked very similar.
The main thing that make batter soggy is not ventilating the packet it comes in - just poke a hole in the top to vent it until you get to sit down and eat it.
I don't know of any Chippies up on the Sunny myself, great or crappy lol. However, the one thing I do know is that you need to be choosing Snapper for your fish when doing an Aussie-style Fisha and Chips. Now, the whole knife and fork thing with Fish and Chips, just not on guys. I mean, the whole point of the batter is to create a handle to hold onto the Fish with lol. Watching a Brit use a knife and fork for Fish and Chips is like watching an Italian eating Pizza with a knife and fork or someone eating a Sausage Roll with a knife and fork lol.
The best fish n chips I had was as a child in the 60s,.It probably was more closer to British style .Of course the chips were loaded with vinegar and salt and all was wrapped in yesterdays news paper.
The fish and chip shop down the road from me uses lard in there fryers instead of oil and it makes everything more crispy. I have also found if I can't finish it I put it in the fridge and the fish batter is still crunchy cold and the chips just need a couple of min in the air fryer and they are good as new too. I LOVE the man bun and my son is now growing his out to.
Hey Guys, if your looking for some amazing Ozzie fish and chips on the Sunny Coast then check out the Portside Seafood Restaurant at the marina in Minyama near the Kawana Waters Hotel. It's an old school Mom & Pop place, very reasonably priced, no frills joint with that serves locally caught reef fish and the fish is amazing. Try the Red Emperor or Snapper either crumbed or battered and the best thing is that do takeaway so you can order the food then take a walk down to Point Cartwright and have a seafood picnic at your leisure, watch the boats coming in and out of the river mouth, it's dog friendly too. Enjoy x
Coles has a UK section too now. I was thinking the same thing about that drink. I am sure I have seen it in one of those foreign food import sections. Some stores are better stocked than others too.
your dog is soo dang cute!! becareful of magpies in magpie season with him on your back/ Its such a joy to see you both fall in love with this country/
Thank you so much for your comment! We have already had a run in with the very friendly magpies 😅 We got swooped riding a bike, all safe but made us very aware of them. We will keep our eyes out for them on walk with Picco too ❤️
You can buy those packets of curry sauce at coles. It ok but I would rather have tomato or bbq sauce. In NZ we have a chip buttie which chips in a hot dog bun. But you must have tomato sauce with it. Malt vinegar is a big thing too
Something you'll find more in South Australia that is quite British in origin is the pie floater, an Aussie meat pie served upside down in a bowl of pea soup with a big blob of tomato sauce on top, I love it...
How funny. You guys were like we were when living in the UK in the 2000's. Whenever any of our countrymen were going to London there would be a flurry of orders put in for their visit to the Aussie shop located in Covent Garden. I rang them once as there's was a rumour spreading around the Aussie camps that the shop had recently started stocking bullet style Aussie Dim Sims. The bloke on the phone said do you know how many calls and walk-ins we're getting for bloody dim sims at the moment, No we don't have them, it's a bloody rumour someone started haha. He then said we're making enquiries to try and get them in though. You beauty! The people had spoken. Can't wait for you guys to try a Chokito ;). P.s. I am a 6'5' Aussie blokey bloke, bearded with have long hair I also wear in bun. Don't listen to the baldies giving you crap, they're just missing their follicles.
I noticed a sign on one of the shop windows that said Brightwater. SO is the Frier of Whitby at the Brightwater Shpping Centre? No it is still Mushy Peas but Aussies usually have it in a pie
@terricarr5253 next time I am up on Sunny Coast I am definitely on my way to Frier of Whitby at Mountain Creek. Sounds Yum. Family are always looking for ' the best Fish n Chips.
Agreed, love vinegar on chip, or plain with salt; Haven't had a Scotch egg in maybe 30 years, looked up how to make them, keep forgetting to make them...
I watch a channel called "The MacMaster" (Lee Davey from Mansfield), and he frequently tries different chippies from around his local area, and along the west coast of England. He came to Australia (Perth) in January this year, and then went to Sydney. He was quite impressed with our version of fish and chips.
The plants are Staghorns and are an epiphyte. They grow on the tree but don't harm it. Here at our place we have a rare epiphytic orchid, the Butterfly Orchid
The reason a lot of fish and chip shops use white vinegar is that is what the pickled onions they buy come with and they use it instead of buying vinegar.
I’ve just learned something interesting!! My parents lived in London for several years in the early to mid sixties (I love being able to tell people that my dad was a pirate, because he worked on a pirate radio ship) As a child, growing up in Tassie, one of my favourite things was “dad’s special sauce” which he used to make & put on top of plain pasta it looks very similar to your curry sauce for chips!! Although dad added cheese to his…..

Someone has led you up the Garden Path. We have Brown Vinefsr on Chips, not White. And our Chips are hand cut and cooked twice. The takeaways that do Pre-cut Chips etc are just lazy.
They are called "Stag Horns" or "Stag Heads" and they are not harmful to trees. They are epiphites ,and I have a big one on my big Mango tree. People mount them on trees in Australia.

I agree with you Joe, we live in a stunning country, and tend to take it for granted...Thanks for reminding us all....
Those chips brought back some very old memories, the second I saw them I remembered having these when I was a kid, back over 50 years ago. That was the weirdest feeling, thanks for that, you've made my week. 👍👍👍 I'll now have to try my fish and chips with curry sauce and maybe mushy peas. The gravy? maybe by itself for the time being, can't convert too quickly. 😆😆😆
Good Aus fish & chip shops the chips will be hand cut, that was expected up until 20-30 years ago, but unfortunately now a lot of places don't bother. Macca's skinny fries changed everything as they gradually opened around the country.
That was interesting, I’m not sure about the fried mars bar, I’m sure I could feel my arteries hardening just by looking at it!🤣 Keep up the great work we’re loving the vlogs! 😘
IT'S so easy to make rice pudding. make it at home yourself much cheaper. the little furry fella is getting to be a big of a star. SSSSSO CUTE. Omg you;re making me think that Britain has been transported to the south pacific, Keep the blogs up.Thank you
Without a doubt, the traditional British hand-cut style chips, especially cooked in beef tallow, are by far superior to the usual frozen garbage that most Chippies now serve up here in Oz. Growing up in Oz, that's how the chips were always done where I come from. No such thing as frozen chips back then lol. Sadly, as with most things, mediocracy has crept in over the years and that wonderful tradition of hand cut chips done in beef tallow has now been lost to the convenience of the frozen garbage done in cheap, tasteless oil in this country. However, I guess we deserve what we are all prepared to accept. Tasteless Mediocracy ....... YUMMY!
Aussie cordial company since 1874, Bickfords "Mango Coconut Slash" is my fav cordial. It's stunning stuff - a must try along with other flavors. $5 a bottle in major supermarkets. Cheers from Sydney.
I just looked up a couple of recipes for the curry sauce and it appears to be a mix of Chinese and Indian spices. It might be a bit mild for my taste as I mix mayonnaise with wasabi to put on my fish but just put malt vinegar on the chips.
I’m sure others have mentioned this, but both Woolworths and Coles at least in Brisbane North of Brisbane have a British Irish section and it has a lot of this stuff in there. And at a cheaper price than in this shop. Also malt vinegar is just available in the vinegar section at all woollies and Coles and again it’s a lot cheaper than there. It might be worth just taking some time to go through the supermarket to see that even in the regular areas there’s some British products.
Here’s a bit of trivia for you.Did you know that the vinegar that is there in British fish and chip shops is not actually a vinegar. It’s a concoction made up of water, acetic acid and flavourings such as caramel.
Hi Joe and Kody, thank you for taking the time to share your Coolum Seafood experience. It was lovely meeting you both and glad I was able to help you. I am a knife or fork man too so totally get it. We call them mushy peas, too. You can buy them in cans. If you ever get to visit Maryborough in Qld (near Hervey Bay which is a nice tourist place), you have to try the chips from Ivey's Chicken 'n' Carvery at Tinana. Dear as poison, but they are the best chips I have ever eaten anywhere. They are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. You mentioned Sunday roast, well Ivey's has chicken, pork and beef roasts (sadly they stopped their lamb roasts) with roasted potatoes (not very good) and roasted pumpkin, potato bake, cauliflower and cheese, peas, carrots and gravy (you choose your own veg). It has a couple of outdoor tables but is primarily take away. Just keep it in mind in case you are ever up this way. And there is a fish and chip shop in Walker st that gives you really large pieces of barramundi and large potato scallops. Their hamburgers - except for the buns on them, which taste fine but are a bit flimsy - are wonderful and substantial. Just ask them not to put grated carrot on them. Adelaide in South Australia has what they call "pie floaters", which are a meat pie sitting in a bed of mushy peas. I believe it's Harry's Cafe de Wheels that sells them, although they might be available elsewhere. All over teh country you can get a pie and peas, which is a normal mince pie and inside the pastry it's topped with mushy peas. By the way, you just say the Sunshine Coast, but that's a huge area. Can you define the actual places? And where is that fish and chip shop?

English curry has been adapted from the times when the Brits were in India. In Australia, we do Indian dishes because there are lots of Indians living in Australia who have set up restaurants.
Curry is an English word (Hundreds of years before the U.K even knew about india); The English brought Chilli's to India, before chillis they used pepper, as in salt and pepper (and a lot more), several kinds of Curry were invented by the U.K.
I don't know how to break this to you but Aussies have chips and gravy as one combined meal option, it's especially good with chicken salt and like your curry sauce the gravy you get from chip shops in Aus is very much a different taste. We have everything from roast hot packs to salt and vinegar chips. We don't tend to mush our peas but peas are a staple in schnitzel packs and roast packs. Also there are a lot of fish and chip places that make their own hand cut chips. Wedges which are an experience in themselves if the chip shop knows what it is doing, especially with a bit of sweet chili sauce. One of the best things to eat in Aus from the takeaway is something called AB but I've only seen it in South Australia. It's rotisserie yiros meat with chips topped with tomato sauce, bbq sauce and garlic sauce. Done well it's bloody outstanding.
One of my guilty pleasures when I get over to the UK is to have fish and chips or some haggis and chips, Aussie fish and chips are so bland in comparison, problem is Brit fish and chips are super expensive. And definitely get in the habit of sunscreen 👍 it’s not even summer yet.
You have to come to Melbourne for traditional Australian fish and chips. They came about when the Greeks came as migrants after the war and set up their small businesses with good quality fish and choices like grilling fish which led to people abandoning English style fryers Tha were already here . In Aussie fish and chip shops you will find Mediterranean salads because of the Greek influence. So come on down… to Melbourne yes MELBOURNE I’m sure you’ve heard of us.

We have potato scallops too. Depending on what state you live in, in Melbourne we call them potato cakes.

Thank you for your kind words, and appreciate your concern, Kody here - I’ll keep that in mind 🙌😊

You have to go to England to taste the fare before making any wild claims. Most fish and chip shops in Oz serve crappy local fish like hoki or barramundi, which is devoid of taste. Cod is the only true fish to use in fish and chips.

I would try the British-style fish'n'chips for sure.

The fish and chip shop down the road from me uses lard in there fryers instead of oil and it makes everything more crispy. I have also found if I can't finish it I put it in the fridge and the fish batter is still crunchy cold and the chips just need a couple of min in the air fryer and they are good as new too.
