This slows right turners, improves visibility, and forces you to take the lane, which is what you should be doing for your safety anyway, and as a bonus it helps the drivers understand that you must. That's keeping you from getting right hooked and making you more visible to would-be red light runners. The problem here is you've been doing it wrong. Take the lane. And wet paint? Really? Yes that driver was forced to slow. Perfect.

I do sometimes take the lane, when there is a reason to. But the point here is the intersection was needlessly complicated, and it was done with complete disregard for the presence or existence of cyclists. This was a normal intersection before and was perfectly safe to traverse. Now, it looks like a steampunk maze.

Also ... you mention light runners. There is no light here, it is a sidestreet with a stopsign that comes out onto a main road.

@@thelonerider5644 You mentioned the light moving back in your video. I guess you meant the sign. Big difference. This isn't more complicated though, it's more simplified. With the previous setup you had fake right turn lanes with potential for two abreast traffic stopping or not at slightly different times (including the cyclist) confusing priority. I just don't see the problem or the maze.

@@bigring6424 I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree. I see what you are saying, but as someone who rides thru this intersection I have not seen the benefits you have suggested. I also have seen this and many other intersections needlessly altered in ways that remove manuevering room, narrow the lanes resulting in drivers overtaking too close and often the changes are done with no regard for cyclists.
But that is the whole point of this medium, for different ideas about these subjects to get voiced. Thank you for your observations, and ride safe!

@@thelonerider5644 Drivers don't overtake too close if you take the lane. You should never being allowing overtakes while entering a junction.
