I really wish they'd just go back to having fewer counterspell effects overall. I'd rather deal with Counterspell x4 than 600 counterspells with more limited (but still not niche) usage. Decks like Simic flash are just really unfun to play against, even when you win.
This is similar to a Dimir Mill deck I used for a fair bit this standard. A few cards that I found value in with this deck are: Scheming symmetry- A good tutor that removes its own downside with a mill deck (especially with Ashiok). Also, plays so well with Kefnet. When your opponent figures out that they shouldn't grab their best card for fear of mill, just don't mill them to keep them wondering. Wall of lost thought- a great way to slow down aggro, can also be bounced with a tyrant's scorn for reactivation. Turn 3 scheming symmetry into wall, is very nice. Aid the fallen- a single copy has gotten me out of many jams. When your bond of insight hits your tucked Kefnet, getting it (and Ashiok) back to hand is a big gain.

The Planeswalker you used is probably definitely going to become part of it. I just want to be an all around nightmare to play against lmao
Mill is not gone. i have faced many mill decks in the 2020 event. And they are not that bad. Bonds of Insight, God Eternal, Drowned secrets, Ashiok, That Wall. Lots of ways to still mill people.

What are some good cards coming up in ELD that slot in nicely into this deck? Haven’t been keeping up with the spoilers. Any cards in particular that ‘wow’ you enough to put in to upgrade once they release?
CovertGoBlue Came across “Didn’t Say Please” and “Merfolk Secretkeeper” after a quick scroll through the subreddit. Didn’t Say Please is functionally identical to Thought Collapse, and considering you didn’t include that I’d assume it’s in your opinion this deck doesn’t really have a place for a counterspell; I wouldn’t really know what I’d swap it out for anyway. Merfolk Secretkeeper is another story, however. Its adventure is “Target player puts the top four cards of their library into their graveyard” for U. If Kefnet will be able to copy adventures, even better, now you can make your opponent dump 8 cards for only 2 mana. The Secretkeeper itself is okay, it’s a 0/4 for U. After playing I’d say the most glaring issue is that there are no proper answers for big creatures as it currently exists. It’s a good deck, I won most of the time and I never even really play mill, but all the losses felt avoidable if only I had an answer for big creatures like I do Elderspell for planeswalkers. Maybe Didn’t Say Please or Thought Collapse would be good to include in that sense. This deck is pretty decent at peeping at your opponent’s hand, so maybe after spotting a big threat with a Thought Erasure or Legion’s End early on, one could remember to leave 3 mana open to counter said threat later AND mill at the same time. Just something to be considered. The only other option I could think of was including an actual removal spell, but none come to mind that also mill your opponent at the same time, so I’d probably go for a counterspell because of the overall versatility. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it, though.
What's the point of mill? It's basically burn but treating there deck like their lifetotal. So its slower. Edit: also I would use Lillian's triumph. Great against simic flash and feather.
Joseph Fitzpatrick mill puts your opponent in a position where they can’t rely on draws or putting cards on top. You make your opponent afraid of their deck as well as yours. It’s a beautiful fear tactic
@@ComboBreakerMLP why cant they rely on draws? The only good thing seems like ashiok for graveyard hate and taking away library searching. Otherwise whether I'm control or aggro most the time I'm happy to let the opponent play mill card to get ahead on tempo.
Right now in Standard, the point is that you're killing the opponent's creatures/spells before they even get to play them. It's particularly good against creatures that are hard to deal with, like the God Eternals, Indestructible and Hexproof. Plus, the opponent can't really rely on their deck anymore, 'cause there's a good chance what they're looking for is going into the grave sooner or later, and if that's their win-con, they're screwed if they have no way to bring it back. Many Control decks also have a hard time against Mill, 'cause they're usually not built to deal with it and usually rely on finding a specific card to win the game Now, there was a time in MTG where certain cards would have improved effects once either you or the opponent had X cards in their graveyard. Right now, there's none. There also used to be a higher amount of cards that had some kind of effect *and* milled. Right now, there's only Bond of Insight and Enter the God Eternals. So it wasn't just "mill the opponent down to 0". Problem is that, for a very long time, there hasn't been any Mill synergy in Standard, because people complained so much about alternate win-cons (and still complain today). At least Eldraine is bringing back Mill synergy so that milling isn't your sole win condition, but it will still be the least supported strategy.
I personally would throw in a few "Thought Collapse s" and a single "Clear the Mind". Also, I question the usefulness of the "Cryptic Caves". Tapping one and sacrificing another land for a single card draw doesn't seem very efficient. Maybe "Emergence Zone " to allow for a flash play if your opponent drops a lot of hasted critters on you would be better.
The first deck I made for the event was essentially a budget version of this. Probably a bit too budget, I didn't win a lot and ended up scrapping the deck. But I didn't feel like spending a bunch of wildcards for an event that's not gonna be around long just before the new set comes out.
@@covertgoblue I agree, but if you use Scheming Symmetry, then immediately mill it seems really good.
