Dear Alberto! Wow! This is a historic event! The BIG BOY is alive and well again! This is the first run since July 1961! Bravo! It is certainly a beauty Alberto, a testimony to your patience and skill! Give my kind regards to your family and Lucio also! Maybe we will see you again someday! Kind Regards, Steve Gill
I love the questions. Live Steam has been so underground for so many decades and with UA-cam everybody wants in on this hobby. I can't blame anybody because model trains are a kick in the butt especially ones you can ride.
Hey, your one set of drivers and running gear was locking up while you are moving! Especially when you were backing up end of video. You are going to put flat spots on your wheels!
What a truely amazing piece of work. WOW The skill, craftsmanship, time & patience to scratch build this just blows my mind! Kudo's on a 10star vid as well. Love the track plan of you layout. Looking forward to seeing further progress on the steam crane, keep up the great work!
Dear Alberto, I visited your page from time to time following the building of this machine. Congratulations for the first runs, you did a very good job! Kind Regards, Csaba
I think I saw this guys pad on old geezers cribs, which is a TV show I just made up. ha ha wow that's great, I really love to see things like that, the craftsmanship is awe inspiring.
@Dappdude This is actually a "two in one" loco. The wheel sets are 4-8-8-4. Two sets of independent engines in this locomotive on the two sets of 8-8 wheels. Look at the first start of the clip, the steam from the cylinders come from both the front end and at about in the middle of the locomotive from the second set of cylinders. This is one Masterpiece of a replica, very well done!!
Union Pacific just announced on their website that they have reacquired Big Boy 4014 from a California museum, and UP intends to restore it to operating condition in the next few years.
@albertocelot Must be almost priceless. We used to have a miniture railroad near where I live, the loco's were about twice the gauge of yours but they had a live steam Bigboy there. That lcoo alone made somewhere in the region of a million GBP's when all of the RR and its rolling stock was sold off to make room for holiday lets / apartments.
Oops! I forgot to rate the video! It is a 10 star! But there are only 5 stars to choose from! I love the sound of the Big Boy's whistle! Kind Regards, Steve
I know this post is very old but this loco is not so small. It probably weights over 300 lbs not including engine. You can mount a whistle under the running board that sounds very good.
@Dappdude He's probably got the (steam?) brake on the back unit, and no brake on the front unit? Hence the drivers on the rear unit locking up as he came to a stop, I'd guess.
The loco was being run-in and the circuit isn't well levelled, so due to the different frictions the two sets of driving wheels can slip or even stall in some moments. It needs to run for some time to "stretch the wheels"
Hi Alberto, Toni, Dianne, and I love that scene where you go through the flowered tunnel. Are those roses? Very family oriented video! Uncommon today. So we are thankful for the video. Did Lucio do the filming? Kind Regards, Steve
I had the luck to see this amazing loco in Karlsruhe, January 2011. I am deeply impressed by the craftmanship. Congratulations! Now a question: What are you constructing after this jewel? It must be difficult to find a new challenge after this? Kind regards from Denmark
Thank you for your kind words. Now I'm building a 1" scale 5" gauge Bucyrus Erie 250 Ton railway steam crane. You can look at my website (you can find it in my profile) at the page "In costruzione"
That track looks well run-in. I'm assuming this isn't your first locomotive. What else do you have that you aren't sharing with us? This one is a beauty.
Now that's an amazing piece of engineering! You've realy built a fanatastic machine. However, it caught my attention that the two driver sets never remain synchonised. At 4:25, the rear driver set can even be seen standing still, while the locomotive is moving. How come those two driver sets move at different speeds?
@albertocelot I can't read it coz its not in English, Did you have to go to a factory to bend and make the metal or did you do it yourself with machines of your know? Coz i love all sorts of model trains and i was wondering what sort of job would help me witht that, i love cad and maths so its in my area of work to
This is awesome! Unfortunately I will never be able to afford one ,but I am just curious as to how much the locomotive weighs and how much weight can it actually pull with the tractive effort it produces?
@Jasey1258 My job was Electronic Engineering (no mechanics!), now I'm retired. For the full story of my Big Boy look at my website ferroviefelettane.it
Dear Sir, I am a railway enthusiast and I also have interest in rail modelling and live steam locos. I would love to see your locomotive, given the chance. Are you a member of any live steamers society?
DJ Scottdog there is a definite relationship between square footage in the firebox and boiler flue area. it worked well in the full size bigboys, so scaleing it down does not change that ratio. ..only concern here is a good exhaust nozzle design to pull the draft thru the boiler.
DJ Scottdog im not sure what this particular model runs on? being how i never see smoke, i would assume oil, or propane fired?......but getting coal to the front of the firebox is not a big deal in a model.....make sure your firebox door is big enough, and have a shovel and a poker with long handles
but there is a very good reason that only models are operating.and it is bigboys are just to enormous to operate practically sure on a one mile straight track that might work but come on that would be as much torture to a big boy as sitting in a park.
@albertocelot id pay 10000 for that if your willing to sell it , some one said to me a live steam bib boy wouldn't work cos its difficult to get enough coal or oil into the back of the firebox but obviously it dose
Dear Alberto!

The retirement dream for old guys is to just play with toys. Being a kid will never go away no matter how old you are.
YOU ARE SOOOOOOOOOOO RIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the questions. Live Steam has been so underground for so many decades and with UA-cam everybody wants in on this hobby. I can't blame anybody because model trains are a kick in the butt especially ones you can ride.
Everybody loves American steam locomotives and this one sure is a beauty.

That is awesome! Thanks for taking the time to share the sights and sounds with us. Nothing cooler than a operating Big Boy that size. :)
I think I saw this guys pad on old geezers cribs, which is a TV show I just made up. ha ha wow that's great, I really love to see things like that, the craftsmanship is awe inspiring.
that "old geezer" would probably kick your lilly ass!
probably as i have cerebral palsy and am confined to a wheel chair.
@@yakacm I literally hollered with a burst of laughter when I read your comment!😂😂😂😂

@albertocelot I mean, I will never be able to afford such an elegant locomotive. You're a lucky, smart, and creative man.
Union Pacific just announced on their website that they have reacquired Big Boy 4014 from a California museum, and UP intends to restore it to operating condition in the next few years.
That is an outstanding piece of work! Fantastic!!!!! Thanks for sharing with us.

She's a beautiful job.!!!
Incredible model of an incredible locomotive
All i can say is WOWWWWW.... Wish i had that !!! nice setup and great video... keep up the good work...
Very impressive! Beautiful locomotive!!!
As a machininst, you have my respect.
if that's your back garden railway then your one of the luckiest guys in the word
Oops! I forgot to rate the video! It is a 10 star! But there are only 5 stars to choose from! I love the sound of the Big Boy's whistle!

and they say money cant buy happiness
thats the best 5"bigboy about good on you mate
Thank you Steve, too good of you!! Alberto
That is some kind of wonderful 🤗..👍
Sir, You are a genius
That is amazing awesome you guys boy are amazing 🤯
Complimenti, Fantastica!!!!
This is a good news!!!
Thank you
hello alberto do you open to the public ? if so when ?
Looks like alot of fun :)
That;s a nice little Big Boy you got there lol the only problem is a Hancock 3 chime whistle would almost be just as big as the loco itself XD
I know this post is very old but this loco is not so small. It probably weights over 300 lbs not including engine. You can mount a whistle under the running board that sounds very good.
Hi Steve,
yes, they are roses. The filming was made by Rina.
All the best to you, Dianne and Toni

I'd like to think someone at UP Steam stumbled across this video and went 'Hold My Beer'.

Stunning locomotive, did it have plans or was it all scaling down
She is beautiful!!!
Grande!
How could I get my hands on your set of plans for this fabulous model , congrats on such a great build
That track looks well run-in. I'm assuming this isn't your first locomotive. What else do you have that you aren't sharing with us?
This one is a beauty.
I know what I want for Christmas!

Very impressive model! Now it's finished what is your next project?
FANTASTICA
is this a kit or do u have to make all the parts urself
gosto de apreciar os trens de qualquer tipo, mas que vontade de ter um desses e voltar ser criança ou ter mais de 65 anos e ser RICO e ter um desses.
This is awesome! Unfortunately I will never be able to afford one ,but I am just curious as to how much the locomotive weighs and how much weight can it actually pull with the tractive effort it produces?
I never made the measurements, however the estimated weight of loco plus tender is around 500 kg
Now I'm working on a Bucyrus Erie 250 Ton Steam Railway Crane in 5" gauge.
to bad we dont have a running life size one they are all static pieces in museums now
@Jasey1258 My job was Electronic Engineering (no mechanics!), now I'm retired. For the full story of my Big Boy look at my website ferroviefelettane.it
so where do u keep the engines at night or in storms
I'm curious,,,, what does something like that cost including man hours to build it???? That's not your typical Bowser HO scale kit..............
este video es fantastico y mañana me boy a conprar esa locomotora big boy y boy a acer una maqueta de trenes bic boys
What is your job? Like you would have needed experience to know how to build it and design it?
how and where do you guys find the information and or kits to build theses im very interested
@paullubliner The ratio is 1:11.3
Dear Sir,
I am a railway enthusiast and I also have interest in rail modelling and live steam locos. I would love to see your locomotive, given the chance. Are you a member of any live steamers society?
@PRR5406 Thank you, my English is not so good!
How much and where did u get this
i was told this couldnt be done due to the length of the boiler but this is awesome
what does the length of the boiler have anything to do with it?
cos the fire box is only at one end and wouldn't heat the other end quick enough
DJ Scottdog there is a definite relationship between square footage in the firebox and boiler flue area. it worked well in the full size bigboys, so scaleing it down does not change that ratio. ..only concern here is a good exhaust nozzle design to pull the draft thru the boiler.
and getting coal to the front of the fire box though i am aware they run on oil but does the model ?
DJ Scottdog im not sure what this particular model runs on? being how i never see smoke, i would assume oil, or propane fired?......but getting coal to the front of the firebox is not a big deal in a model.....make sure your firebox door is big enough, and have a shovel and a poker with long handles
is that home made or bought if it is bought i want one if it is home made than can you make me one
how much did that engine cost?
how much did just that engine cost?????
but there is a very good reason that only models are operating.and it is bigboys are just to enormous to operate practically sure on a one mile straight track that might work but come on that would be as much torture to a big boy as sitting in a park.
Hank Hill would be proud.
holy crap!!!!
rich OR poor it is good to have money.
what is it's fuel source?
@albertocelot not lookin to buy... just want to knoe the cost
I made my own plans starting from the original drawings
@lewis9968
I made my own plans in 3D CAD starting from the original drawings
@PRR5406
What do you mean?
I don't know, I never tried
r u on wellfare...?
@TheRealZUIKAKU
I have no idea...........
how much are you selling it for? :)
I could sell it to a museum........
not to be rude but i think you need to get a better whistle.
How much does it cost to make the engens
Alot i know its probably in the thousands
You're talking 20,000 to 50,000 dollars, maybe more.
Dip Boys it about 5-10 thousand for a small locomotive but the biggest locos cost about 30-40 thousand
@@josephfoster3819 This one with this level of detail would cost several hundred thousand us dollars to have custom built.
No, mine is a private circuit
RELY COOL ALTHO I PERFER 7.5
bellissimo bellissimo.
pottete vedere il mio treni con youtube
Gracie
@albertocelot id pay 10000 for that if your willing to sell it , some one said to me a live steam bib boy wouldn't work cos its difficult to get enough coal or oil into the back of the firebox but obviously it dose
LPG gas (propane)
@coryharvey3000
I made it, but I have no idea, make me an offer!
no, because it could be very dangerous!
Write me into your will, please.
Had to cost a fortune.
