Good to see this actually works as advertised. I deliver to a lot of rural areas, and being out on the range sometimes means OUT OF range. I got lost in Ohio awhile back because this trailer park had no Data service whatsoever, and I had NO offline map of the area. I downloaded an offline map of the delivery area once I read about the feature, and this video confirms that it will work the same way I hoped it would. I have 2 extra phones, and being able to use one as a dedicated GPS device is AWESOME.
Thank you so much. For years I have written out directions to get to anywhere new (pass 2 streets on the left .... go through roundabout ... pass gas station ... etc. etc.!!). I have bought myself a new phone at last ((my old one was so slow) and now I will follow your instructions on how to use my phone as a GPS. Your explanation was clear and I can't wait to get started. gps is great ! I like hiking, it's always no signal in the forest, download a map first is very helpful and important !
I have a Huawei Mate 9 and I am pretty sure every phone that has a magnet compass in your phone than you can pretty much have Google maps on your phone and be able to download maps
I use this offline often on an old phone without data at all. Works just fine.
Excellent video...I didn't know I could use it offline. I live in Nevada, USA and it's really easy to get lost - some of the roads don't have signs. And, reception is not all that good. Thanks Daniel. One more thing: ignore the hateful comments. It was an informative tutorial. Thank you.
my friend the easy way is: go to google maps write the address, press start, and then go to you phone settings and turn off the data mobile and you will travel off line, no data charges in all

That's true for ad hoc use of offline navigation, but if you download the map to permanent storage you can bypass any need for a WiFi session to get going.

Actually I've uninstalled my Google Maps since I bought my phone.
At first, I thought that this app can only be used with internet connect until someone informed me about this. I didn't know that you can navigate through this map without internet connection so I've checked it and came up to your video then yeah, I installed it again :)
oh damn I wish I knew this when I arrived in Tokyo, we used pocket wifi but I arrived way earlier than the others. So I set on a journey from Narita to Ikebukuro. Spent 12 hours walking around there looking for our house. Thanks a lot though Daniel, this will be handy in Seoul

OMG I have travelled the world using Google Maps and never had to do any of this.....Start Google Maps up in a wifi area. Put in your destination. Press go and Google Maps will work without a sim or wifi all the way to your destination. The app has its own built in satellite system. Thanks.

My question is, is it possible to find out my current location without internet if in the offline region? I have used the offline stuff but the only problem I've faced is finding out current location when offline. Is it possible or is it just a problem of my phone?

i traveled all over the world and if you need a map ,...go to a car rental place and they might give you a map if you ask nice ! mind they are rudimentary .

@without fuen you need to DOWNLOAD the offline area you wish to navigate first. Then use your phone's built in GPS and that does use your phone's mobile data which means it is free.

I am not an expert, but I think you set download to SD, you should be able to do it. and by the way, I like Maps.Me even better.
Yes, thanks, I discovered how to do it. Click on Menu, Offline Maps (my version of Android on a cheap Samsung phone), hit the settings (toothed wheel on the top right corner) and you can find Storage Preferences. You can use SD card or phone storage. You will also find Download Preferences. I have selected Over Wifi only so as to save my data allowance.
