Good information to know. Thanks. I will try this technique next year. I have heavy clay with high iron content soil. Plus I am on a well with high iron in the water. I use a water softner for house water. I do composting and have amended the raised beds over the last 8 years. I’ve dug French drains, swales & berms to facilitate drainage. Not what I wanted to do in my retirement. Some years my vegetables do well and other years, like last year, root rot was the winner, way too much rain. My last apple tree has a disease causing the trunk to split, a few inches above the root stock. I have to research what it is. It has been a challenge to grow things.

Clay soil can be a challenge especially if you plant too deep. We have clay in some areas and it is more well draining in others. It can also be helpful to choose a rootstock adapted for heavy soils. Good luck with your orchard and thanks for watching:)

Good Method. I have same situation planted 3 years ago. Have u succesfull to live the tree over 10 years? I heard that what ever can be done Tree will die after 5/10 years in clay soil if it is planted of it is not wild.

Absolutely I have a number of trees over 20 years that are still productive. Another thing to consider is choosing a rootstock adapted to heavy wet soils. Good luck and thanks for watching.
