Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

G'day Everyone, to add to my little chat (I had at the end of this video), thanks again for your ongoing support! I'm really proud of the gardening community here on UA-cam you make it a pleasure to be a content creator and part of this "flourishing club" of online gardeners. Cheers :)
Hi Mark…you look well and I’m so happy for the family assisting…hope to see them in your vids too! 💖from NECoast 🇦🇺🤗
PS We are looking forward to buying your book. You have taught us so much just by watching your channel for years. Now just need to learn how to edit our own videos 😅
You should have your own TV Show, Mark's backyard lol
@@RAM_845 I agree!!
g, day mate i live in outer east Melborne big back yard, now going to retire. early what can put in the ground this month Aprill? many years ago i did grow stuff and had chickens. and that's funny all my adult kids are now vegetarians. weirdos LOL
Nina's delightful reaction to your thoughtful and kind gesture of letting her have the first Panama Berry was wonderful! Thanks Mark for your informative videos and great "down under" humor sprinkled through them. The idea of using a old stump to plant over is brilliant.
Using old stumps is exactly what nature does too. In my little bit of woodland, where the previous owners cut down trees and then left the stumps behind, seedlings of other trees have germinated on top of the stumps and grew into large trees. It doesn't make them any more susceptible to wind damage or drought or anything like that. These new trees seem perfectly happy to take on these stumps as nursery pots.
@@debbiehenri345 When we lived in Northwest USA I was awed at seeing ancient trees that had fallen many decades ago acting as nursery trees for younger saplings that were themselves good size trees. It is indeed natures way of regeneration, a circle of life
A lot of brilliant ideas originate in someone looking at a load of work and thinking, hmmmmm.....
His a absolute gentleman with that thoughtful gesture
I did the same with our first purple podded pea and our first black cherry tomato, this is what you do with your loved one, you put them first... ish :)
It's good to see you, Mark. Please don't apologize for taking time off to rejuvenate. We are loyal fans and you have our support no matter what. You're a good man with a highly informative and entertaining channel.👍
Thank you, Teresa; that's very nice of you, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment. All the best :)
Good to see you back Mark, always look after you first.😊
Welcome back, Mark! Authentic is the only way to be! You don’t need to explain, but those of us who stayed to the end really appreciate the thoughtful content.
Thank you Lanna! And thanks for your understanding (and staying till the end). All the best :)
I'm in college in America at a pristine university and I value so much from your work that I have been using your techniques on my farm since 2021. I love your videos so much that OUR university is using your videos to learn about sustainable farming. I wish you can see this so you understand your impact from across the globe. Let it be known that your videos are teaching university students here in America!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
That's incredible🙏
That's awesome to hear Nick! Well, I'm happy and honoured that my backyard vids are received so positively in such learning institutions. Thank you and all the best :)
Just make a collective growing project/growing diary with photos and videos and simply send him a link or something. Shouldn't be too much of a problem and everyone involved will learn a lot and have great fun!
Shouldn't he be getting a check in the mail??? Being a college educator... 🤑
Nina's face lighting up when you handed her the berry was just about AWESOME!!!!! And of course the ending is spot on! And am so excited for what's to come!!!
Hey hey Mntdewmania! Yeah, Nina always appreciates a fresh berry but the Panamas are one of her favs. I see you are growing crops (wheat, carrots, berries etc) and fishing in your last video - that's cool as! I'm no gamer (I'd be hopeless at it) however your online farming looks fun. Thanks for saying G'day and all the best, cheers :)
Mark, its so nice to see your face again. Your videos are known even to my adult sons who arent really into gardening. You always bring a smile to everyones face with your friendly demeanor. You deserve the time you need to charge those batteries and do all the things you need to do around home! I for one am just so grateful you are still around on you tube for all of us. We are so lucky to have you, so please know we appreciate you! But always take the time for yourself before giving to us. ❤
I want to send a big thank you to you, Mark. Thanks for all the effort you've put into making these videos over the years. You've been an incredible influence in my journey into gardening and self sufficiency. Your gardening methods have been so applicable to my small gardening area. I've really learned to bend the "rules" of gardening with oversowing and growing cooler crops in the shade of my summer crops along with many more lessons learned from your content. I've passed much of this information to friends and family and my little one is excited to get into it in the garden as well. Although I may not be self sufficient in everything I'm glad to be self sufficient in something.
G'day Jonathan and thank you for the kind feedback. Yes, bending 'rules' and experimenting with gardening is part of the fun. It can also help with personal discovery by doing, solving, and creating something on our own, which can be enormously satisfying! It's great to hear how you are sharing this info with friends and family (especially young ones) as the earlier we start the better I reckon... Cheers :)
Absolutely great to have you back Mark, even in the UK with our massively different climate, we learn so much from you brilliant videos. I for one can't wait for the book. Thanks so much and keep up the excellent work, Les
G'day Les and thank you! We are slowly cooling down here as you are thawing out... Here's to a beautiful mild UK summer on the way! Cheers :)
Welcome back Mark! I also got back into it! Very pleased with You taking a professional break and coming back to your passion 100% INTO IT! Thanks for sticking with us, looking forward to the Growing Season!!
Edit: typos lol
Thanks Francisco! Good to hear you getting back into it also. All the best :)
Ten thousand people gave you a thumbs up. We appreciate your contribution to our gardening success. You are such an earthy, genuine person, looking forward to your book, maybe a few family members included in UA-cam. Greetings from South Africa!
No excuses just life. A life I am grateful for, thank you Mark ❤
Mark you are amazing! You seem to grow EVERYTHING lol. I really appreciate and enjoy you taking us on the tours through your garden, it's a joy to see how other folks do things. No worries at all about needing time to recharge, everyone needs that time. Thanks for another great video!
Thank you! Well, I'm trying to grow "everything", lol... I can't help myself - if I see some food crop I haven't grown before, I just have to have a go! All the best :)
Hi Nina!! So nice to see you! You have a pretty brilliant husband. I learn so much from every one of his videos. I’m gonna do this and plant some Panama berry trees on my farm. Thanks for sharing him with the rest of the world. ❤
Nina is pretty brilliant too!
Good to see you again, Mark! Even though my climate here in eastern Nebraska is far different from yours, you remain one of my favorite gardening UA-camrs.
Thank you Jack! I also watch and listen to gardeners in different climates because there's always some gem piece of info that can be applied anywhere to improve a harvest! All the best :)
Panhandle Nebraska here. Trying to figure out what the best trees to plant are.
Great to have you back mate! Absolutely so important to take breaks and put in the work behind the scenes so you can make future content you’re proud of. I never mind the breaks, you work hard and I’m so grateful for all the content you share. Thanks 🙏🏻
Even if you only posted once a year I'd still be here for your positive attitude and patient teachings. Keep up the enjoyable content, good luck with the book, and g'day!
Hi Mark , always take time to do what you need for yourself first. I live in Canada and love your videos. Your videos gives me all sort of ideas for my gardens and the information on gardening you share is worth it's weight in gold ! Take Care
Another fellow Canadian here. I couldn't agree more. Mark really is an inspiration to what we can do in our short growing season. Hope you have a good growing year! Cheers!
G'day Gail! I hope to visit beautiful Canada one day - she's on my bucket list... All the best for this growing season! Cheers :)
Nina's face is priceless!
Totally worth saving that berry for her.
Mark, you and your family are worth the wait. We appreciate every thing you do, and you are always genuine and authentic. Don't feel bad for taking time off and doing your own thing, after all, we are only human and need breaks to rest and regain perspective. I'm sure everyone will support you on that. Cheers and look forward to seeing all your new projects! Take care of you and your family first. 🤗
Brilliantly said!! 👏🏼 thank you Cindy for putting this into words. I feel the exact same way.
Thank you Mark!! It was so wonderful to see your face again ❤ and see Nina’s!!
Thanks Cindy! Cheers :)
I look forward to seeing the results of the tree on top of an old stump setup! That's so interesting! There are all sorts of pros and cons, but in the end the result is what is most interesting. Thank you for all the inspiring content and glad to see a fresh, green, nitrogen-rich video! :)
Well I think this is mostly pros. You see this in nature as trees grow on nursing trees benefitting from all the slow released nutrients. Water retention should be better and the new tree can use old tree root ways to easily set new roots. It would have been better to let it rot for a while as the bacteria could use nitrogen from the air. Now i would have added more nitrogen to the bed to replace the nitrogen that is going to be fixed by the bacteria.
Quality over quantity! Growing and evolving is part of the process and taking the time to rest and reflect is all part of that process as well. So good to see you again and whenever it works for you, it works for me too.
Welcome back Mark. Self-care first. Thanks for your transparency and vulnerability.❤
You’re such a blessing Mark, I hope you and yours have a massive summer harvest this year
G'day Mark !! So good to see you back buddy. Gee you've been a busy bee planting all those trees. Really enjoyed this video and the little chat at the end. You should never feel as though you don't come off as genuine Mark cause anyone that's been a member of this not so little garden club knows just how genuine and real you are. Love your channel and appreciate all the hard work and extremely helpful knowledge you share with us all. Cheers to you and the entire family and here's a big welcome back thumbs up !! 👍👌
G'day Mike! I love how you call it a "garden club" that's a cool description. Cheers mate and thank you :)
Good to see you back Mark! Glad you’ve given yourself a break, otherwise you’d hit burnout. Looking forward to your lives too! Hubby and I always stick around to the end. Just happy that you are all okay. Love Bel & Brian from Vic xox
Sometimes we all need a break Mark. looking forward to seeing the book and the lives will be awesome when you sort that from the garden. its difficult as my garden is away from home, but I've been working on that too so it be real cool to see you in the yard doing yours
You are hands down the best content on UA-cam. So happy you’ve been taking care of your needs, because you’ve already given us so much and none of us want to see you burn out. I’ve learned so much from this channel and we’re all glad to see you back in action, but please keep taking care of yourself ❤️
P.s. Thanks for this stump idea, you’re a genius and I love this solution so much! So excited to hear you’re working on a book!!
G'day Jennifer, and thank you for your kind comment. I'm not sure about being a "genius", but I think growing on top of the stump will work well, and it saved me from getting a hernia trying to pull it out lol... All the best :)
your content is amazing even in small doses and the fact the you really are genuine make all the difference and makes you the number one gardener+ on the internet. have a great day mark!
Well hello Mark and family, its great to see you again, glad to hear you were just having a break, even though you were busy in the garden. What I find most interesting is that your gardening regime is not static, you are making changes and adjustments as you deem necessary. Must be great to have the whole family on board with you I hope you are good at delegation. cheers from NSW.
Thanks Frances! Honestly, I'm not the best at delegation, but I'm slowly improving... Cheers :)
Great to see you again, Mark! Sounds like you have big things in the works. And giving that first Panama berry to Nina was so sweet! She really enjoyed it. 🥰 Take whatever breaks you need - we'll be here when you return.
Hi Mark, I'm a new viewer and also a first time gardener! Built my first raised bed this year, having tons of fun already! I just wanted to say I love your style of videos, you seem like a wonderful person and the time and effort you put into your channel is obvious. Thanks for sharing your garden, your knowledge and experience, and yourself! Cheers
Thanks Mark, brilliant as always. Your growing conditions are so different from ours but we always learn a ton from your videos.
Thanks Nixon! All the best and I hope you grow a ton this growing season! Cheers :)
We've missed your videos, Mark. Glad to know you've been busy and can show us what you're up to.
Content creators have much busier schedules than most of us realize. Thanks for plugging along and for taking the time you need. Several channels I follow in the US have needed to do the same thing for basically the same reasons.
Hi Mark, my young son and I always look forward to your videos. So great to be able to share my love of plants with him through your channel.
Today I'd also like to thank you for you service.
We appreciate you.
Great to see you back Mark and what you have been working on. Everyone deserves a break and that means you and your family too.
Welcome back Mark! I’m so glad you were able to take some time to recharge. I am so excited about a book from you!! I can’t wait to read it. ❤😅
Greetings from central Pennsylvania US. My wife and bought a bit of a fixer upper and we've been working hard to make a good garden. We look at a lot of local recourses but I found your videos and while we're a half a world away I love your insightful way of sharing general tips and critical garden thinking measures. Our tiny city postage stamp of a yard is light-years from your bountiful landscape but you've given us a boost of confidence to just give it a go and learn as we grow. Thank you, and keep up the good work
Nina looked absolutely delighted over that singular berry. Very cute.
Awesome Info!!
Welcome back Mark!!
My family is from NZ and Tamarillos literally grow as volunteers from the compost. I'm so jealous.
Having a break is so important. Your videos are always super genuine and we've learnt so much from you. It must be great to have Nina and James working with you.
Ahhhhh, A BOOK!! How amazing!! We cannot wait to get a copy :)
Looking forward to the livestreams. See ya soon :)
Hi Mark, wondered if some chicken mesh on top of the pots might sort out the damage by the bush turkeys ?? Hopefully they don't damage themselves figuring it out that they can't scratch!! Glad you're back :)
G'day Dee, yes, chicken mesh would be a good fix and it would work I reckon. Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a go if it keeps happening for sure. Cheers :)
Forget the garden, let’s talk about that shot of Nina eating the berry & the super neat pantry in the background - that pantry looks impressive!
So good to see you are back in the swing of things. It’s always wise to take a good, nice, long, healthy sabbatical; get rid of the cobwebs; recharge your mental, emotional and intellectual batteries; reconnect with yourself. After 10 years, you’ve earned it! You have been an inspiration to literally millions of people, including me in Aberdeen, Washington, USA. I’ve recommended your videos countless times, and will continue to do so; we veterans have to stick together regardless the country. Thanks for your service, both in uniform and in the garden. ❤️
Glad to see you back.
Hi Doug
@Nathan… who’s Doug? Or do you mean ‘dug’! Lol 😂…get it? 🤭
p.s. I can’t find the emoji for a garden spade ♠️… hee hee 😝!
Hi Mark. I live on the NSW Northern Rivers. I just wanted to let you know how much joy your videos have brought me ober the years. I hope you are happy and well and didn't get too unwell before you took that break. Thankyou for everything you do. Look after yourself ❤
I sincerely hope that you don't fall off of youtube because I enjoy your videos so much. If you find yourself too busy then do what you must to be well, you obviously put a lot of time and effort into your educational channel. I just want to let you know you have been an incredible inspiration to me and I can't even believe how much what I have learned from you, and now my vegetables:) has improved the quality of my life, thank you Mark
Great to see you back, I was worried you were burnt out and wouldn’t be back, glad to see you looking fresh after a break. P.S it would be nice if you could do an update on your freeze dryer.
Welcome back mark!
Welcome back! I am so glad that you posted this video because I was just about to pay $600 to have an old tree stump removed to make space for a new fruit tree. I never thought about planting OVER the tree stump - absolutely brilliant! Thank you for sharing (and saving me money)
We all have slumps. Dont ever feel like you have to live up to OUR expectations. Aslong as your family is happy and your being the best you can be the hell with me, us, and everyone else besides you. I appreciate the great content!
Glad to see ya back Mark! Was starting to wonder if the rains had carried you all away! 😅 Love the idea of trees in raised beds. My clay soil is horrible also
Great to see you posting again. Looking forward to what you have coming up.
(EDIT: I've been looking into unusual crops to grow and was wondering if you have heard of "chufa"? it's a grass with tubers that you can grow through your australian winters)
@Pro… can you eat the tubers! Are they native to Oz? 🤗🌾
@@kathrynbillinghurst188 You can eat them, and they apparently taste like a mix of almond and coconut. For each tuber you plant, you get between 10-20 in return because of its fast growth. It isn't native to Oz, but it likes very heavy soils like mark was complaining about in this vid. It's a perfect fit for his area.
@@Handles_AreStupid yep… clay soil!!! 😬
So I’ll try it because we’ve got the home grown ‘bug’ (pun intended…lol) 🤭
We’ve just picked some of our little corn crop… omg…there’s nothing better as far as ANY corn goes! 😋🌽🧈
Mental health is important, taking time to recharge your batteries is important. I watch you because, even though you don't know me and I live a very long way away, in a vastly different climate and growing zone, you give so much encouragement! Thanks for all you do putting these videos together.
I enjoy hearing the magpies crowing behind you as Oz has such a very vocal bird calls. So good to see more videos from you.
Welcome Back!!!
Welcome back Mark! Happy to have you back on board!
Speaking of old/new projects; did you ever get footage of overwintering your milk-bottle-pot chillies? Would love to see the follow up for those guys!
Thank you! Yes, I did overwinter the chillies in milk bottles and about half survived despite me not caring much for them. Because we had so many other chillies growing (and doing well with better flavours), I decided to cancel the project. I might mention this in an upcoming video with the footage I have... not sure, though. Cheers :)
It's your energy and the way you attack the problems you find. So thank you for your videos.
It's good to see you back! Everybody needs a break sometimes. No need to explain or apologize as far as I'm concerned!
Welcome back Mark!! You truly are an inspiration to my very near future project to start a self-sufficient 40 acre property in Southern California high desert region. I’ll be wanting plant the right trees and you have so well informed videos in the hopes I can also be successful. I’m thinking I should do a soil test, but that is something I’ve not done before. I hope that I’ll be able to reach out or you for advice. When I get back home to Australia, I hope that I’ll be able to visit your awesome gardens. At about 13.40 mins in, your words are exactly how I feel. Xoxox
G'day Manu, I would love 40 acres myself! Soil tests can be as simple as a DIY kit or more in-depth with a professional lab test. If you weren't too sure, it wouldn't hurt to know the soil makeup. Thanks and all the best :)
Do you ever feel scared of your mulch around your plants? You have so many poison critters in your country and you're making a pleasant home for them there. PS: I happen to be planting a tree over a stump and you helped me out!
Mulching around the plants and trees doesn't scare me but yes it can create a hiding place for snakes and spiders. Most Aussies with similar gardens instinctively take care when working outdoors just in case we inadvertently disturb and surprise a potentially dangerous critter. Most of the time, the snakes (in particular) are long gone by the time we get there thankfully... I have surprised a few and it's always a heart-skipping moment lol... Cheers :)
Take all the breaks you want! I don't care how often you post! I just care that you post! I thank you, humbly, for all the knowledge you've shared! Truly top notch! You will go down as a youtube legend I know it!
Glad to see you back Mate. Sit and be still, is hard for all of us. But we all need to recharge the batteries or crash. Looking forward to more videos. Kathy said "how sweet you were for giving Nina the first berry."
Sounds like Turkey for dinner soon......
14:12 There is never a need to explain your need to take a break! We’ll be here waiting for another awesome video. I love your stuff and appreciate what you do. So… THANKS!!!💖💖💖
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing you knowledge about gardening .
Also to say that we all need a break mentally, physically and spiritually at some point. You don’t need to worry because you have enough videos for us to watch while you take the time to do whatever you need to do😊❤️
Thank you
Mark…one of the nicest most knowledgeable people on UA-cam!
Mark is so funny. I playfully roll my eyes when he makes his little jokes.
Welcome back, Mark! You were definitely missed. Looking forward to your smiling and hopefully rested face in new videos.
Thank you so much for all you do for this amazing community!! there is no one else like you on this platform and thats why you continue to do it RIGHT! take time for yourself and your projects, we will always be here and we will always keep coming back for this amazing information, community, and entertainment!! Cheers!
We’re building as many raised beds as possible.
Arthritis is beginning to take hold and as we age it’s getting harder to get up off the ground.
Mark, I’ve been missing your videos. Welcome Back !
Mark, ur compassionate energy is what draws ur viewers...do things how u need to do them!🌿🌶️👍
Mark I’ve been waiting almost a month to tell you I think you are truly inspirational! You’re on my top 5 people I want to meet in life one day. Wish all is well!
It's like a movie in cinema, there's always a blooper, teaser or something fun if you're patient and you watch till the very end.
I can't tell you how happy I am to see, and hear you again.
Mark, whatever you are enthusiastic about will make great content in whatever medium you choose.
My family & I love your show Mark. Even when the topic doesn't apply to us, due to climate or acreage, we learn great things & your presentation has the comfort of a conversation with a friend. Welcome back!!
I've been going back and viewing your older videos since you haven't been posting. While they helped, it's great to see you back. Can't wait for more live streams!
I watch you almost everyday now, and now i hear you've been doing this for ten years! That's awesome ill have enough content to keep me going, love how you mentioned wanting to be genuine, that's the reason i watch you!!!
Everyone needs a break now and then. We appreciate what you do.👍🇦🇺
