Wow. Thank you. This video is information jackpot.
The “Deambitioning of Movement”‘section reminded me of a quote from Bruce Lee:
“The consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to the proper execution of all physical action.”
When our brain takes complex reflexive movements and tries to codify them, we slow processing and mess everything up.
Doesn’t matter whether the thought is “how do I make it look even cooler,” or “how exactly do I do this, again?”
    Great stuff, Bren. Thank you!

Many complex ideas in here. Definitely loved the practical philosophy of "The Deambitioning of Movement" section. I also contemplate this, especially during movement meditation. I practice the circle walking method of Baguazhang frequently. One time, after explaining the basic essence of the practice, I had someone laugh at me; "You're just walking in a circle, its the very idea of accomplishing nothing, lol!" I have had many skeptical of the practice until I have them try it, much less try to embody it. We grapple with Wu Wei; at times so as to not be submitted (through the struggle) but sometimes to seek to advance position. An evolving inertia, that carries us through life.

Great work Bren, I can appreciate the amount of effort you put into this, rather than a direct translation of the Huberman Podcast. It is rare to see someone combine science, spirituality and most importantly Movement(s) in a cohesive way, let alone provide demonstrations for each concept.

A quote of mine "The journey is The goal, because If The destination is The goal you will reach The end. But if there is no place to go, but The place you go is The journey itself, then it has no end point, then you are always at your destination while going somewhere but at The same time nowhere"

Great video as always! Although balance is a huge theme in movement, I would still digest it further into 2 main categories of balance:
    1) righting reflexes: when the underground is fixed pbars or floor in a Handstand, rope skipping on floor
    2) tilting reflexes: when the underground is not fixed --> gymnastics rings, skiing, motorcross riding, surfing,...
When you want to improve as a skier it is not so wise to practice in a setup where your righting reflexes are used to produce force.
As a mover (generalist) you want to be able to do all of these.
I find that people who have developed great tilting reflexes are often "good movers". They pick up new stuff super fast, have a strong core and are very stable.
Also for the software skills, I would add Fear, or the capacity to handle it. For example i have a background of mountainbiking where you have to work with your fear on the downhill part on a daily basis, so when I started handbalancing I never really felt fear because what is the worst outcome? Bruise your hip? Whereas when you are a typical couch potato with a few years of fitness center under your belt you might be terrified with the conceot of going upside down on your hands.
What you describe so beautifully at around 27:40 I would define this digestion and owning of a move as style!

I've made the experience that dancing and fighting work best for me in the same state - complete relaxation. I think both have way more in common than most people think. The most relaxed mma students I worked with were usually the best. They move with such flow.... First thing I do when starting eith a new student is train out the rigidity and tension.

Awesome video as always, Bren! I've been more consistent in my practice ever since I pay attention to the current state of my body-mind and accepting it first and foremost, before attempting to change anything (being vs becoming). The practice becomes more exploratory/bottom-up rather than just pure dictation/top-down. I feel better in my body too; I just only realized how much I'm lacking in balance as well as tension modulation (softness vs rigid) in certain tasks because of this. Amazing what a simple shift in perspective can do! Too focused on becoming is like a sculptor who cant even see what their sculpting out of, they cant even see what they have been sculpting, only the image they see in their minds.
Also the digging a hole analogy is interesting. A bit of a tough topic for me but I find that emotional acceptance, is different to being content, giving up or being the donkey blindly carrying things. My attention and action can still be directed towards solving the problem, while I let the emotions change and pass my body--my thoughts too. I think Ido mentioned once, "like a bird passing through the sky". For me its not even about being calm and feeling content at all times, since I don't even know if thats possible. Maybe I can look for the shovel huffing and puffing with anger. Maybe I can look for it while I whistle a favorite song. Maybe it's better for me to rest or eat before looking for the shovel. This way at least I'm more likely to find the shovel or a different tool, and I wouldn't get stuck on some illusory thoughts of frustration.
Anyways, I'd love to get more thoughts on this! Great video Bren!

20.00 minutes: What you're referring to as: " becoming instead of trying" is also called "Flow-State." A prominent example of this is the Flamenco. The main reason that the Flamenco is so difficult is that it requires Flow-State. I have NO idea how Flamenco dancers can reach Flow-State on such a regular basis.
I am fortunate enough to have reached Flow-State three times in my life and can say that it is a FANTASTIC level of awareness.

What a mind blower of a week. Before a week ago I hadn’t heard the name Ido Portal nor had any idea what “movement” meant in this sense.
I’m old and stiff and whilst I ran for fifty years, did t’ai chi for five and have dabbled in other pursuits, the thing that I’ve not done is the physical contact thing. Watching those practices involving one on one stuff fills me with envy at your openness to it but that’s overridden by the “I could never do that” response. Touching is plain creepy to me. I can’t think I’m alone in that. A generational thing I suspect.
Oh, and I’ve never danced a step in my life. Being watched, on display, judged, commented on….all anathema to me.
These videos are nonetheless all consuming.

      Hey Peter,
You're right it's difficult if you do not have a teacher who gradually exposes you.
Maybe try dancing at home alone. Simply, blast some music and feel it, dare to stop thinking.
After that, take some partner dance classes or private dance classes, depending on where you want to go. You can start with something more conventional, i.e. ballroom dancing.
It is an amazing social activity that will make you feel and be younger.
It is difficult to dare think you can change, but please dare to believe!
      Max

Thank you for the video :)
Regarding the hole analogy, I can’t help but think of strength training, since that is “my hole.” To progress strength, the main tools are training stimuli in the form of volume and intensity, as well as recovery factors like sleep and nutrition. It’s kinda frustrating since training stimuli is limited (you can only train so much before it becomes junk volume). I think this is a pretty big weakness in my practice, since it results in the outcome of getting very good at fixed movement patterns, yet not having the ability to express oneself through those movements. At most, I can immerse myself in the laser-like focus required to complete those movements, or I can even vent my negative emotions into the movement. Perhaps that’s why it’s not ideal to consider strength training the “hole,” since there are so few tools that one can use. After all, the process of digging is supposedly the most meaningful aspect of the hole. Thus, having more tools that one can utilize to accomplish a task goal is something to strive for.
Thank you Bren for introducing me to new types of movement (balance, juggling, stillness). It widened my perspective (even if I’m still a strength junkie)

To your question about the shovel: I’ve found through my practice of meditation that the pursuit of living life “better” can interfere with being present in the moment, but the two are certainly not incompatible. If it’s possible to be present in digging with your hands, it’s equally possible to be present while going over to your shed to get a shovel. But perhaps the enlightened person doesn’t care whether they dig by hand or by shovel as long as they experience it fully.

  • @mosherube7904
    @mosherube7904 Рік тому

This was a great expose on a lot of the "whats" of movement. Now a great discussion would be about the "whys" of movement. Why do we move? Why should you devote your time to learn one move more than another?
I think a large part of the answer is social. Movement is one of the tools humans use to build social connections (Cultural tribal dances etc.). If a dance teacher gives me a move to learn, I'll focus on that move more than another. Or if Im in a group that does backflips and handstands, I'd more want to do that. The connection with others is a huge motivation.
The existential philosophy is great but the social part I think trumps that. I'd even put that as a central axis of a movement practice. How to find or make a group that will study and practice the movement or types of movements you want to do and learn.

I was watching you video - an I would be curious to your thoughts on the following. I come from a background of football and kickboxing and in both sports pattern recognition (spotting free space for a pass, anticipating a punch) is very crucial. Where would that fit into your software axes - or would you not consider it part of MOVEMENT?

    • @BrenVez
      @BrenVez  2 місяці тому

Yes, that is an excellent point that I believe I must have only very briefly mentioned in this video. You're talking about the perception of affordances here (opportunities for action in our environment, unique to the individual). This is an enormous part of sport specific skill, which is largely the most important factor in sport performance. This video, and all of these axes, both software and hardware, are about the most important things OUTSIDE of sport specific skill.

I think we can maintain true detachment from the whole while finding ways to move forward to our goals more effectively. Not easy though! This can be accomplished by ensuring we are not reacting to emerging cravings and aversions - ie. developing an incredibly deep sense of self-awareness and, most importantly, cultivating an ongoing state of equanimity. They teach this at Goeka's 10-day Vipassana meditation retreats which are run all over the world for free.

    Hey Bren
Thanks for yet another video full of valuable content. I have two questions I'd like to hear your answer to:
    1) To improve in the hardware axes strength, mobility and endurance, you would use progressive overload to cause adaptation. That's a gradual process. I assume that that's how you can build up your resilience as well. By gradually increasing training volume, intensity or frequency. But I wonder how the axes of resilience is related to your video about the most important thing you learnt from Ido Portal (ua-cam.com/video/m0qeyFJrHWU/v-deo.html). Is it necessary to go through the dark place at some point to reach another level of resilience?
    2) It seems that what is most important to Ido Portal about Movement is becoming a practitioner (ua-cam.com/video/OzZD5bvhoDQ/v-deo.html). Would you say that can be viewed as an aspect of the somatic axis according to your framework? If so: You mention that the somatic axis is arguably the most important one to develop. What's your take on becoming a practitioner? Is that how you want to develop on the somatic level? Or is that something you would prefer not to categorize under one of your axes?
I'm looking forward to your answers.
    All the best!
